Gita Press translation – We were protected from forest fire, storm and rain, the demon Ariṣṭa (who came disguised as a bull) and a python (named Sudarśana) – perils that were (so) difficult to overcome – by Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who is exceedingly magnanimous (20). (Even) as we remember the exploits of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, his sportful sidelong looks, laughter and talk, O dear Uddhava, all our activities get slackened (21).

The नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘हसित’ is derived from the verbal root √हस् (हसेँ हसने १.

By 3-3-114 नपुंसके भावे क्तः – The affix ‘क्त’ may be used following a verbal root to denote in the neuter gender the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state, without restriction to the time frame (past, present or future.)
Note: The affix ‘क्त’ prescribed by this सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to the affix घञ् prescribed by 3-3-18 भावे।
Note: The affix ‘क्त’ prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-2-102 निष्ठा may only be used to denote an action in the past tense. In contrast, the affix ‘क्त’ prescribed by this सूत्रम् 3-3-114 does not have the restriction on tense.
Note: When a word is derived by using the affix ‘क्त’ prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-2-102 निष्ठा, the connecting word takes the third case – e.g. बालकेन हसितम्। In contrast, when a word is derived by using the affix ‘क्त’ prescribed by this सूत्रम् 3-3-114, the connecting word takes the sixth case e.g. बालकस्य हसितम्।

By 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः, a आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: beginning with a letter of the वल्-प्रत्याहारः gets the augment ‘इट्’। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the augment ‘इट्’ at the beginning of the प्रत्यय:।

‘हसित’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

The विवक्षा is द्वितीया-एकवचनम्

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

By 7-1-24 अतोऽम् – The affixes ‘सुँ’ and ‘अम्’ that follow a neuter अङ्गम् ending in the short vowel ‘अ’ take ‘अम्’ as their replacement. 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of ‘अम्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा । Note: 7-1-24 अतोऽम् is required here to prevent 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्‌ from applying.

By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

  1. 1. In Chapter Eleven of the गीता can you spot a प्रातिपदिकम् (used as part of a compound) derived using the verbal root √हस् (हसेँ हसने १.
Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अवहास’ has been used in the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अवहासार्थ’ in the following verse in Chapter Eleven of the गीता –

    ‘अवहास’ is derived from √हस् (हसेँ हसने १. ८२२) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘अव’ as follows:

By 3-3-18 भावे।
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः। ‘अवहास’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    2. Can you recall another (besides 3-3-114) सूत्रम् (which we have studied) from Chapter Three of the अष्टाध्यायी in which पाणिनि: specifically mentions the affix ‘क्त’?
Answer: पाणिनि: specifically mentions the affix ‘क्त’ in the सूत्रम् 3-4-70 तयोरेव कृत्यक्तखलर्थाः – The affixes having the designation ‘कृत्य’, the affix ‘क्त’ and the affixes that have the sense of ‘खल्’ (ref: 3-3-126 ईषद्दुःसुषु कृच्छ्राकृच्छ्रार्थेषु खल्) are only used to denote the action (भावः) or the object (कर्म)।

    3. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-3-114 नपुंसके भावे क्तः been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-114 नपुंसके भावे क्तः has been used in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘निरीक्षित’।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘निरीक्षित’ is derived from the verbal root √ईक्ष् (ईक्षँ दर्शने १. ६९४) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘निर्/निस्’ as follows:
By 3-3-114 नपुंसके भावे क्तः – The affix ‘क्त’ may be used following a verbal root to denote in the neuter gender the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state, without restriction to the time frame (past, present or future.)
By 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः।

    4. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the augment ‘मुँक्’ in the form अभिभूयमानः (used in the commentary)?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-2-82 आने मुक् prescribes the augment ‘मुँक्’ in the form अभिभूयमानः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अभिभूयमान’, पुंल्लिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)। This is a कर्मणि प्रयोगः।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अभिभूयमान’ is derived from the verbal root √भू (भू सत्तायाम् १. १) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘अभि’ as follows –
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-2-126 लक्षणहेत्वोः क्रियायाः। Note: This is a कर्मणि प्रयोगः। Hence as per 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः, a आत्मनेपदम् affix must be used. As per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, ‘शानच्’ has the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। Hence the affix ‘शानच्’ (and not ‘शतृँ’) is used here.
By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
By 7-2-82 आने मुक् – The letter ‘अ’ belonging to a अङ्गम् takes the augment मुँक् when followed by ‘आन’। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ – the augment मुँक् joins after the letter ‘अ’।

    ‘अभिभूयमान’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    5. Can you spot the substitution ‘शतृँ’ (in place of ‘लँट्’) in the verses?
    Answer: The substitution ‘शतृँ’ is used in the form स्मरताम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘स्मरत्’, पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्)।
    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘स्मरत्’ is derived from the verbal root √स्मृ (स्मृ चिन्तायाम् १. १०८२) as follows –
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे – The affix ‘लँट्’ is replaced by ‘शतृँ’/’शानच्’ as long as the derived word is in agreement with (has the same reference as) a word which ends in a nominal ending other than the nominative. Note: Since the verbal root √स्मृ is devoid of any indications for bringing in a आत्मनेपदम् affix, it takes a परस्मैपदम् affix as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्। As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, ‘शतृँ’ has the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा while as per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, ‘शानच्’ has the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। Therefore the verbal root √स्मृ takes the affix ‘शतृँ’ (and not ‘शानच्’) here.
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।

    ‘स्मरत्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Show me your smile.” Use चतुर्थी विभक्ति: with ‘me.’

    Easy questions:

    1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the elision of the letter ‘अ’ in the form स्मः (used in the commentary)?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः prescribes the elision of the letter ‘अ’ in the form स्मः।
    स्मः is derived from the verbal root √अस् (असँ भुवि २. ६०) as follows –

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
    Note: 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘मस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।
By 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः – The letter ‘अ’ of ‘श्न’ (of the affix ‘श्नम्’) and of the verbal root √अस् (असँ भुवि २. ६०) is elided when followed by a सार्वधातुकम् affix which is a कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) or a ङित् (has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्)।
Note: The affix ‘मस्’ is a सार्वधातुकम् affix as per 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्। The सार्वधातुकम् affix ‘मस्’ is not a पित् – it does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्। Therefore by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् (as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्)। This allows 6-4-111 to apply.

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-1-69 एङ्ह्रस्वात्‌ सम्बुद्धेः been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-1-69 एङ्ह्रस्वात्‌ सम्बुद्धेः has been used in the form (हे) उद्धव (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘उद्धव’, सम्बुद्धिः)।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। The affix ‘सुँ’ has the सम्बुद्धि-सञ्ज्ञा here by 2-3-49 एकवचनं संबुद्धिः।
By 6-1-69 एङ्ह्रस्वात्‌ सम्बुद्धेः – Following a अङ्गम् (base) ending in ‘एङ्’ (‘ए’ or ‘ओ’) or a short vowel, a consonant is dropped if it belongs to a सम्बुद्धि: affix.
