Gita Press translation – Leading their children before them and stretching their body on the ground, those chaste wives (of the serpent) presently bowed low to the aforesaid Śrī Kṛṣṇa (the Protector of all created beings) with joined palms and, eager to secure the deliverance of their sinful husband, sought the Lord, who affords protection to all, as their refuge (32). The wives of the serpent prayed: Just is the punishment meted out to this offender; for Your descent (on this earth) is intended for chastising the wicked and You regard Your enemy as well as Your sons with an un-differentiating eye. (Nay,) You inflict punishment (only) because You anticipate good results (from such punishment) (33).

That in which bones etc are accumulated is the body.

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘काय’ is derived from the verbal root √चि (चिञ् चयने ५. ५).

By 3-3-41 निवासचितिशरीरोपसमाधानेष्वादेश्च कः – The affix घञ् may be used following the verbal root √चि (चिञ् चयने ५. ५) and simultaneously the beginning चकार: of the verbal root is replaced by a ककार: when the derived word denotes either निवास: (residence/dwelling), चिति: (funeral/sacrificial fire), शरीरम् (body) or when the verbal root denotes ‘piling up/heaping.’

By 7-2-115 अचो ञ्णिति – A vowel ending अङ्गम् gets a वृद्धिः substitute, when followed by a प्रत्ययः that has ञकारः or a णकारः as an indicatory letter.

By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

‘काय’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

‘काय’ is a masculine/neuter प्रातिपदिकम्।

The विवक्षा is द्वितीया-एकवचनम्

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of ‘अम्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

Questions:

1. Where has कायम् been used in Chapter Eleven of the गीता?

2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-3-41 निवासचितिशरीरोपसमाधानेष्वादेश्च कः (used in step 1) the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – एषु किम्? Please explain.

3. From which verbal root is the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विग्न’ (used as part of the compound सुविग्नमनस:) derived?

4. Where has the गण-सूत्रम् ‘जनीजॄष्क्नसुरञ्जोऽमन्ताश्च’ been used in the commentary?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“All gods reside in the body of a cow.”

Advanced question:

1. Consider the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आश्रयप्रद’ used in the commentary. Can you find the सूत्रम् (which we have not studied so far) that justifies the use of the affix ‘क’ in the derivation of ‘आश्रयप्रद’? Note that 3-2-3 आतोऽनुपसर्गे कः cannot be used here because the उपसर्ग: ‘प्र’ is present. Hint: The अनुवृत्ति: of ‘क’ goes from 3-2-3 आतोऽनुपसर्गे कः down to 3-2-7 समि ख्यः।

Easy questions:

1. From which verbal root is धत्से derived?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः been used in the commentary?

  1. 1. Where has कायम् been used in Chapter Eleven of the गीता?
Answer: कायम् (प्रातिपदिम् ‘काय’, द्वितीया-एकवचम्) has been used in the following verse of the गीता –

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-3-41 निवासचितिशरीरोपसमाधानेष्वादेश्च कः (used in step 1) the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – एषु किम्? Please explain.
Answer: By 3-3-41 निवासचितिशरीरोपसमाधानेष्वादेश्च कः – The affix घञ् may be used following the verbal root √चि (चिञ् चयने ५. ५) and simultaneously the beginning letter ‘च्’ of the verbal root is replaced by the letter ‘क्’ when the derived word denotes either निवास: (residence/dwelling), चिति: (funeral/sacrificial fire), शरीरम् (body) or when the verbal root denotes ‘piling up/heaping.’

The word चय: does not denote either निवास: (residence/dwelling) or चिति: (funeral/sacrificial fire) or शरीरम् (body) and the verbal root √चि (चिञ् चयने ५. ५) does not have the meaning ‘piling up/heaping’ here. चय: means ‘assemblage/collection’ and hence the सूत्रम् 3-3-41 निवासचितिशरीरोपसमाधानेष्वादेश्च कः does not apply. We instead use the affix अच् (prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-3-56 एरच्) to get the form चय:।

    3. From which verbal root is the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विग्न’ (used as part of the compound सुविग्नमनस:) derived?
    Answer: The verbal root √विज् (ओँविजीँ भयचलनयोः ६. ९ or ओँविजीँ भयचलनयोः ७. २३) is used to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विग्न’।

Please see answer to question 1 in the following comment for the derivation of the

    4. Where has the गण-सूत्रम् ‘जनीजॄष्क्नसुरञ्जोऽमन्ताश्च’ been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The गण-सूत्रम् ‘जनीजॄष्क्नसुरञ्जोऽमन्ताश्च’ has been used in the form उपशमयन्त्यः (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘उपशमयन्ती’, प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्)।

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘उपशमयन्ती’ is derived from the causative form of the verbal root √शम् (शमुँ उपशमे ४. ९८) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘उप’ as follows –

By 3-1-26 हेतुमति च।
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।
By 6-4-92 मितां ह्रस्वः। Note: √शम् is a मित् as per the गणसूत्रम् – जनीजॄष्क्नसुरञ्जोऽमन्ताश्च – The verbal roots √जन् (जनीँ प्रादुर्भावे ४. ११५४) as well as any verbal root ending in ‘अम्’ is considered to be ‘मित्’ (having the letter ‘म्’ an an इत्)।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
    ‘शमयत्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

Now the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शमयन्ती’ is derived as follows –
By 4-1-6 उगितश्च। Note: ‘शमयत्’ ends in the affix ‘शतृँ’ which is a उगित् because it has the letter ‘ऋ’ (which belongs to the प्रत्याहार: ‘उक्’) as a इत्। This allows us to apply 4-1-6.
By 7-1-81 शप्श्यनोर्नित्यम्, 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः।
By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि।

After joining the उपसर्गः ‘उप’ we get the final प्रातिपदिकम् ‘उपशमयन्ती’ which declines like नदी-शब्द:।

Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-6 प्रे दाज्ञः justifies the use of the affix ‘क’ in the derivation of ‘आश्रयप्रद’।

    ‘प्रद’ is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √दा (डुदाञ् दाने ३. १०) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘प्र’।

The (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आश्रयप्रद’ is derived as follows:
By 3-2-6 प्रे दाज्ञः – When preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘प्र’ and in composition with a पदम् which denotes the object (of the action), the verbal roots √दा (डुदाञ् दाने ३. ४३) take the affix ‘क’। Note: The affix ‘क’ (prescribed by this सूत्रम्) is an exception to the affix ‘अण्’ prescribed by 3-2-1 कर्मण्यण्।
    Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-2-6 प्रे दाज्ञः, the term कर्मणि (which comes as अनुवृत्ति: from the सूत्रम् 3-2-1 कर्मण्यण्) ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘आश्रय + ङस्’ (which is the object (कर्म-पदम्) of प्रददाति) gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
We form a compound between ‘आश्रय + ङस्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘प्रद’ by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्।

    In the compound, ‘आश्रय + ङस्’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌। Note: Here ‘आश्रय + ङस्’ is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम्।
By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।

    Easy questions:

    1. From which verbal root is धत्से derived?
    Answer: धत्से is derived from the verbal root √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके ३.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-80 थासस्से, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 2-4-75 जुहोत्यादिभ्यः श्लुः।
By 6-1-10 श्लौ ।
By 7-4-59 ह्रस्वः।
By 6-4-112 श्नाभ्यस्तयोरातः। Note: Since the सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: ‘से’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्), by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। This allows 6-4-112 to apply.
By 8-4-54 अभ्यासे चर्च ।
By 8-2-38 दधस्तथोश्च। Note: Normally, as per 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्, the दकारादेश: done by 8-4-54 should not be visible to 8-2-38. But then 8-2-38 would become useless – the conditions required for its application would never occur. So by the fact that पाणिनि: has composed (वचनसामर्थ्यात्) 8-2-38, it has to be given a chance to apply and hence it is allowed to see the operation done by 8-4-54.
By 8-4-55 खरि च।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः has been used in the form स्तुवन्ति derived from the verbal root √स्तु (ष्टुञ् स्तुतौ, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२. ३८).

Please see answer to question 4 in the following comment for derivation of the form
