  1. 1. In the five verses 30-34 of Chapter Eleven of the गीता can you spot a word in which the सूत्रम् 3-3-117 करणाधिकरणयोश्च has been used?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-117 करणाधिकरणयोश्च has been used in the word वदनैः (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वदन’, तृतीया-बहुवचनम्)।

    The नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वदन’ is derived from the verbal root √वद् (वदँ व्यक्तायां वाचि १. ११६४) as follows –
By 3-3-117 करणाधिकरणयोश्च – The affix ल्युट् may be used following a verbal root to denote the instrument or the locus of the action.
By 7-1-1 युवोरनाकौ, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-3-117 करणाधिकरणयोश्च the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – खल: प्राक्करणाधिकरणयोरित्यधिकार:। Please explain.
    Answer: The अधिकारः of करणाधिकरणयो: runs from the सूत्रम् 3-3-117 करणाधिकरणयोश्च all the way down to 3-3-125 खनो घ च (which come prior to 3-3-126 ईषद्दुःसुषु कृच्छ्राकृच्छ्रार्थेषु खल्।)

    3. Where else (besides in वाहनैः) has the affix ल्युट् been used in the verses?
Answer: The affix ‘ल्युट्’ has also been used in the form उपासने (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘उपासन’, सप्तमी-एकवचनम्)।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘उपासन’ is derived from the verbal root √आस् (आसँ उपवेशने २. ११) with the उपसर्ग: ‘उप’ as follows –
By 3-3-115 ल्युट् च – (In addition to the affix ‘क्त’ prescribed by the prior सूत्रम् 3-3-114) the affix ल्युट् may also be used following a verbal root to denote in the neuter gender the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state.
By 7-1-1 युवोरनाकौ, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
‘ उपासन’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    4. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix ‘णिनिँ’ in the word शीघ्रगामिभिः?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-78 सुप्यजातौ णिनिस्ताच्छील्ये prescribes the affix ‘णिनिँ’ in the form शीघ्रगामिभिः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शीघ्रगामिन्’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे तृतीया-बहुववनम्)।

    ‘गामिन्’ is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १.

The (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् ‘ शीघ्रगामिन्’ is derived as follows:

    शीघ्र + अम् + गम् + णिनिँ । By 3-2-78 सुप्यजातौ णिनिस्ताच्छील्ये – When in composition with a सुबन्तं पदम् (a पदम् which ends in a सुँप् affix) which does not denote a class/genus, a verbal root may take the affix ‘णिनिँ’ to express the meaning of a habitual/natural action.
    Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-2-78, the term सुपि ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘ शीघ्र + अम्’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।

    We form a compound between ‘शीघ्र + अम्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘गामिन्’ by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्। In the compound, ‘शीघ्र + अम्’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌।
    ‘ शीघ्र + अम् + गामिन्’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    = शीघ्रगामिन् । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of the affix ‘भिस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
Here the अङ्गम् ‘शीघ्रगामिन्’ gets the designation पदम् by 1-4-17 स्वादिष्वसर्वनामस्थाने। This allows 8-2-7 to apply in the next step.
By 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य।

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे has been used in the form अस्यताम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अस्यत्’, पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्) derived from √अस् (असुँ क्षेपणे ४.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे – The affix ‘लँट्’ is replaced by ‘शतृँ’/’शानच्’ as long as the derived word is in agreement with (has the same reference as) a word which ends in a nominal ending other than the nominative. Note: Since the verbal root √अस् is devoid of any indications for bringing in a आत्मनेपदम् affix, it takes a परस्मैपदम् affix as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्। As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, ‘शतृँ’ has the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा while as per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, ‘शानच्’ has the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। Therefore the verbal root √अस् takes the affix ‘शतृँ’ (and not ‘शानच्’) here.
By 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन्।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।

    ‘अस्यत्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Even though it has no vehicle, the mind goes far.” Paraphrase to “The mind goes far even though its vehicle does not exist.”
