Gita Press translation – Yet, in order to purify my own speech which has been rendered foul by other (profane) talk, I proceed to sing, dear Vidura, the glory of Śrī Hari according to my own (poor) lights and on the basis of what I have heard (from my preceptor) (36). The wise declare that the sole utility of men’s speech decidedly lies in uttering the praised of the Lord, who is the foremost of those enjoying the highest renown, and that the sole utility of one’s ears lies in their coming into touch with the nectar-like discourses on Śrī Hari, delivered by learned men (37).

कीर्त्यत इति कीर्त्ति:/कीर्ति: derived from the verbal root √कॄत् (कॄतँ संशब्दने १०. १५५).

The ending अकार: of “कॄतँ” is an इत् as per 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(1) कॄत् + णिच् । By 3-1-25 सत्यापपाशरूपवीणातूलश्लोकसेनालोमत्वचवर्मवर्णचूर्णचुरादिभ्यो णिच् – The affix णिच् is used after these words – “सत्य” ‘truth’ (which then takes the form of “सत्याप्” as exhibited in the सूत्रम्), “पाश” ‘fetter’, “रूप” ‘form’, “वीणा” ‘lute’, “तूल” ‘cotton’, “श्लोक” ‘celebration’, “सेना” ‘army’, “लोमन्” ‘hair of the body’, “त्वच” ‘skin’, “वर्मन्” ‘mail’, “वर्ण” ‘color’, “चूर्ण” ‘powder’ and the verbal roots belonging to the चुरादि-गणः। “णिच्” gets आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः

(2) कॄत् + इ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) किर् त् + इ । By 7-1-101 उपधायाश्च, a ॠकार:, when it is the penultimate (उपधा) letter of a धातु:, takes the इकारादेश:। As per 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः, the रेफ: is added to the इकार:।

(4) कीर्ति । By 8-2-78 उपधायां च, a इक् letter is elongated if it is followed by a रेफ: or वकार:, provided the रेफ: or वकार: is the penultimate letter (उपधा) of a verbal root and is followed by a consonant. “कीर्ति” gets धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः

(5) कीर्ति + क्तिन् । By 3-3-97 ऊतियूतिजूतिसातिहेतिकीर्तयश्च – ‘ऊति’, ‘यूति’, ‘जूति’, ‘साति’, ‘हेति’ and ‘कीर्ति’ are given as six ready-made feminine forms ending in the affix क्तिन् having a उदात्त: accent. Note: The affix युच् would have come here by 3-3-107 ण्यासश्रन्थो युच्। Instead we use the affix क्तिन् in order to get the form ‘कीर्त्ति’/’कीर्ति’ as given in 3-3-97.

(6) कीर्ति + ति । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: The affix क्तिन् is prohibited from taking the augment इट् by 7-2-9 तितुत्रतथसिसुसरकसेषु च।

(7) कीर्त् + ति । By 6-4-51 णेरनिटि – The ‘णि’-प्रत्यय: is elided when followed by an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: which does not have the augment इट्।

(8) कीर्त्ति/कीर्ति । By 8-4-65 झरो झरि सवर्णे। ‘कीर्त्ति’/’कीर्ति’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

The विवक्षा is द्वितीया-एकवचनम्

(9) कीर्ति + अम् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of ‘अम्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

(10) कीर्तिम् । By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.
