Gita Press translation – Nārada resumed : Hiraṇyakaśipu, O king (Yudhiṣṭhira,) (now) wished to make himself invincible, free from old age and death and the sole monarch of the three worlds, having no rival (1). In the valley of Mount Mandara he practiced asceticism of the severest type, keeping (both) his arms lifted up and his gaze fixed on the sky, and touching the ground with his great toes (2).

The “डु” at the beginning of this धातुः gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-5 आदिर्ञिटुडवः। The ञकारः at the end gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्। Both take लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

As per 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा – In order to express wish/desire, the affix सन् is optionally prescribed after a verbal root which underlies the object of and shares the same agent with the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६.

By 7-4-54 सनि मीमाघुरभलभशकपतपदामच इस् – “इस्” is substituted for the root-vowel of the following verbal roots when followed by the affix सन् beginning with a सकारः (i.e. no augment “इट्”) –
४ – elongated to “मी” by 6-4-16), ii) √मा (मा माने २. १११६ – becomes “मा” by 6-1-45), iii) any verbal root having घु-सञ्ज्ञा (ref: 1-1-20 दाधा घ्वदाप्), iv) √रभ् (रभँ राभस्ये १.
११) has the घु-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-20 दाधा घ्वदाप्

By 7-4-49 सः स्यार्धधातुके – A सकार: gets replaced by a तकार: when followed by a आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: which begins with a सकार:।

By 6-1-9 सन्यङोः – There is reduplication of the first portion – containing a single vowel – of a verbal root ending in the affix सन्/यङ् which is not already reduplicated. But if the verbal root (that has more than one vowel) begins with a vowel, then the reduplication is of the second portion – containing a single vowel.

By 7-4-58 अत्र लोपोऽभ्यासस्य – The reduplicate (अभ्यासः) is elided under the circumstances mentioned in the foregoing सूत्राणि 7-4-54 सनि मीमाघुरभलभशकपतपदामच इस् to 7-4-57 मुचोऽकर्मकस्य गुणो वा।

In the धातु-पाठः, √धा has ञकारः as a इत् letter. Hence by 1-3-72 स्वरितञितः कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले, √धा takes आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः when the fruit of the action (क्रियाफलम्) accrues to the doer (कर्त्रभिप्रायम् = कर्तृ-अभिप्रायम्)। In the remaining case – when the fruit of the action does not accrue to the doer – by 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्√धा takes परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययाः। In short, √धा is उभयपदी।
Hence the सन्नन्त-धातुः “धित्स” is also उभयपदी as per 1-3-62 पूर्ववत् सनः – A सन्नन्त-धातुः (verbal root ending in the affix “सन्”) takes a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यय: in the same manner as the verbal root to which the affix सन् is added.
Note: This implies that if the धातु: to which the affix सन् is added is आत्मनेपदी/परस्मैपदी/उभयपदी then the सन्नन्त-धातुः is correspondingly आत्मनेपदी/परस्मैपदी/उभयपदी।  In this verse, “धित्स” has taken a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यय:।

By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ्, the affix लँङ् follows a धातुः when used in the sense of past not of today.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates “त” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent.

By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे

By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the अट्-आगमः which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “अट्”-आगमः before the अङ्गम् ।

अनुबन्ध-लोपः is done by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

“वि” is the उपसर्गः (ref.
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

  1. 1. Commenting on 7-4-58 अत्र लोपोऽभ्यासस्य (used in step 6) the काशिका says अभ्यासस्येत्येतच्चाधिकृतं वेदितव्यमाध्यायपरिसमाप्तेः। Please explain.
Answer: It is to be understood that the अधिकारः of “अभ्यासस्य” runs from here (7-4-58 अत्र लोपोऽभ्यासस्य) up to the end of सप्तमोऽध्यायः of the अष्टाध्यायी। (i.e. up to 7-4-97 ई च गणः।) This is what is explained by अभ्यासस्येत्येतच्चाधिकृतं वेदितव्यमाध्यायपरिसमाप्तेः।

    2. Commenting on 7-4-49 सः स्यार्धधातुके (used in step 4) the तत्त्वबोधिनी says ‘आर्धधातुके’ इति किम्। Please explain.
    Answer: The form वस्से is derived from √वस् (वसँ आच्छादने २.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-80 थासस्से। “से” also gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।
    Note: As per 7-4-49 सः स्यार्द्धधातुके – A सकार: gets replaced by a तकार: when followed by a आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: which begins with a सकार:। In the form वस्से the अङ्गम् “वस्” is followed by the प्रत्यय: “से” which begins with a सकार: but “से” does not have आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा। Therefore 7-4-49 does NOT apply here.

    3. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि been used in the verses?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि has been used in the verses in the form तेपे derived from √तप् (तपँ सन्तापे १.

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्। As per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, a परस्मैपदम् affix should have been used here. Instead a आत्मनेपदम् affix has been used irregularly.
By 3-4-81 लिटस्तझयोरेशिरेच्, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि, the अकार: of a अङ्गम् takes एकार: as the substitute and simultaneously there is लोप: (elision) of the अभ्यास:, when all the following conditions are satisfied:
    (i) the अकार: is preceded and followed by a single (non-conjunct) consonant
(ii) the अङ्गम् is followed by a लिँट् affix which is कित्
(iii) in place of the first letter of the अङ्गम् there is no आदेश: (substitution) that is based on the लिँट् affix.

Note : By 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्, a लिँट् affix which is not a पित् – does not have पकार: as a इत् – is considered to be a कित् (as having ककार: as a इत्), as long as there is no संयोग: (conjunction consonant) prior to the affix. Hence “एश्” is a कित्-प्रत्यय: here. This allows 6-4-120 to apply.

    4. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I want to make you a scholar.”

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I want to give you this book.” Use चतुर्थी-विभक्तिः with “you.”

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The teacher wanted to see you yesterday.”

    Easy Questions:
    1. In the verses can you spot where a रेफः has taken लोपः?
    Answer: A रेफः has taken लोपः in the verse in the सन्धि-कार्यम् between हिरण्यकशिपुः + राजन् = हिरण्यकशिपू राजन्।
By 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः।
By 8-3-14 रो रि – The letter “र्” (referred to as रेफ:) is dropped when followed by the letter “र्”।
By 6-3-111 ढ्रलोपे पूर्वस्य दीर्घोऽणः – When the letter “ढ्” or “र्” is dropped then the prior अण् letter is elongated.

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-3-32 ङमो ह्रस्वादचि ङमुण्नित्यम् been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-3-32 ङमो ह्रस्वादचि ङमुण्नित्यम् has been used in the सन्धि-कार्यम् between राजन् + अजेयम् = राजन्नजेयम्।

As per 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम्, “राजन्” has the पद-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 8-3-32 ङमो ह्रस्वादचि ङमुण् नित्यम् – When there is a ङम् letter (in this case नकार:) at the end of a पदम् and this ङम् letter is preceded by a short vowel (in this case अकार:), then the following vowel (long or short – in this case the अकार: at the beginning of अजेयम्) always gets the augment ङमुँट् (in this case नुँट्)। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the augment नुँट् joins at the beginning of the अकार:।
