लिप्सवः mNp

Today we will look at the form लिप्सवः mNp from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 8.16.12.

Translation – The sacred fires, guests, servants, mendicants and others who expect anything (from us) have (all) been (properly) fed by me. (In fact,) nothing is (found) lacking by virtue of my incessant thought of your worshipful self, O holy Brāhmaṇa! (12) Indeed what desire of my mind, O holy one, would not be fulfilled, to whom you, O lord of created beings, teach my duties in this way? (13)

The सन्नन्त-धातुः “लिप्स” is derived from √लभ् (डुलभँष् प्राप्तौ, भ्वादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #१.

As per 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा – In order to express wish/desire, the affix सन् is optionally prescribed after a verbal root which underlies the object of and shares the same agent with the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६.

By 7-4-54 सनि मीमाघुरभलभशकपतपदामच इस् – “इस्” is substituted for the root-vowel of the following verbal roots when followed by the affix सन् beginning with a सकारः (i.e. no augment “इट्”) –
४ – elongated to “मी” by 6-4-16), ii) √मा (मा माने २. १११६ – becomes “मा” by 6-1-45), iii) any verbal root having घु-सञ्ज्ञा (ref: 1-1-20), iv) √रभ् (रभँ राभस्ये १.

By 6-1-9 सन्यङोः – There is reduplication of the first portion – containing a single vowel – of a verbal root ending in the affix सन्/यङ् which is not already reduplicated. But if the verbal root (that has more than one vowel) begins with a vowel, then the reduplication is of the second portion – containing a single vowel.

By 7-4-58 अत्र लोपोऽभ्यासस्य – The reduplicate (अभ्यासः) is elided under the circumstances mentioned in the foregoing सूत्राणि 7-4-54 सनि मीमाघुरभलभशकपतपदामच इस् to 7-4-57 मुचोऽकर्मकस्य गुणो वा।

By 8-2-29 स्कोः संयोगाद्योरन्ते च – The सकारः or ककारः at the beginning of a conjunct takes लोपः when the conjunct is at the end of a पदम् or followed by a झल् letter.

By 8-4-55 खरि च – A झल् letter is replaced by a चर् letter when a खर् letter follows.

Now we derive the प्रातिपदिकम् “लिप्सु” from the सन्नन्त-धातुः “लिप्स”।

By 3-2-168 सनाशंसभिक्ष उः – The affix “उ” is prescribed after the following verbal roots to denote an agent who performs an action because of his nature/habit or sense of duty or skill:
i) any verbal root ending in the affix सन्
७१६) preceded by the उपसर्गः “आङ्”

By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः – When an आर्धधातुकम् affix follows, the अकारः at the end of a अङ्गम् is elided if the अङ्गम् ends in a अकार: at the time when the आर्धधातुकम् affix is prescribed.

Since the affix “उ” has the कृत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्, “लिप्सु” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। “लिप्सु” is an adjective which declines like “गुरु” in the masculine, “धेनु” in the feminine and “मधु” in the neuter.

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकारः of “जस्” from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

7-3-109 जसि च – When the affix “जस्” follows, there is a गुण: substitute for the (ending letter of) of an अङ्गम् ending in a short vowel.

By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः ।
