नश्वरम् nAs

Today we will look at the form नश्वरम् nAs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 11.7.7.

Gita Press translation – Completely shaking off all attachment for your own people and kinsmen and fully concentrating your mind on Me, for your part, go you about the earth looking upon all with an equal eye (6). Whatever is being apprehended with the mind, speech, eyes, ears etc., know it to be a creation of the mind and therefore (merely) illusory and transient (7).

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘नश्वर’ is derived from the verbal root √नश् (णशँ अदर्शने ४. The beginning णकार: of this verbal root is replaced by a नकार: as per 6-1-65 णो नः। The ending अकार: gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

By 3-2-163 इण्नश्जिसर्तिभ्यः क्वरप्‌ – To denote an agent who performs an action because of his nature/habit or sense of duty or skill, the affix ‘क्वरप्‌’ may be used following any one of the verbal roots listed below –
(i) √इ (इण् गतौ २.

Note: The affix ‘वर’ is prohibited from taking the augment ‘इट्’ by 7-2-8 नेड् वशि कृति – A कृत् affix (ref. 3-1-93) beginning with a letter of the ‘वश्’ प्रत्याहार: is prohibited from taking the augment ‘इट्’।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

By 7-1-24 अतोऽम् – The affixes “सुँ” and “अम्” that follow a neuter अङ्गम् ending in the short vowel “अ” take “अम्” as their replacement. 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of “अम्” from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा । Note: 7-1-24 अतोऽम् is required here to prevent 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्‌ from applying.

By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix “अम्” there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

  1. 1. Where has the verbal root √नश् (णशँ अदर्शने ४. ९१) been used for the last time in the गीता?
Answer: The verbal root √नश् (णशँ अदर्शने ४. ९१) has been used for the last time in the गीता in the following verse:

The derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘नष्ट’ is shown in the following post – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/12/03/नष्टाः-mnp/

    2. What would be the feminine equivalent of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘नश्वर’?
Answer: The feminine equivalent of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘नश्वर’ is ‘नश्वरी’।

By 4-1-15 टिड्ढाणञ्द्वयसज्दघ्नञ्मात्रच्तयप्ठक्ठञ्कञ्क्वरपः – To denote the feminine gender, the affix ङीप् is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् which satisfies the following conditions:
    (i) the प्रातिपदिकम् ends in the letter ‘अ’
    (ii) the प्रातिपदिकम् ends in a non-secondary affix which is either टित् (has the letter ‘ट्’ as a इत्) or is one of the following – ‘ढ’, ‘अण्’, ‘अञ्’, ‘द्वयसच्’, ‘दघ्नच्’, ‘मात्रच्’, ‘तयप्’, ‘ठक्’, ‘ठञ्’, ‘कञ्’ or ‘क्वरप्’
‘नश्वर’ gets the भ-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-4-18 यचि भम्। This allows 6-4-148 to apply in the next step.
By 6-4-148 यस्येति च, 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य।

    3. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 7-2-8 नेड् वशि कृति (used in step 2) the काशिका says – कृतीति किम्? Please explain.
    Answer: रुदिव: is derived from the verbal root √रुद् (रुदिँर् अश्रुविमोचने २.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘वस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा। ‘वस्’ has the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः। Note: Since the affix ‘वस्’ is a सार्वधातुकम् affix which is अपित्, it becomes ङित्-वत् (as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as an इत्) by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्। This enables 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to prevent the गुणादेश: for the penultimate letter ‘उ’ of the अङ्गम् ‘रुद्’ which would have been done by 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
By 7-2-76 रुदादिभ्यः सार्वधातुके – A सार्वधातुकम् affix beginning with a letter of the वल्-प्रत्याहारः gets the augment इट् when following the verbal root √रुद् (रुदिँर् अश्रुविमोचने २. As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ the augment इट् joins at the begin of the affix ‘वस्’।
Note: The affix ‘वस्’ does begin with a letter (‘व्’) of the वश्-प्रत्याहारः। But since ‘वस्’ is a तिङ् affix it is not a कृत् affix (ref. Hence 7-2-8 नेड् वशि कृति cannot prohibit the augment इट् in this case. This is what the काशिका means by कृतीति किम्?

    4. Can you spot a आर्ष-प्रयोग: (irregular grammatical usage) in the verses?
    Answer: विचरस्व is a आर्ष-प्रयोग:।

The form विचरस्व is derived from the verbal root √चर् (चरँ गत्यर्थ: १. ६४०) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘वि’। In the active voice, the verbal root √चर् should take only a परस्मैपदम् affix as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम् – When used in the active voice, a verbal root takes a परस्मैपदम् affix provided it does not satisfy any of the conditions (listed in the rules from 1-3-12 to 1-3-77) required for taking a आत्मनेपदम् affix.

In the form विचरस्व a आत्मनेपदम् affix has been irregularly used. The grammatically correct form is विचर।

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-82 आने मुक् been used in the verses?
Answer: The augment ‘मुँक्’ has been used in the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गृह्यमाण’ in the form गृह्यमाणम् (नपुंसकलिङ्गे, प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

    ‘गृह्यमाण’ is a passive form (कर्मणि प्रयोग:) derived from the verbal root √ग्रह् (ग्रहँ उपादाने ९. ७१).
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
By 6-1-108 सम्प्रसारणाच्च।
By 7-2-82 आने मुक् – The letter ‘अ’ belonging to a अङ्गम् takes the augment मुँक् when followed by ‘आन’। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ – the augment ‘मुँक्’ joins after the letter ‘अ’।
By 8-4-2 अट्कुप्वाङ्नुम्व्यवायेऽपि with the help of the वार्त्तिकम् (under 8-4-1) – ऋवर्णान्नस्य णत्वं वाच्यम्।

    ‘गृह्यमाण’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“All that is seen is perishable.”

    Easy questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-1-93 औतोऽम्शसोः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-1-93 औतोऽम्शसोः has been used in the form गाम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गो’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा……….।
By 6-1-93 औतोऽम्शसोः, the letter ‘आ’ is the single substitute in the place of the letter ‘ओ’ and the following vowel (the letter ‘अ’) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ or ‘शस्’

    2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the अकार-लोप: (elision of ‘अ’) in the form स्याम् used in the commentary?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः is used for the elision of the letter ‘अ’ in the form स्याम् derived from the verbal root √अस् (असँ भुवि २.

By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ्।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of ‘अम्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
The letter ‘उ’ in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थः)। The letter ‘ट्’ is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
By 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्त्यस्य।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।
By 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः – The letter ‘अ’ of ‘श्न’ (of the affix ‘श्नम्’) and of the verbal root √अस् (असँ भुवि २. ६०) is elided when followed by a सार्वधातुकम् affix which is a कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) or a ङित् (has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्)।
    Note: The affix ‘याम्’ is a सार्वधातुकम् affix as per 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्। It is a ङित् due to यासुट् being a ङित् by 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च। This allows 6-4-111 to apply.
