Today we will look at the form दीव्यन्ति 3Ap-लँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb10-61-35.

Gita Press translation “Being keepers of cows roaming in woods, you do not know the game of dice. Kings (alone) play at dice and sport with arrows, not men like you.”

दीव्यन्ति is derived from the धातुः √दिव् (दिवादि-गणः, दिवुँ क्रीडाविजिगीषाव्यवहारद्युतिस्तुतिमोदमदस्वप्नकान्तिगतिषु, धातु-पाठः #४. १)

In the धातु-पाठः, the ending उकारः of “दिवुँ” is an इत् by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्। After 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः only “दिव्” remains. This धातु: is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the √दिव्-धातुः, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, will take the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √दिव्-धातुः can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “झि”।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “झि” as the substitute for the लकारः। “झि” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम् – The affixes of the तिङ्-प्रत्याहारः and the affixes that have शकारः as an इत् get the designation of सार्वधातुकम् if they are prescribed in the “धातो:” अधिकार:।

By 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन् , the श्यन्-प्रत्यय: is placed after the verbal roots belonging to the दिवादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ । See question 2.

By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः -“अन्त्” comes in as a replacement for the झकारः of a प्रत्यय:।

By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे, in the place of an अकार: which is not at the end of a पदम्, and the following गुण: letter, there is single substitute of the latter (the गुण: letter.)

By 8-2-77 हलि च , the penultimate (उपधा) इक् letter of a verbal root ending in a वकारः or रेफः is made दीर्घः, when followed by a हल् (consonant).

Questions:

1. Where has 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन् been used in the last five verses of Chapter Four of the गीता?

2. As stated in step 5, 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन् is a अपवाद: (exception) to 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ । Can you recall another सूत्रम् (which we have studied) which is also a अपवाद: to 3-1-68?

3. Can you recall a निषेध-सूत्रम् (prohibition) to 8-2-77 हलि च (used in step 10 of this example)? Why didn’t that निषेध-सूत्रम् apply here?

4. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन्, the काशिका says शकारः सार्वधातुकार्थः। Please explain.

5. The वृत्ति: for the सूत्रम् 8-2-77 हलि च says – रेफवान्‍तस्‍य धातोरुपधाया इको दीर्घो हलि । Commenting on this the Please explain.

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“One should not play at (with) dice.” Use a word from the verse for “with dice.”

Easy questions:

1. Which सूत्रम् was used to do उपधा-दीर्घ: (elongation of the penultimate letter) of the प्रातिपदिकम् “राजन्” in the form राजान: (प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्)?

2. Where has 8-4-40 स्तोः श्चुना श्चुः been used in the verse?

  1. Questions:

    1. Where has 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन् been used in the last five verses of Chapter Four of the गीता?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन् is been used in the forms विद्यते – derived from the verbal root √विद् (विदँ सत्तायाम् ४. ६७) and विनश्यति – derived from the verbal root √नश् (णशँ अदर्शने ४.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन् – The affix ‘श्यन्’ is placed after the verbal roots belonging to the दिवादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुकम् affix that is used signifying the agent. Note: By 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्, the affix ‘श्यन्’ becomes ङिद्वत् (behaves like having the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्)। Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents the गुणादेशः for the letter ‘इ’ (of the अङ्गम् ’विद्’) which would have been done by 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।

    The beginning णकार: of “णशँ” gets replaced by a नकार: by 6-1-65 णो नः।
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन्
    “वि” is the उपसर्ग: (ref.

    2. As stated in step 5, 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन् is a अपवाद: (exception) to 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप् । Can you recall another सूत्रम् (which we have studied) which is also a अपवाद: to 3-1-68?
    Answer: 3-1-74 श्रुवः शृ च as well as 3-1-79 तनादिकृञ्भ्यः उः is a अपवाद: to 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
    By the सूत्रम् 3-1-74 श्रुवः शृ च, the श्नु-प्रत्ययः is placed after the verbal root √श्रु (श्रु श्रवणे १. १०९२), when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. Simultaneously, “श्रु” takes the substitution “शृ”।
By the सूत्रम् 3-1-79 तनादिकृञ्भ्यः उः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः signifying the agent follows, the affix “उ” is placed after the verbal root √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८. १०) and also after a verbal root belonging to the तनादि-गणः।

    3. Can you recall a निषेध-सूत्रम् (prohibition) to 8-2-77 हलि च (used in step 10 of this example)? Why didn’t that निषेध-सूत्रम् apply here?
    Answer: 8-2-79 न भकुर्छुराम् is a निषेध-सूत्रम् to 8-2-77 हलि च । By the सूत्रम् 8-2-79 न भकुर्छुराम्, the दीर्घादेश: (prescribed by 8-2-77 हलि च) for the penultimate (उपधा) इक् letter of an अङ्गम् does not take place in the following three cases:
    i. The अङ्गम् has the भ-सञ्ज्ञा or
ii. The अङ्गम् is “कुर्” or
    iii. The अङ्गम् is “छुर्”।
None of the three cases apply in this example so the निषेध-सूत्रम् 8-2-79 न भकुर्छुराम् did not apply.

    4. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन्, the काशिका says शकारः सार्वधातुकार्थः। Please explain.
Answer: “शकारः सार्वधातुकार्थः” means that the शकारः is used as an इत् so that the श्यन्-प्रत्ययः may get the designation of सार्वधातुकम् by the सूत्रम् 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्।

    5. The वृत्ति: for the सूत्रम् 8-2-77 हलि च says – रेफवान्तस्य धातोरुपधाया इको दीर्घो हलि । Commenting on this the Please explain.
Answer: “धातोः किम्?” means why has the word धातोः been used in the वृत्ति: of the सूत्रम् 8-2-77? The answer is “रेफान्तस्य पदस्य मा भूत्।” which means that the reason for using धातोः is to prevent 8-2-77 from applying in the case of a पदम् ending in a रेफ:।
This is explained by the following example – अग्निः करोति। The सन्धि-कार्यम् between अग्निः, करोति is as follows:
    (1) अग्निस् + करोति।
    (2) अग्निर् + करोति (8-2-66 ससजुषो रुँ:, 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः)। At this stage, there is a रेफ: followed by a हल् letter (ककार:) and preceded by a इक् letter (इकार:)। But still the सूत्रम् 8-2-77 does not apply because “अग्निर्” is not a धातु:। It is a पदम् as per 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम्।

Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने च असम्बुद्धौ was used to do उपधा-दीर्घ: (elongation of the penultimate letter) of the प्रातिपदिकम् “राजन्” in the form राजान:।
। “जस्” gets सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य।
    = राजन् + अस् । 1-3-7 चुटू । 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने च असम्बुद्धौ, the penultimate letter of the अङ्गम् (base) ending in a नकार: gets elongated if it is followed by a non-vocative affix having the designation सर्वनामस्थानम्।

    2. Where has 8-4-40 स्तोः श्चुना श्चुः been used in the verse?
    Answer: 8-4-40 स्तोः श्चुना श्चुः has been used in the सन्धि-कार्यम् between बाणै:, च।
    = बाणैश् च (8-4-40 स्तोः श्चुना श्चुः, when the letter स् or a letter of the त-वर्ग: (त्, थ्, द्, ध्, न्) comes in contact with either the letter श् or a letter of the च-वर्ग: (च्, छ्, ज्, झ्, ञ्), then it is replaced respectively by श्, च-वर्ग: (च्, छ्, ज्, झ्, ञ्)।
