Gita Press translation – Even as those devoted to rituals seek to cross the ocean of mundane existence by recourse to sacrificial performances consisting of rituals passing for boats in name alone and (wholly) undependable, giving up the signs of self-realization, so having taken shelter under Kṛṣṇa – a garrulous, foolish, arrogant and ignorant mortal, though thinking himself to be a great scholar – the cowherds have given offense to me (4-5).

हित्वा is derived from the verbal root √हा (ओँहाक् त्यागे ३. ९) .

By 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले – The affix ‘क्त्वा’ is used following a verbal root which denotes a prior action relative to that of another verbal root, provided the agent of both the actions is the same.
Note: Here the common agent of both the actions हित्वा (giving up) and तितीर्षन्ति (seek to cross) is ‘those devoted to rituals’. The earlier of the two actions is the action of giving up which is denoted by √हा and hence √हा takes the affix ‘क्त्वा’।
Note: अव्ययकृतो भावे (from महाभाष्यम्) – कृत् affixes (such as ‘क्त्वा’) having the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा are used to denote भाव: (action) – and not the agent (ref. 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌) of the action.

Note: Here 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prohibits the affix ‘त्वा’ from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः

By 7-4-43 जहातेश्च क्त्वि – When followed by the affix ‘क्त्वा’ the verbal root √हा (ओँहाक् त्यागे ३. ९) takes the substitution ‘हि’। The entire term ‘हा’ is replaced by ‘हि’ as per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य

1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।

‘हित्वा’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds get the name प्रातिपदिकम्।
‘हित्वा’ also gets the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः – Words ending in the affixes ‘क्त्वा’, ‘तोसुन्’ and ‘कसुन्’ are designated as indeclinables.

(4) हित्वा + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः – The feminine affix आप् and सुँप् affixes that are prescribed after a अव्ययम् take the लुक् elision.

  1. 1. Where has हित्वा been used in Chapter Two of the गीता? Identify the common doer and the later action done by the common doer.
Answer: हित्वा has been used in the following verse:
    अथ चेत्त्वमिमं धर्म्यं संग्रामं न करिष्यसि ।
    ततः स्वधर्मं कीर्तिं च हित्वा पापमवाप्स्यसि ।। 2-33 ।।

Here the common agent of both the actions (renouncing and obtaining) is त्वम् (अर्जुनः)। The earlier of the two actions is the action of renouncing which is denoted by √हा (ओँहाक् त्यागे ३. ९) and hence √हा takes the affix ‘क्त्वा’। The latter action is अवाप्स्यसि (shall obtain).

    2. From which two other verbal roots (besides √हा (ओँहाक् त्यागे ३. ९)) can हित्वा be derived?
    Answer: हित्वा can also be derived from the verbal roots √हि (हि गतौ वृद्धौ च ५.

By 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले ।
Note: Here 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prohibits the affix ‘त्वा’ from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
    Note: 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
    ‘हित्वा’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च । ‘हित्वा’ also gets the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः।

By 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले ।
By 7-4-42 दधातेर्हिः, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
Note: Here 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prohibits the affix ‘त्वा’ from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
    Note: 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
    ‘हित्वा’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च । ‘हित्वा’ also gets the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः।

    3. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 7-4-43 जहातेश्च क्त्वि (used in step 3), the काशिका says – जहातेर्निर्देशाद् जिहातेर्न भवति। Please explain.
Answer: In the धातु-पाठ: there are two verbal roots √हा – one is √हा (ओहाङ् गतौ #३.८) and the other is √हा (ओँहाक् त्यागे ३. ९). The सूत्रम् 7-4-43 जहातेश्च क्त्वि applies only to the latter verbal root and not the former. How do we know this? The term जहाते: used in the सूत्रम् 7-4-43 जहातेश्च क्त्वि is षष्ठी-एकवचनम् of जहाति। जहाति is derived by adding the affix श्तिप् to the verbal root √हा (ओँहाक् त्यागे ३. ९). The derivation is as follows –

By the वार्त्तिकम् – इक्श्तिपौ धातुनिर्देशे इति वक्तव्यम् (under 3-3-108) – The affix इक् as also the affix श्तिप् may be used by पाणिनि: to make reference to a धातु: (verbal root.)
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 2-4-75 जुहोत्यादिभ्यः श्लुः।
By 6-1-10 श्लौ।
By 7-4-62 कुहोश्चुः, 1-1-50 स्थानेऽन्तरतमः।
By 7-4-59 ह्रस्वः।

On the other hand, by adding the affix श्तिप् to the verbal root √हा (ओहाङ् गतौ #३.८) gives the form जिहाति (and not जहाति)। The derivation is as follows –

By 7-4-76 भृञामित्।
By 7-4-62 कुहोश्चुः, 1-1-50 स्थानेऽन्तरतमः

    The specific use of जहाति in the सूत्रम् 7-4-43 जहातेश्च क्त्वि restricts its application to the verbal root √हा (ओँहाक् त्यागे ३. ९).
So when it comes to the verbal root √हा (ओहाङ् गतौ #३.८), the सूत्रम् 7-4-43 does not apply – there is no substitution ‘हि’। Thus adding the affix ‘त्वा’ to the verbal root √हा (ओहाङ् गतौ #३.८) gives हात्वा (and not हित्वा)।

    4. Can you spot the affix ‘खश्’ in the commentary?
Answer: The affix ‘खश्’ is used in the form पण्डितंमन्यम्।

    The विग्रह: is पण्‍डितमात्‍मानं मन्‍यते = पण्‍डितंमन्‍यः – one who considers himself to be a scholar

By 3-2-83 आत्ममाने खश्च – When in composition with a सुबन्तं पदम् (a पदम् which ends in a सुँप् affix), the verbal root √मन् (मनँ ज्ञाने ४. ७३) may take the the affix ‘खश्’ – as well as the affix ‘णिनिँ’ – provided the agent of the verbal root is also its object. The affix खश् has the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्।
    Note: The term सुपि (which comes as अनुवृत्ति: in to the सूत्रम् 3-2-83 from the सूत्रम् 3-2-78 सुप्यजातौ णिनिस्ताच्छील्ये) ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘पण्डित + ङस्’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
The affix खश् has the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्। This allows 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन् to apply in the next step.
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।

    Now we form the compound between ‘पण्डित ङस्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘मन्य’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्। Note: Here ‘पण्डित ङस्’ is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम्।
In the compound, ‘पण्डित ङस्’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌।
    ‘पण्डित ङस् + मन्‍य’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.
By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।
‘पण्डितम्’ gets the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्। This allows 8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः to apply in the next step.
By 8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः।
By 8-4-59 वा पदान्तस्य।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of ‘अम्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

    5. Which कृत् affix is used to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘ज्ञ’ used in the commentary?
    Answer: The affix ‘क’ is used to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘ज्ञ’ – from the verbal root √ज्ञा (ज्ञा अवबोधने ९. ४३).

By 3-1-135 इगुपधज्ञाप्रीकिरः कः – The affix ‘क’ may be used following
    i) a verbal root which has a penultimate इक् letter
    ii) the verbal root √ज्ञा (ज्ञा अवबोधने ९.
Note: As per 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌, the affix ‘क’ is used here in the sense of the agent of the action.

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Abandoning Ayodhyā, Lakṣmaṇa went to the forest to serve Śrī Rāma.”

    Easy questions:

    1. Can you spot the substitution ‘रिङ्’ in the commentary?
Answer: The substitution ‘रिङ्’ is used in the form व्यवह्रियते – derived from the verbal root √हृ (हृञ् हरणे १. १०४६) along with the उपेसर्गौ ‘वि’ and ‘अव’।
Please refer to answer to question 1 in the following comment for derivation of the form

    ‘वि’ and ‘अव’ are the उपसर्गौ (ref: 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे, 1-4-80 ते प्राग्धातोः।)
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-89 उतो वृद्धिर्लुकि हलि been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-89 उतो वृद्धिर्लुकि हलि has been used in the form स्तौति – derived from the verbal root √स्तु (ष्टुञ् स्तुतौ २.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।
By 7-3-89 उतो वृद्धिर्लुकि हलि – a root ending in the short vowel ‘उ’ whose विकरणः has taken लुक् (elision) gets वृद्धिः as the substitution when followed by a हलादि-सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः (a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः beginning with a consonant) which is a पित् (has the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्), provided there is no reduplication (अभ्यासः)।
