Translation – You grant the wishes of those who take refuge in You. Therefore, when I proceed to create the universe, which will be nothing but an exhibition of Your own creative power, be pleased to fill my mind with (the thought of) each and every exploit You may perform in course of the descents You take along with Your own divine Energy, Goddess Ramā, manifesting many a divine virtue, so that I may remain untainted by the impurities (in the shape of egotism etc.) attaching to the work of creation (23). I am the deity presiding over the Mahat-tattva, which represents Your power of understanding, one of the innumerable powers possessed by You, and sprang from the pool of Your navel even while You, the Supreme Person, slept on these waters. Therefore, as I proceed to bring to light the wonderful creation, which will be Your own manifestation, let not my utterance of the words of the Veda fail (24).

The पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘निगम’ is derived from the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७) with the उपसर्ग: ‘नि’।

By 3-3-119 गोचरसंचरवहव्रजव्यजापणनिगमाश्च – ‘गोचर’, ‘संचर’, ‘वह’, ‘व्रज’, ‘व्यज’, ‘आपण’ and ‘निगम’ are given as ready-made proper nouns ending in the affix ‘घ’ to denote in the masculine gender the instrument or the locus of the action.

See question 2.

‘निगम’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

The विवक्षा is षष्ठी-एकवचनम्।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।

By 7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः – Following a अङ्गम् ending in the letter ‘अ’, the affixes ‘टा’, ‘ङसिँ’ and ‘ङस्’ are replaced respectively by ‘इन’, ‘आत्’ and ‘स्य’। As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य the entire affix ‘ङस्’ is replaced.

Questions:

1. Where has the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७) been used with the उपसर्ग: ‘नि’ in Chapter Nine of the गीता?

2. Commenting on the affix ‘घ’ implied in the ready-made forms given in the सूत्रम् 3-3-119 गोचरसंचरवहव्रजव्यजापणनिगमाश्च (used in step 1), the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – ‘हलश्च’ इति वक्ष्यमाणस्य घञोऽपवाद:। Please explain.

3. In the verses can you spot three words in which the सूत्रम् 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे has been used?

4. Why doesn’t the सूत्रम् 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः apply in the form ‘विक्रम’?

5. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix घञ् in the form ‘अवतार’ (used as part of the compound गृहीतगुणावतारः in the verses)?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“For one who is liberated what is the use of (with) the Veda?” To express the meaning of ‘for’ use the षष्ठी विभक्ति: with ‘one who is liberated.’ Use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रयोजन’ for ‘use.’

Easy questions:

1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the augment इट् in करिष्यति?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-4-75 जुहोत्यादिभ्यः श्लुः been used in the verses?

  1. 1. Where has the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७) been used with the उपसर्ग: ‘नि’ in Chapter Nine of the गीता?
Answer: The verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७) has been used with the उपसर्ग: ‘नि’ in the form निगच्छति in the following verse of Chapter Nine of the गीता –

Please refer to question 1 in the following comment for derivation of the form

    2. Commenting on the affix ‘घ’ implied in the ready-made forms given in the सूत्रम् 3-3-119 गोचरसंचरवहव्रजव्यजापणनिगमाश्च (used in step 1), the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – ‘हलश्च’ इति वक्ष्यमाणस्य घञोऽपवाद:। Please explain.
Answer: The affix ‘घ’ implied in the ready-made forms given in the सूत्रम् 3-3-119 गोचरसंचरवहव्रजव्यजापणनिगमाश्च is a अपवाद: (exception) to the affix ‘घञ्’ prescribed by the later सूत्रम् 3-3-121 हलश्च।

    3. In the verses can you spot three words in which the सूत्रम् 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे has been used?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे has been used in the forms सृजतः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सृजत्’, षष्ठी-एकवचनम्), विवृण्वतः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विवृण्वत्’, षष्ठी-एकवचनम्), सतः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सत्’, षष्ठी-एकवचनम्)।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सृजत्’ is derived form the verbal root √सृज् (सृजँ विसर्गे ६. १५०) as follows –
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे – The affix ‘लँट्’ is replaced by ‘शतृँ’/’शानच्’ as long as the derived word is in agreement with (has the same reference as) a word which ends in a nominal ending other than the nominative. Note: Since the verbal root √सृज् is devoid of any indications for bringing in a आत्मनेपदम् affix, it takes a परस्मैपदम् affix as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्। As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, ‘शतृँ’ has the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा while as per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, ‘शानच्’ has the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। Therefore the verbal root √सृज् takes the affix ‘शतृँ’ (and not ‘शानच्’) here.
By 3-1-77 तुदादिभ्यः शः।
Note: Since the सार्वधातुकम् affix ‘श’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्), by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। This allows 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to prevent 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च from applying.
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
    ‘सृजत्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विवृण्वत्’ is derived form the verbal root √वृ (वृञ् वरणे ५. ८) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘वि’ as follows –

Note: As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, ‘शतृँ’ has the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा while as per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, ‘शानच्’ has the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। The verbal root √वृ is उभयपदी। Here it has taken the परस्मैपदम् affix ‘शतृँ’।
By 3-1-73 स्वादिभ्यः श्नुः। Note: This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ ।
Note: Since the सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: ‘नु’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्), by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents the गुणादेशः for the ending letter ‘ऋ’ (of the अङ्गम् ‘वृ’) which would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः। Similarly, since the सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: ‘अत्’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्), by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents the गुणादेश: for the ending letter ‘उ’ (of the अङ्गम् ‘वृनु’) which would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 6-4-87 हुश्नुवोः सार्वधातुके।
    ‘विवृण्वत्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सत्’ is derived form the verbal root √अस् (असँ भुवि २. ६०) as follows –

Note: Since the verbal root √अस् is devoid of any indications for bringing in a आत्मनेपदम् affix, it takes a परस्मैपदम् affix as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्। As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, ‘शतृँ’ has the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा while as per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, ‘शानच्’ has the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। Therefore the verbal root √अस् takes the affix ‘शतृँ’ (and not ‘शानच्’) here.
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः। Note: The सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: ‘अत्’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्) and hence behaves ङिद्वत् (as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्) by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्। This allows 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः to apply in the next step.
By 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः।
‘सत्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

The विवक्षा in all the above forms is पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-एकवचनम्।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छस्टा…।
Note: 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of the affix ‘अस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

    Similarly विवृण्वतः and सतः।

    4. Why doesn’t the सूत्रम् 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः apply in the form ‘विक्रम’?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-34 नोदात्तोपदेशस्य मान्तस्यानाचमेः prevents 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः from applying in the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विक्रम’।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विक्रम’ is derived from the verbal root √क्रम् (क्रमुँ पादविक्षेपे १. ५४५) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘वि’।

By 3-3-18 भावे।
Note: The वृद्धि: substitute (in place of the penultimate letter ‘अ’ of the अङ्गम् ‘क्रम्’) which would have been done by the सूत्रम् 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः is stopped by the सूत्रम् 7-3-34 नोदात्तोपदेशस्य मान्तस्यानाचमेः – There is no वृद्धिः substitute in place of the penultimate vowel of a verbal root (with the exception of the verbal root √चम् (चमुँ अदने १. ५४०) with the उपसर्गः ‘आङ्’) which is उदात्तोपदेशः and ends in the letter ‘म्’ when followed by the affix चिण् or a कृत् affix which is either ञित् (has the letter ‘ञ्’ as a इत्) or णित् (has the letter ‘ण्’ as a इत्)।
    ‘विक्रम’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    5. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix घञ् in the form ‘अवतार’ (used as part of the compound गृहीतगुणावतारः in the verses)?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-120 अवे तॄस्त्रोर्घञ् prescribes the affix घञ् in the form ‘अवतार’।

Please refer to the following post for the derivation of the form ‘अवतार’ – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2013/06/03/अवतारः-mns/

    Answer: The augment इट् in करिष्यति is prescribed by the सूत्रम् 7-2-70 ऋद्धनोः स्ये।

Please see the following post for the derivation of the form

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-4-75 जुहोत्यादिभ्यः श्लुः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-4-75 जुहोत्यादिभ्यः श्लुः has been used in the form विजह्याम् – derived from the verbal root √हा (ओहाङ् गतौ #३.८) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘वि’।

By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ्, the affix लिङ् is prescribed after a धातुः when used in the sense of command, direction, invitation, request, inquiry and entreaty.
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of ‘अम्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
The letter ‘उ’ in the augment यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थम्)। The letter ‘ट्’ is a इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
By 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्त्यस्य।
By 2-4-75 जुहोत्यादिभ्यः श्लुः – The affix ‘शप्’ following the verbal roots ‘हु’ etc. gets ‘श्लु’ (elision).
By 6-1-10 श्लौ।
By 7-4-62 कुहोश्चुः, 1-1-50 स्थानेऽन्तरतमः।
By 7-4-59 ह्रस्वः।
By 6-4-118 लोपो यि – The letter ‘आ’ of the धातुः √हा (ओँहाक् त्यागे #३.९) is elided when followed by यकारादि: (beginning with the letter ‘य्’) सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः।

    ‘वि’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.
