Today we will look at the form अशकन् 3Ap-लुँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 3.26.62.

Gita Press translation – When all the aforesaid deities (with the exception of the Inner Controller), though active were unable to rouse the Cosmic Being into activity, they re-entered each his own seat in order to rouse Him one by one (62). The god of fire entered His mouth along with the organ of speech; but the Cosmic Being could not be roused even then. The wind-god entered His nostrils along with the olfactory sense; but the Cosmic Being refused to wake up even then (63).

अशकन् is derived from the धातुः √शक् (स्वादि-गणः, शकॢँ शक्तौ, धातु-पाठः # ५. १७)

The ending ऌकारः (which is an इत् by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्) of “शकॢँ” has a उदात्त-स्वरः। Thus √शक् is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, √शक् in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, takes the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default.

By 3-2-110 लुङ्, the affix लुँङ् is prescribed after a verbal root when used in the sense of past.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates “झि” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-4-100 इतश्च, the ending इकारः of a परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययः which came in the place of a ङित्-लकारः is elided.

By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि, when लुँङ् follows, the प्रत्यय: “च्लि” is prescribed after a verbal root.
Note: This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

By 3-1-55 पुषादिद्युताद्यॢदितः परस्मैपदेषु – When a परस्मैपदम् affix follows, the affix “च्लि” is replaced by “अङ्” when following either –
i) a verbal root from the section beginning with √पुष् (पुषँ पुष्टौ ४. ७९) up to the end of the दिवादि-गणः। or
ii) a verbal root from the section beginning with √द्युत् (द्युतँ दीप्तौ १. or
iii) a verbal root which is ऌदित् (which has ऌकारः as a इत्)।

By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः, “अन्त्” comes in as a replacement for the झकारः of a प्रत्यय:।

By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे

By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the “अट्”-आगमः which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “अट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the अङ्गम्।

By 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः

Questions:

1. Where has the verbal root √शक् (शकॢँ शक्तौ ५. १७) been used in a तिङन्तं पदम् for the first time in the गीता?

2. Why doesn’t the सूत्रम् 7-1-9 अतो भिस ऐस्  apply in the form नवभिः (used in the commentary)?

3. Which सूत्रम् is used for the अभ्यास-लोपः in the form भेजे?

4. Where else (besides in अशकन्) has the augment “अट्” been used in the verses?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I was not able to console my friend.” Use the अव्ययम् “सान्त्वयितुम्” for “to console.”

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I hope that you were able to hear my words clearly.” Use the adverb “स्पष्टम्” for “clearly”, the अव्ययम् “श्रोतुम्” for “to hear”  and the अव्ययम् “कच्चित्” to express the meaning of “I hope that.”

Easy Questions:

1. Which सूत्रम् is used for the “नुँम्” augment in the  form खानि?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-113 हलि लोपः  been used in the verses?

  1. 1. Where has the verbal root √शक् (शकॢँ शक्तौ ५. १७) been used in a तिङन्तं पदम् for the first time in the गीता?
Answer: In verse 30 of Chapter 1 the verbal root √शक् (शकॢँ शक्तौ ५. १७) has been used for the first time in the form शक्नोमि।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-73 स्वादिभ्यः श्नुः।
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।

    2. Why doesn’t the सूत्रम् 7-1-9 अतो भिस ऐस् apply in the form नवभिः (used in the commentary)?
Answer: The form नवभिः is derived from the प्रातिपदिकम् “नवन्”।

    “नवन्” has the षट्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-24 ष्णान्ता षट् – A numeral stem ending in षकारः or नकारः gets the designation षट्। The six षट्-सञ्ज्ञा terms defined by 1-1-24 are “पञ्चन्”, “षष्”, “सप्तन्”, “अष्टन्”, “नवन्” and “दशन्”।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा……..। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “भिस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
The ending letter “न्” of the प्रातिपदिकम् “नवन्” (which has पद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-4-17 स्वादिष्वसर्वनामस्थाने) is dropped by 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य। Now as per 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्, this नकार-लोपः (done by 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य) to arrive at the form “नव” is not visible to any prior rule (in the अष्टाध्यायी)। Therefore 7-1-9 अतो भिस ऐस् does not apply.
Note: 8-2-2 नलोपः सुप्स्वरसंज्ञातुग्विधिषु कृति limits the authority of 8-2-1 and says that the नकार-लोपः (done by 8-2-7) is not visible only to those rules that are in the four categories mentioned below – others will see the नकार-लोपः।
    The four categories are:
    1. सुँब्विधौ – rules relating to सुँप् affixes
    2. स्वरविधौ – rules relating to accents (in the वेद:)
    3. सञ्ज्ञाविधौ – rules that give names or designations
    4. कृति तुँग्विधौ – rules that prescribe a तुँक् augment in connection with a कृत्-प्रत्यय:।
    Since the सूत्रम् 7-1-9 अतो भिस ऐस् prescribes a सुँब्विधिः, the नकार-लोपः done by 8-2-7 remains असिद्धः in the eyes of 7-1-9.

    3. Which सूत्रम् is used for the अभ्यास-लोपः in the form भेजे?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-122 तॄफलभजत्रपश्च is used for the अभ्यास-लोपः in the form भेजे derived from √भज् (भजँ सेवायाम् १.

    The विवक्षा is लिँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्, hence the प्रत्ययः is “त”।
By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 6-4-122 तॄफलभजत्रपश्च, the अकार: of the four verbal roots √तॄ (तॄ प्लवनतरणयोः १. ११५३) and √त्रप् (त्रपूँष् लज्जायाम्) takes एकार: as the substitute and simultaneously there is लोप: (elision) of the अभ्यास:, when the प्रत्यय: following is either a –
    (i) लिँट् affix which is कित्, or
    (ii) “थल्” (मध्यम-पुरुष-एकवचनम्) affix which has a “इट्”-आगम:।

Note : By 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्, a लिँट् affix which is not a पित् – does not have पकार: as a इत् – shall be considered to be a कित् (as having ककार: as a इत्), as long as there is no संयोग: (conjunction consonant) prior to the affix. Hence “एश्” is a कित्-प्रत्यय: here. This allows 6-4-122 to apply.

    4. Where else (besides in अशकन्) has the augment “अट्” been used in the verses?
Answer: The augment “अट्” has been used in the form उदतिष्ठत् derived from √स्था (ष्ठा गतिनिवृत्तौ १.
The धातुः “ष्ठा” has an initial षकारः in the धातु-पाठः। By 6-1-64 धात्वादेः षः सः , there is the substitution of सकारः in the place of the initial षकारः of a धातुः। And by the परिभाषा “निमित्तापाये नैमित्तिकस्याप्यपाय:” (when a cause is gone, its effect is also gone) the ठकार-आदेशः for the थकारः, which has come in by 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः, because of the presence of the षकारः, reverts to the थकारः since the cause for the ठकारादेश: no longer exists. So we now have √स्था।

By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्च।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 7-3-78 पाघ्राध्मास्थाम्नादाण्दृश्यर्त्तिसर्त्तिशदसदां पिबजिघ्रधमतिष्ठमनयच्छपश्यर्च्छधौशीयसीदाः।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the “अट्”-आगमः which is उदात्तः।

    “उद्” is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-72 नपुंसकस्य झलचः is used for the “नुँम्” augment in the form खानि (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिदिकम् “ख”, द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्।)
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…।
“शि” gets the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-42 शि सर्वनामस्थानम्।
By 7-1-72 नपुंसकस्य झलचः – When a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix follows, the neuter bases that end in a झल् letter or an अच् (vowel) get the नुँम् augment. As per 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः, the नुँम् augment attaches itself after the last vowel (the ending अकार:) of the अङ्गम् “ख”।
By 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-113 हलि लोपः  been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-2-113 हलि लोपः has been used in the form अस्य (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् “इदम्”, पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-एकवचनम्।)
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…।
By 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
By 7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः।
By 7-2-113 हलि लोपः, the “इद्” of इदम् that is without the ककारः takes लोपः, when the विभक्तिः affixes of the आप्-प्रत्याहारः, which begin with a consonant, follow. This rule is an अपवाद: (exception) to the prior rule 7-2-112 अनाप्यकः।
Only the दकारः of “इद्” would take लोपः by 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य। But the following परिभाषा takes effect: नानर्थकेऽलोन्त्यविधिरनभ्यासविकारे
This means that the rule 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य does not apply in the case of a term that is devoid of meaning, except in the case which involves modification of an अभ्यास:।
In this example, the entire term “इदम्” has meaning but the “इद्” part doesn’t. So 1-1-52 does not apply when it comes to operating on the “इद्” part. Therefore, the “इद्” part completely takes लोपः by 7-2-113.
    Note: आप् is the प्रत्याहारः made of the सुँप् affixes from टा (तृतीया-एकवचनम्) until सुप् (सप्तमी-बहुवचनम्)।
