Today we will look at the form अग्रहीत् 3As-लुँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 4.5.17.

Gita Press translation – Some molested the hermits, while others threatened the wives (of the sacrificer and the priests) and still others seized the divinities who were sitting close to them, even though they tried to run away (16). Maṇimān bound the sage Bhṛgu; Vīrabhadra, Dakṣa (the lord of created beings) himself; Caṇḍīśa, the god Pūṣā (one of the twelve sons of Aditi who preside over the sun month by month) and Nandīśwara seized Bhaga (another god presiding over the sun) (17).

अग्रहीत् is derived from the धातुः √ग्रह् (क्र्यादि-गणः, ग्रहँ उपादाने, धातु-पाठः #९.७१)

The अकारः at the end of “ग्रहँ” gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। This इत् letter has स्वरित-स्वरः and hence this धातुः is उभयपदी।  By 1-3-72 स्वरितञितः कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले, it can take आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः and by 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, it can take परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययाः। Here it has taken a परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययः।

By 3-2-110 लुङ्, the affix लुँङ् is prescribed after a verbal root when used in the sense of past.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च, the ending इकारः of a परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययः which came in the place of a ङित्-लकारः is elided.

By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि, when लुँङ् follows, the प्रत्यय: “च्लि” is prescribed after a verbal root.
Note: This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

By 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्, the affix “च्लि” is substituted by “सिँच्”।

By 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः – an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: beginning with a letter of the वल्-प्रत्याहारः gets the augment “इट्”। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ the “इट्”-आगमः attaches to the beginning of the प्रत्ययः।

By 7-3-96 अस्तिसिचोऽपृक्ते – A अपृक्त-हल् (affix which is a single consonant – ref. 1-2-41 अपृक्त एकाल् प्रत्ययः) takes the “ईट्” augment in the following two cases:
i. The अपृक्त-हल् follows the “सिँच्”-प्रत्यय: which is actually present or
ii. ६०) which is actually present.
1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “ईट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the प्रत्ययः।

Note: At this stage 7-2-3 वदव्रजहलन्तस्याचः would ordain a वृद्धिः substitute in place of the अकारः of the अङ्गम् “ग्रह्”, but it is prohibited by 7-2-4 नेटि
Now 7-2-7 अतो हलादेर्लघोः would prescribe an optional वृद्धिः, but it is prohibited by 7-2-5 ह्म्यन्तक्षणश्वसजागृणिश्व्येदिताम् – When the affix “सिँच्” (which begins with the augment “इट्” and is followed by a परस्मैपदम् affix) follows, the वृद्धिः substitution is prohibited for a अङ्गम् which either – i) ends in the letter “ह्”, “म्” or “य्” or ii) consists of the verbal root √क्षण् (क्षणुँ हिंसायाम् ८. ११६५) or iii) ends in the affix “णि” or iv) has “ए” as a इत्।

By 7-2-37 ग्रहोऽलिटि दीर्घः – When prescribed after the monosyllabic verbal root √ग्रह् (ग्रहँ उपादाने ९. ७१), the augment इट् gets elongated, but not if the affix लिँट् follows.

By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the “अट्”-आगमः which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “अट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the अङ्गम्।

By 8-2-28 इट ईटि, a सकार:, which is preceded by the augment इट् and followed by the augment ईट्, is elided.

See advanced question.

By the वार्त्तिकम् (under 8-2-3सिज्लोप एकादेशे सिद्धो वाच्यः – If a single substitute is to be done, then the elision of the affix सिँच् should be considered सिद्ध: (evident.) This वार्त्तिकम् allows 6-1-01 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः to apply.

Questions:

1. Where has the verbal root √ग्रह् (ग्रहँ उपादाने ९.७१) been used in a तिङन्तं पदम् in Chapter 2 of the गीता?

2. What would have been the final form in this example if लँङ् were used (instead of लुँङ्)? What would be the form if लिँट् were used?

3. Which सूत्रम् is used for the सम्प्रसारणम् in the form जगृहुः?

4. In the verses can you spot a तिङन्तं पदम् where the affix णिच् has been used?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The disciple grasped the teacher’s feet.”

Advanced Questionः

1. The सूत्रम् 8-2-28 इट ईटि says that – A सकार:, which is preceded by the augment इट् and followed by the augment ईट्, is elided. But in the present example (in step 16), we have a ईकारः preceding the सकारः। Then how can the application of 8-2-28 इट ईटि be justified? It is justified by the परिभाषा – “एकदेशविकृतमनन्यवत्।” Please explain.

Easy Questions:

1. The form पूषणम् (द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) is derived from the प्रातिपदिकम् “पूषन्”। Can you recall a सूत्रम् (that we have studied) in which पाणिनि: specifically mentions the प्रातिपदिकम् “पूषन्”?

2. In the verses can you spot a place where the सन्धि-कार्यम् has not been done?
