Today we will look at the form अश्रौष्म 1Ap-लुँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 12.6.4.

। ३ ।। । ४ ।।

Gita Press translation – I do not consider it surprising that the grace of exalted souls, who have given their mind to Śrī Hari (the immortal Lord), descends on the ignorant creatures tormented by agonies (3). We have heard from you the compilation in the form of this Purāṇa, in which the most illustrious Lord has been described as a matter of fact (4).

अश्रौष्म is derived from the धातुः √श्रु (भ्वादि-गणः, श्रु श्रवणे, धातु-पाठः #१.

In the धातु-पाठः, √श्रु has no इत् letters. It is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, in कर्तरि प्रयोग: √श्रु takes the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √श्रु can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:।

By 3-2-110 लुङ्, the affix लुँङ् is prescribed after a verbal root when used in the sense of past.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “मस्” as the substitute for the लकारः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents ending सकारः of “मस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 3-4-99 नित्यं डितः, a उत्तम-पुरुषः affix ending in a सकारः, always gets elided if it is of a लकारः which is ङित्। By 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending सकारः takes लोपः।

By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि, when लुँङ् follows, the प्रत्यय: “च्लि” is prescribed after a verbal root.
Note: This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

By 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्, the affix “च्लि” is substituted by “सिँच्”।

Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the “इट्”-आगम: (for the प्रत्यय: “स्”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः

By 7-2-1 सिचि वृद्धिः परस्मैपदेषु – (The ending letter of) a base (अङ्गम्) which ends in a इक् letter takes the वृद्धि: substitute when followed by the affix “सिँच्” which is in turn followed by a परस्मैपदम् affix.

By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the “अट्”-आगमः which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “अट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the अङ्गम्।

By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:, the letter “स्” is replaced by the cerebral “ष्” when preceded either by a letter of the इण्-प्रत्याहार: or a letter of the क-वर्ग: (“क्”, “ख्”, “ग्”, “घ्”, “ङ्”)। This substitution only takes place if the “स्” is an आदेश: (substitute) or part of a प्रत्यय: (affix.)

Questions:

१०९२) has been used with लुँङ् in only one word in the गीता। Which one is it?

2. The वृत्तिः of the सूत्रम् 7-2-1 सिचि वृद्धिः परस्मैपदेषु says इगन्ताङ्गस्य वृद्धिः स्यात् परस्मैपदे सिचि। Commenting on this the Please explain.

3. Can you spot the affix “श्यन्” in the verses?

4. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-51 णेरनिटि been used in the verses?

5. Which सूत्रम् is used for the “नुँम्”-आगमः in the form अभिनन्दति (used in the commentary)?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“We have not heard this song before.” Use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “गीत” for “song” and the अव्ययम् “प्राक्” for “before.”

Easy Questions:

1. The word महताम् used in the verses is पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-बहुवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “महत्”। In which सूत्रम् (which we have studied) does पाणिनि: specifically mention the प्रातिपदिकम् “महत्”?

2. Can you spot two words in the verses wherein the “अस्मद्”-प्रातिपदिकम् has been used?

१०९२) has been used with लुँङ् in only one word in the गीता। Which one is it?
Answer: The verbal root √श्रु (श्रु श्रवणे १. १०९२) has been used with लुँङ् in the form अश्रौषम् in verse 74 of Chapter 18.

By 3-2-110 लुङ्, the affix लुँङ् is prescribed after a verbal root when used in the sense of past.
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-101 तस्थस्थमिपां तांतंतामः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकार: of “अम्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि।
By 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्।
By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:।

    2. The वृत्तिः of the सूत्रम् 7-2-1 सिचि वृद्धिः परस्मैपदेषु says इगन्ताङ्गस्य वृद्धिः स्यात् परस्मैपदे सिचि। Commenting on this the Please explain.
Answer: As per the परिभाषा 1-1-3 इको गुणवृद्धी – When a गुणः or वृद्धि: substitution is prescribed (without specifying the स्थानी – the term to be substituted) using the term “गुण” or “वृद्धि”, then it should be understood to be in place of a इक् letter only. In the सूत्रम् 7-2-1 सिचि वृद्धिः परस्मैपदेषु, a वृद्धिः operation has been specified using the term वृद्धिः but without specifying the स्थानी। Hence by the परिभाषा 1-1-3 इको गुणवृद्धी we understand that the letter to be replaced is a इक् letter.

The परिभाषा 1-1-72 येन विधिस्तदन्तस्य says that – A qualifier by means of which an injunction is made stands for a term which ends in it as well as for itself. The सूत्रम् 7-2-1 सिचि वृद्धिः परस्मैपदेषु belongs to the अधिकारः of 6-4-1 अङ्गस्य। Hence the term इकः qualifies अङ्गस्य and implies that the वृद्धिः substitute shall replace a अङ्गम् ending in a इक् letter. This explains the वृत्तिः “इगन्ताङ्गस्य वृद्धिः स्यात्।” Note: As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending इक् letter of the अङ्गम् gets the वृद्धिः substitute.

    3. Can you spot the affix “श्यन्” in the verses?
    Answer: The affix “श्यन्” is seen in the form मन्ये derived from the धातुः √मन् (दिवादि-गणः, मनँ ज्ञाने, धातु-पाठः #४.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन्, the श्यन्-प्रत्यय: is placed after the verbal roots belonging to the दिवादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।

    4. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-51 णेरनिटि been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-51 णेरनिटि has been used in the word अनुवर्ण्यते derived from √वर्ण (वर्ण वर्णक्रियाविस्तारगुणवचनेषु १०. The ending अकारः of “वर्ण” is not a अनुनासिक: and hence does not get the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्।

By 3-1-25 सत्यापपाशरूपवीणातूलश्लोकसेनालोमत्वचवर्मवर्णचूर्णचुरादिभ्यो णिच्।
By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः, when an आर्धधातुकम् affix follows, the अकारः at the end of a अङ्गम् is elided if the अङ्गम् ends in a अकार: at the time when the आर्धधातुकम् affix is prescribed.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः।
Note: The affix ‘ते’ gets the designation सार्वधातुकम् by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्। This allows 3-1-67 to apply in the next step.
By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्। Note: The affix ‘यक्’ gets the designation आर्धधातुकम् by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः। This allows 6-4-51 to apply below.
By 6-4-51 णेरनिटि, the “णि”-प्रत्यय: is elided when followed by an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: which does not have the augment “इट्”। Note: The affix “य” cannot take the augment “इट्” (by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः) because “य” does not begin with a “वल्” letter.

    “अनु” is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    5. Which सूत्रम् is used for the “नुँम्”-आगमः in the form अभिनन्दति (used in the commentary)?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-58 इदितो नुम् धातोः is used for the “नुँम्”-आगमः in the form अभिनन्दति derived from √नन्द् (टुनदिँ समृद्धौ १. ७०).

    The “टु” at the beginning of “टुनदिँ” gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-5 आदिर्ञिटुडवः। The इकारः at the end gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्। Therefore this धातुः is an इदित्। Both the “टु” and the “इ” take लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः and only “नद्” remains.
By 7-1-58 इदितो नुम् धातोः – A धातुः which has इकारः as an इत् gets the नुँम्-आगमः। As per 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः the नुँम्-आगमः attaches itself after the last vowel (अकार:) of “नद्”।
Note: The सूत्रम् 7-1-58 इदितो नुम् धातोः comes in the “6-4-1 अङ्गस्य” अधिकार:, and would normally have to wait till an अङ्गम् is created (by adding a प्रत्यय:)। But the use of “धातोः” in 7-1-58 is taken as an indication that this rule is to be applied as soon as the धातु: is taken for use from the धातु-पाठ: – without waiting for any other operation.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।

    “अभि” is the उपसर्ग: (ref.

    Answer: पाणिनि: specifically mentions the प्रातिपदिकम् “महत्” in the सूत्रम् 6-4-10 सान्त महतः संयोगस्य – When a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix other than a सम्बुद्धिः follows, the letter preceding the नकारः of a base that ends in a सान्त-संयोग: (a conjunct ending in a सकार:) or of the word महत् is elongated.

    2. Can you spot two words in the verses wherein the “अस्मद्”-प्रातिपदिकम् has been used?
Answer: The “अस्मद्”-प्रातिपदिकम् has been used in the words अहम् (प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) and वयम् (प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्)।

Note: The प्रातिपदिकम् “अस्मद्” (so also “युष्मद्”) has  the same forms in all the three genders.
