तत्रसुः 3Ap-लिँट्

Today we will look at the form तत्रसुः 3Ap-लिँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 6.10.27.

Gita Press translation “Their stock of missiles and weapons being depleted, they now showered mountainpeaks, trees and stones on the celestial host and the gods split them as before.(26) Finding the aforesaid warriors of Indra secure and unhurt by their volleys of weapons and missiles and unscathed even by the trees, stones and peaks of mountains of every description (hurled by them), the demons led by Vṛtra were filled with dismay.(27)”

तत्रसुः is derived from the धातुः √त्रस् (त्रसीँ उद्वेगे, दिवादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #४. ११)

The ending ईकारः (which is an इत्) of “त्रसीँ” has a उदात्त-स्वरः। Thus √त्रस् is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। (Neither 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम् nor 1-3-72 स्वरितञितः कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले applies.) Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, √त्रस् takes परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default.

The विवक्षा is लिँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्

(1) त्रस् + लिँट् । By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट् , the affix लिँट् (Perfect Tense) comes after a verbal root in the sense of the past not of today, provided that the action is unperceived by the narrator.

(2) त्रस् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) त्रस् + झि । 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “झि” as the substitute for the लकारः। By 3-4-115 लिट् च, a तिङ्-प्रत्यय: which comes in place of लिँट् gets the आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा। Therefore “झि” gets the आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा। This prevents 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ (which requires a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: to follow) from applying.

(4) त्रस् + उस् । By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः, when they come in place of लिँट्, the nine परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: – “तिप्”, “तस्”, “झि”, “सिप्”, “थस्”, “थ”, “मिप्”, “वस्” and “मस्” – are substituted by “णल्”, “अतुस्”, “उस्”, “थल्”, “अथुस्”, “अ”, “णल्”, “व” and “म” respectively.
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “उस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

(5) त्रस् त्रस् + उस् । By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य , when लिँट् follows a verbal root, there is reduplication of the first portion – containing a single vowel – of the verbal root which is not already reduplicated. But if the verbal root (that has more than one vowel) begins with a vowel, then the reduplication is of the second portion – containing a single vowel.

(6) त त्रस् + उस् । By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः, of the consonants of a reduplicate (अभ्यासः – ref. 6-1-4 पूर्वोऽभ्यासः), only the one (if any) at the beginning is retained, the rest are elided. See question 2.

(7) तत्रसुः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ – 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः

Questions:

1. In the गीता can you spot a word in which the विवक्षा is the same as in this example – लिँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्?

2. Why doesn’t 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि apply in this example after step 6? (Which condition is not satisfied?)

3. What would be an alternate final form in this example?

4. Where else (besides in तत्रसुः) has लिँट् been used in the verses?

5. Can you spot an augment “अट्” in the verses?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Seeing the mighty Kumbhakarṇa all the monkeys were filled with dismay.” Use the अव्ययम् “दृष्ट्वा” for “seeing (having seen)”, use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “बलिन्” for “mighty.”

Easy questions:

1. Please do पदच्छेद: of तांश्च and mention the relevant rules.

2. Which सूत्रम् is used for the substitution “ऐस्” in the form द्रुमै: (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “द्रुम”, तृतीया-बहुवचनम्)?

  1. 1. In the गीता can you spot a word in which the विवक्षा is the same as in this example – लिँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्?
Answer: The word दध्मुः in verse 18 of Chapter 1 has the same विवक्षा as in this example.
    द्रुपदो द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्वशः पृथिवीपते ।
    सौभद्रश्च महाबाहुः शङ्खान्दध्मुः पृथक्पृथक् ।। 1-18 ।।

    दध्मु: is derived from √ध्मा (ध्मा शब्दाग्निसंयोगयोः १. १०७६).
    ध्मा + लिँट् । By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
    = ध्मा + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = ध्मा + झि । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
    = ध्मा + उस् । By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “उस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
    = ध्मा ध्मा + उस् । By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य। Note: As per 1-1-59 द्विर्वचनेऽचि, we apply 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य before applying 6-4-64 आतो लोप इटि च।
    = धा ध्मा + उस् । By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
    = ध ध्मा + उस् । By 7-4-59 ह्रस्वः।
    = ध ध्म् + उस् । By 6-4-64 आतो लोप इटि च। Note: As per 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्, here the “उस्”-प्रत्यय: is कित्। This allows 6-4-64 to apply.
    = धध्मु: । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।
    = दध्मु: । By 8-4-54 अभ्यासे चर्च।

    2. Why doesn’t 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि apply in this example after step 6? (Which condition is not satisfied?)
Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि says – The अकार: of a अङ्गम् takes एकार: as the substitute and simultaneously there is लोप: (elision) of the अभ्यास:, when all the following conditions are satisfied:
    (i) the अकार: is preceded and followed by a single (non-conjunct) consonant
(ii) the अङ्गम् is followed by a लिँट् affix which is कित्
(iii) in place of the first letter of the अङ्गम् there is no आदेश: (substitution) that is based on the लिँट् affix.

In the above example the first condition is not satisfied. The अकारः of the अङ्गम् is preceded by a conjunct consonant “त्र्” । Therefore 6-4-120 does not apply.

    3. What would be an alternate final form in this example?
Answer: An alternate final form would be त्रेसुः। This is due to the optionality brought in by 6-4-124 वा जॄभ्रमुत्रसाम्।

    The विवक्षा is लिँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्।
    त्रस् + लिँट् । By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
    = त्रस् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = त्रस् + झि । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
    = त्रस् + उस् । By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “उस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
    = त्रस् त्रस् + उस् । By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
    = त त्रस् + उस् । By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
    = त्रेस् + उस् । By 6-4-124 वा जॄभ्रमुत्रसाम् – Optionally, the अकार: of the three verbal roots √जॄ (जॄ वयोहानौ ९. २७), √भ्रम् (भ्रमुँ चलने १. ९८५, भ्रमुँ अनवस्थाने ४. १०२) and √त्रस् (त्रसीँ उद्वेगे ४. ११) takes एकार: as the substitute and simultaneously there is लोप: (elision) of the अभ्यास:, when the प्रत्यय: following is either a – (i) लिँट् affix which is कित्, or (ii) “थल्” (मध्यम-पुरुष-एकवचनम्) affix which has a “इट्”-आगम:। Note: As per 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्, here the “उस्”-प्रत्यय: is कित्। This allows 6-4-124 to apply.
    = त्रेसुः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।

    4. Where else (besides in तत्रसुः) has लिँट् been used in the verses?
    Answer: लिँट् has been used in the form चिच्छिदुः derived from √छिद् (छिदिँर् द्वैधीकरणे ७. ३).

    The विवक्षा is लिँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्।
छिद् + लिँट् । By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट् – The affix लिँट् (Perfect Tense) comes after a verbal root in the sense of the past not of today, provided that the action is unperceived by the narrator.
    = छिद् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = छिद् + झि । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
    = छिद् + उस् । By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “उस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा। Note: As per 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्, here the “उस्”-प्रत्यय: is कित्। Therefore 1-1-5 ग्क्ङिति च  stops 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
    = छिद् छिद् + उस् । By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
    = छि छिद् + उस् । By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 8-4-54 अभ्यासे चर्च।

    5. Can you spot an augment “अट्” in the verses?
    Answer: An “अट्”-आगमः is seen in the form अभ्यवर्षन् derived from √वृष् (वृषुँ सेचने हिंसासङ्क्लेशनयोश्च १. ८०३).

    The विवक्षा is लँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्।
    वृष् + लँङ् । By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ्।
    = वृष् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = वृष् + झि । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
    = वृष् + झ् । By 3-4-100 इतश्च।
    = वृष् + शप् + झ् । By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
    = वृष् + अ + झ् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = वर्ष् + अ + झ् । By 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च, 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः।
    = वर्ष् + अ + अन्त् । By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः।
    = वर्षन्त् । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
    = अट् वर्षन्त् । By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the “अट्”-आगमः which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “अट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the अङ्गम्।
    = अवर्षन्त् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = अवर्षन् । By 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः।

    “अभि” is the उपसर्गः (ref. 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे।)
    अभि + अवर्षन् = अभ्यवर्षन् । By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    Answer: बलिनम् कुम्भकर्णम् दृष्ट्वा सर्वे वानराः/कपयः तत्रसुः/त्रेसुः = बलिनं कुम्भकर्णं दृष्ट्वा सर्वे वानरास्/कपयस् तत्रसुः/त्रेसुः।

    Easy questions:

    1. Please do पदच्छेद: of तांश्च and mention the relevant rules.
    Answer: The पदच्छेद: of तांश्च is तान् + च। The सन्धि-कार्यम् is as follows:
    तान् + च
= तांरुँ + च । By 8-3-7 नश्छव्यप्रशान्, when the letter “न्” occurs at the end of a पदम् it is substituted by “रुँ” when a “छव्” letter follows as long as the “छव्” letter is followed by an “अम्” letter. 8-3-4 अनुनासिकात् परोऽनुस्वार: – This rule applies to the section 8-3-5 to 8-3-12. In this section, if the letter preceding the “रुँ” is not nasalized then following that letter (which precedes “रुँ”) the अनुस्वार: comes as an augment.
    = तांर् + च । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = तां: + च । By 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः – The letter “र्” at the end of a पदम् changes to a विसर्ग: when it is either followed by a “खर्” letter or when nothing follows.
    = तांस् + च । By 8-3-34 विसर्जनीयस्य सः –  A विसर्ग: gets replaced by the letter “स्” when a “खर्” letter follows.
    = तांश्च । By 8-4-40 स्तोः श्चुना श्चुः – When the letter “स्” or a letter of the त-वर्ग: (“त्”, “थ्”, “द्”, “ध्”, “न्”) comes in contact with either the letter “श्” or a letter of the च-वर्ग: (“च्”, “छ्”, “ज्”, “झ्”, “ञ्”), then it is replaced respectively by “श्”, च-वर्ग: (“च्”, “छ्”, “ज्”, “झ्”, “ञ्”)।

    2. Which सूत्रम् is used for the substitution “ऐस्” in the form द्रुमै: (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “द्रुम”, तृतीया-बहुवचनम्)?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-9 अतो भिस ऐस् is used for the “ऐस्”-आदेश: in the form द्रुमै: (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “द्रुम”, तृतीया-बहुवचनम्)।
    द्रुम + भिस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
    = द्रुम + ऐस् । By 7-1-9 अतो भिस् ऐस् – Following a अङ्गम् ending in a अकार:, the affix “भिस्” is replaced by “ऐस्”। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “ऐस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
    = द्रुमैस् । By 6-1-88 वृद्धिरेचि। “द्रुमैस्” gets the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम्।
    = द्रुमैः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।
