No commentary on these verses.

Gita Press translation – I therefore depend on you, O gentle one, as the means of accomplishing a great purpose, (even) as the mighty Indra attained his end (in the form of sovereignity of the three worlds, that had been usurped by Bali, the demon king), depending as he did on Lord Viṣṇu (descended in the form of Vāmana, the Divine Dwarf, his younger Brother) (29). Proceed (at once) to Nanda’s Vraja; there reside the two sons of Ānakadundubhi (Vasudeva.) (Please) bring them both here in this chariot; let there be no delay (30).

अगमत् is derived from the धातुः √गम् (भ्वादि-गणः, गमॢँ गतौ, धातु-पाठः #१.

In the धातु-पाठः, ‘गमॢँ’ has one इत् letter – the letter ‘ऌ’ following the letter ‘म्’। This इत् letter has a उदात्त-स्वर:। Thus √गम् is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपदम् affixes। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, √गम् takes परस्मैपदम् affixes by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine affixes from ‘तिप्’ to ‘मस्’ get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √गम् can take only one of these nine affixes in कर्तरि प्रयोग:।

By 3-2-110 लुङ्, the affix लुँङ् is prescribed after a verbal root when used in the sense of past.

By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्

By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च, the ending letter ‘इ’  of a परस्मैपदम् affix which came in the place of a ङित्-लकारः is elided.

By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि, when लुँङ् follows, the affix ‘च्लि’ is prescribed after a verbal root.
Note: This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

By 3-1-55 पुषादिद्युताद्यॢदितः परस्मैपदेषु – When a परस्मैपदम् affix follows, the affix ‘च्लि’ is replaced by ‘अङ्’ when following either –
i) a verbal root from the section beginning with √पुष् (पुषँ पुष्टौ ४. ७९) up to the end of the दिवादि-गणः। or
ii) a verbal root from the section beginning with √द्युत् (द्युतँ दीप्तौ १. or
iii) a verbal root which is ऌदित् (which has ऌकारः as a इत्)।

See questions 2 and 3.

See question 4.

By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the ‘अट्’ augment which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the ‘अट्’ augment at the beginning of the अङ्गम्।

‘अधि’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि

Questions:

1. Where has √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७) been used with लुँङ् in the गीता?

2. How do we know that in the सूत्रम् 3-1-55 पुषादिद्युताद्यॢदितः परस्मैपदेषु, the verbal root √पुष् does not refer to पुषँ पुष्टौ १. The तत्त्वबोधिनी gives the answer as follows – यदि तु पुष पुष्टाविति भौवादिकधातुमारभ्य पुषादिगणो गृह्येत तदा द्युतादिग्रहणमनर्थकं भवेत्। Please explain.

3. In the absence of 3-1-55 पुषादिद्युताद्यॢदितः परस्मैपदेषु, which सूत्रम् would have applied in step 7?

4. After step 8, why doesn’t the

5.  In the verses can you spot a word in which the affix शप् has taken the लुक् elision?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Seeing (having seen) his (own) mother, the child calmed down.” Paraphrase “calmed down” to “went to calmness.” Use the अव्ययम् “दृष्ट्वा” for “having seen”, the pronoun “स्व” (feminine “स्वा”) for “own” and feminine प्रातिपदिकम् “शान्ति” for “calmness.”

Easy Questions:

1. Where has 7-2-112 अनाप्यकः been used in the verses?

2. Which सूत्रम् is used to get यथा + इन्द्रः = यथेन्द्रः?

  1. 1. Where has √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७) been used with लुँङ् in the गीता?
११३७) has been used with in verse 3 of Chapter 2 in the form मा स्म गमः derived from √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १.

By 3-3-176 स्मोत्तरे लङ् च – The affix “लँङ्” as well as “लुँङ्” is to be used after a verbal root when used in connection with “माङ्” followed by “स्म”।
By 3-4-100 इतश्च।
By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि।
By 3-1-55 पुषादिद्युताद्यॢदितः परस्मैपदेषु – When a परस्मैपदम् affix follows, the affix “च्लि” is replaced by “अङ्” when following either –
    i) a verbal root from the section beginning with √पुष् (पुषँ पुष्टौ ४. ७९) up to the end of the दिवादि-गणः। or
    ii) a verbal root from the section beginning with √द्युत् (द्युतँ दीप्तौ १. or
iii) a verbal root which is ऌदित् (which has ऌकारः as a इत्)।
    Note: By 6-4-74 न माङ्योगे, when used in connection with माङ्, a base (अङ्गम्) shall not take the augment अट् or आट्। Here, 6-4-74 prohibits 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः।

    2. How do we know that in the सूत्रम् 3-1-55 पुषादिद्युताद्यॢदितः परस्मैपदेषु, the verbal root √पुष् does not refer to पुषँ पुष्टौ १. The तत्त्वबोधिनी gives the answer as follows – यदि तु पुष पुष्टाविति भौवादिकधातुमारभ्य पुषादिगणो गृह्येत तदा द्युतादिग्रहणमनर्थकं भवेत्। Please explain.
Answer: The verbal root √पुष् occurs in more than one गणः in the धातु-पाठः। The one that is used in the सूत्रम् 3-1-55 is √पुष् (पुषँ पुष्टौ ४. How do we know that 3-1-55  does not refer to the verbal root √पुष् (पुषँ पुष्टौ १. ७९७) in the भ्वादि-गणः? तत्त्वबोधिनी says that if we assume that the verbal root √पुष् (पुषँ पुष्टौ १. ७९७) is used in 3-1-55, then the mention of “द्युतादि” in the सूत्रम् would serve no purpose. This is what is meant by “यदि तु पुष पुष्टाविति भौवादिकधातुमारभ्य पुषादिगणो गृह्येत तदा द्युतादिग्रहणमनर्थकं भवेत्।”

The logic is as follows – In the धातु-पाठः, the “द्युतादि” section (beginning with √द्युत् (द्युतँ दीप्तौ १. ८४२)) in the भ्वादि-गणः comes after the verbal root √पुष् (पुषँ पुष्टौ १. If we were to start from √पुष् (पुषँ पुष्टौ १. ७९७) it would include the “द्युतादि” section also and hence mentioning “द्युतादि” separately would make no sense. The fact that पाणिनिः has mentioned “द्युतादि” separately tells us that in the सूत्रम् 3-1-55 पुषादिद्युताद्यॢदितः परस्मैपदेषु, the verbal root √पुष् does not refer to पुषँ पुष्टौ १.

    3. In the absence of 3-1-55 पुषादिद्युताद्यॢदितः परस्मैपदेषु, which सूत्रम् would have applied in step 7?
    Answer: 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच् would have applied in the absence of 3-1-55 पुषादिद्युताद्यॢदितः परस्मैपदेषु। 3-1-55  is a अपवादः (exception) to 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्।

    4. After step 8, why doesn’t the
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-98 गमहनजनखनघसां लोपः क्ङित्यनङि says – The उपधा (penultimate letter – ref. 1-1-65) of the verbal roots √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ८१२) is elided, when followed by an अजादि-प्रत्ययः which is a कित् or a ङित् with the exclusion of the अङ्-प्रत्ययः
Since in step 8, we have the “अङ्” affix following the अङ्गम् “गम्”, 6-4-98 does not apply even though all the other conditions are satisfied.

    5. In the verses can you spot a word in which the affix शप् has taken the लुक् elision?
Answer: The affix शप् has taken the लुक् elision in the form आसाते derived from √आस् (आसँ उपवेशने २.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of “आताम्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः – The शप्-प्रत्ययः takes the लुक् elision when following a verbal root belonging to अदादि-गणः।

    Answer: 7-2-112 अनाप्यकः has been used in the form अनेन (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् “इदम्”, पुंलिङ्गे तृतीया-एकवचनम्।)

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
By 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
By 7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः – Following a अङ्गम् ending in a अकार:, the affixes “टा”, “ङसिँ” and “ङस्” are replaced respectively by “इन”, “आत्” and “स्य”।
By 7-2-112 अनाप्यकः – The “इद्” part of इदम् that is without the ककारः gets “अन्” as its replacement, when the विभक्तिः affixes of the आप्-प्रत्याहारः follow. आप् is the प्रत्याहारः made of the सुँप् affixes from ‘टा’ until ‘सुप्’।
By 6-1-87 आद्‍गुणः।

    2. Which सूत्रम् is used to get यथा + इन्द्रः = यथेन्द्रः?
    Answer: 6-1-87 आद्‍गुणः is used to get यथा + इन्द्रः = यथ् आ + इ न्द्रः = यथ् न्द्रः = यथेन्द्रः।  By 6-1-87 आद्‍गुणः –  In place of a preceding अवर्ण: letter (अकार: or आकार:) and a following अच् letter, there is a single substitute of a गुण: letter (“अ”, “ए”, “ओ”)। Note: “अ”, “ए” and “ओ” get the गुण-सञ्ज्ञा by the सूत्रम् 1-1-2 अदेङ् गुणः।
