Today we will look at the form अवधीत् 3As-लुँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 3.3.12.

Gita Press translation – Of the demons Śambara, Bāṇa, Mura and Balwala, Dwivida (the monkey chief) and other warriors like Dantavaktra, some He disposed of Himself, while others he caused to be despatched (by Balarāma, Pradyumna and so on) (11). Thereafter He brought about the destruction of monarchs who had joined the sides of your nephews (the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Pāṇḍu,) and who made the entire globe rock as they marched to Kurukṣetra (the scene of Mahābhārata war) with their armies (12).

अवधीत् is derived from the धातुः √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२. २)

The ending अकारः (which is an इत्) of “हनँ” has a उदात्त-स्वरः। Thus √हन् is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, √हन् takes परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default.

By 2-4-43 लुङि च – When the intention is to add the affix लुँङ्, there is a substitution of “वध” in place of √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २). As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य, the entire term “हन्” is replaced by “वध”। By 3-2-110 लुङ्, the affix लुँङ् is prescribed after a verbal root when used in the sense of past.
Note: The substitute “वध” ends in a अकारः।

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च, the ending इकारः of a परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययः which came in the place of a ङित्-लकारः is elided.

By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि, when लुँङ् follows, the प्रत्यय: “च्लि” is prescribed after a verbal root.
Note: This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

By 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्, the affix “च्लि” is substituted by “सिँच्”।

By 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः – an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: beginning with a letter of the वल्-प्रत्याहारः gets the augment “इट्”। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ the “इट्”-आगमः attaches to the beginning of the प्रत्ययः।
Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ does not apply here, because “वध” is अनेकाच् (has more than one vowel) in उपदेशः।

By 7-3-96 अस्तिसिचोऽपृक्ते – A अपृक्त-हल् (affix which is a single consonant – ref. 1-2-41 अपृक्त एकाल् प्रत्ययः) takes the “ईट्” augment in the following two cases:
i. The अपृक्त-हल् follows the “सिँच्”-प्रत्यय: which is actually present or
ii. ६०) which is actually present.
1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “ईट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the प्रत्ययः।

By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः, when an आर्धधातुकम् affix follows, the अकारः at the end of a अङ्गम् is elided if the अङ्गम् ends in a अकार: at the time when the आर्धधातुकम् affix is prescribed.

See question 2.

By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the “अट्”-आगमः which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “अट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the अङ्गम्।

By 8-2-28 इट ईटि, a सकार:, which is preceded by the augment इट् and followed by the augment ईट्, is elided.

By the वार्त्तिकम् under 8-2-3 सिज्लोप एकादेशे सिद्धो वाच्यः – If a single substitute is to be done, then the elision of the affix सिँच् should be considered सिद्ध: (evident.) This वार्त्तिकम् allows 6-1-01 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः to apply.

Questions:

1. Where has √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) been used in a तिङन्तं पदम् for the first time in the गीता?

2. Why doesn’t 7-2-7 अतो हलादेर्लघोः apply after step 13?

3. In the verses can you spot a तिङन्तं पदम् which is a आर्ष-प्रयोगः (irregular grammatical form)?

4. Which सूत्रम् is used for the एकारादेशः in the form चकम्पे?

5. Why doesn’t 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि apply in the form चचाल? (Which condition is not satisfied?)

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“How many enemies did the our army commander kill?” Use the प्रातिपदिकम् “कति” for “how many” and “सेनानी” for “army commander.”

Easy Questions:

1. Where  has the सूत्रम् 7-3-104 ओसि च been used in the verses?

2. Which सूत्रम् is used for the augment “सुँट्” in the form येषाम्?

  1. 1. Where has √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) been used in a तिङन्तं पदम् for the first time in the गीता?
२) has been used in the form अभ्यहन्यन्त in verse 13 of Chapter 1.

By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः।
By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।

    “अभि” is the उपसर्ग: (ref.
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    2. Why doesn’t 7-2-7 अतो हलादेर्लघोः apply after step 13?
Answer: 7-2-7 अतो हलादेर्लघोः cannot apply because as per 1-1-57 अचः परस्मिन् पूर्वविधौ, the लोप: done by 6-4-48 अतो लोपः has स्थानिवद्भाव: (it behaves like the item it replaced – अकार:) when it comes to an operation (वृद्धि:) that would be performed to the left of it. Hence as far as 7-2-7 is concerned, the उपधा of the अङ्गम् is the धकार: and hence it cannot apply.

    3. In the verses can you spot a तिङन्तं पदम् which is a आर्ष-प्रयोगः (irregular grammatical form)?
Answer: A आर्ष-प्रयोगः is seen in the form घातयत्। Here घातयत् has not taken the अडागमः by 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः। The grammatically correct form is अघातयत्
    अघातयत् is derived from √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २).

By 3-1-26 हेतुमति च।
By 7-3-54 हो हन्तेर्ञ्णिन्नेषु – The हकारः of √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) gets replaced by a letter of the कवर्ग: when followed by an affix with ञकारः or णकारः as an इत् , or when followed (immediately) by a नकारः।
By 7-3-32 हनस्तोऽचिण्णलोः – The ending letter (नकार:) of the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) is replaced by a तकार:, when followed by a प्रत्यय: (other than “चिण्” or “णल्”) which is either ञित् or णित्।
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।

By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्च।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the “अट्”-आगमः which is उदात्तः। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ the “अट्”-आगमः attaches to the beginning of the अङ्गम्। Note: As mentioned above, this step has been irregularly skipped in the text. The likely reason is to fit the meter.

    4. Which सूत्रम् is used for the एकारादेशः in the form चकम्पे?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-4-81 लिटस्तझयोरेशिरेच् is used for the एकारादेशः (“एश्”-आदेशः) in the form चकम्पे derived from √कम्प् (कपिँ चलने १.

    The इकारः at the end of “कपिँ” gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्। Therefore this धातुः is an इदित्। The इकारः takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

By 7-1-58 इदितो नुम् धातोः, a धातुः which has इकारः as an इत् gets the नुँम्-आगमः। Note: The सूत्रम् 7-1-58 इदितो नुम् धातोः comes in the “6-4-1 अङ्गस्य” अधिकार:, and would normally have to wait till an अङ्गम् is created (by adding a प्रत्यय:)। But the use of “धातोः” in 7-1-58 is taken as an indication that this rule is to be applied as soon as the धातु: is taken for use from the धातु-पाठ: – without waiting for any other operation.
As per 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः the नुँम्-आगमः attaches itself after the last vowel (अकार:) of “कप्”।
By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि, the नकारः (which is not at the end of the पदम्) gets अनुस्वारः as replacement since a झल् letter follows.
By 8-4-58 अनुस्वारस्य ययि परसवर्णः, when a यय् letter follows, अनुस्वारः gets the सवर्णः of the यय् letter as its replacement.

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
By 3-4-81 लिटस्तझयोरेशिरेच्, when they come in place of लिँट्, the affixes “त” and “झ” take the substitutions “एश्” and “इरेच्” respectively. As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल् शित् सर्वस्य,  the entire term “त” is replaced by “एश्”।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 7-4-62 कुहोश्चुः।

    5. Why doesn’t 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि apply in the form चचाल? (Which condition is not satisfied?)

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः। **
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य। Note: As per 1-1-59 द्विर्वचनेऽचि, we apply 6-1-8 before 7-2-116.
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः, a penultimate (उपधा) अकार: of a अङ्गम् gets वृद्धिः as the substitute when followed by a प्रत्ययः which is a ञित् or a णित्।

**Note:  By the सूत्रम् 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि – The अकार: of a अङ्गम् takes एकार: as the substitute and simultaneously there is लोप: (elision) of the अभ्यास:, when all the following conditions are satisfied:
    (i) the अकार: is preceded and followed by a single (non-conjunct) consonant
(ii) the अङ्गम् is followed by a लिँट् affix which is कित्
(iii) in place of the first letter of the अङ्गम् there is no आदेश: (substitution) that is based on the लिँट् affix.
Here in the above example, condition (i) and condition (iii) are satisfied. But condition (ii) is not satisfied.
As per 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित् – A लिँट् affix which is not a पित् – does not have पकार: as a इत् – shall be considered to be a कित् (as having ककार: as a इत्), as long as there is no संयोग: (conjunct consonant) prior to the affix. Here the णल् affix came in place of तिप् which a पित्। Therefore by स्थानिवद्-भाव: (ref: 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ) it also behaves like a पित्। Therefore 1-2-5 cannot make it a कित्, and hence 6-4-120 cannot apply here.

    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-104 ओसि च has been used in the form पक्षयोः (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “पक्ष”, षष्ठी-द्विवचनम्।)

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “ओस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 7-3-104 ओसि च – The ending अकार: of a अङ्गम् is replaced by एकार: when followed by the affix “ओस्”।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।

    2. Which सूत्रम् is used for the augment “सुँट्” in the form येषाम्?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-52 आमि सर्वनाम्नः सुट् is used for the “सुँट्”-आगम: in the form येषाम् (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् “यद्”, पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्)।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकार: of “आम्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending दकार: gets replaced.
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
By 7-1-52 आमि सर्वनाम्नः सुट् – The affix “आम्” prescribed to a pronoun (सर्वनाम-शब्द:), takes the augment “सुँट्” when the base (अङ्गम्) ends in a अवर्ण: (अकार: or आकार:)। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the आगम: “सुँट्” joins at the beginning of the प्रत्यय: “आम्”।
By 7-3-103 बहुवचने झल्येत्‌।
By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययोः।
