Gita Press translation – Sañjaya said: Thus I heard the mysterious and thrilling conversation between Śrī Kṛṣṇa and the high-souled Arjuna, the son of Kuntī (74). Having been blessed with the divine vision by the grace of Śrī Vyāsa, I heard in person this supremely esoteric gospel from the Lord of Yoga, Śrī Kṛṣṇa Himself, imparting it to Arjuna (75). Remembering, over and over, that sacred and mystic conversation between Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna, O King! I rejoice again and yet again (76). Remembering also, again and again, that most wonderful form of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, great is my wonder and I am thrilled over and over again (77). Wherever there is Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the Lord of Yoga, and wherever there is Arjuna, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, goodness, victory, glory and unfailing righteousness will surely be there : such is my conviction (78).

(1) केशवश्चार्जुनश्च = केशवार्जुनौ – Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna.

By 2-2-29 चार्थे द्वन्द्वः – Two or more terms having the designation पदम् and standing in a relation expressible by ‘च’ (‘and’) may optionally compound to yield a compound called द्वन्द्वः।

As per the सूत्रम् 2-2-33 अजाद्यदन्तम्‌, ‘अर्जुन’ should be placed in the prior position in the compound because ‘अर्जुन’ begins with a vowel and ends in the letter ‘अ’ while ‘केशव’ does not. But as per the वार्तिकम् (under 2-2-34 अल्पाच्तरम्‌) अभ्यर्हितं च – In a द्वन्द्व: compound the term which denotes that which commands greater respect is placed in the prior position. In the present example, ‘केशव’ is the name of the Lord/teacher while ‘अर्जुन’ is the name of the devotee/student hence clearly ‘केशव सुँ’ denotes that which commands greater respect and is placed in the prior position in the compound.
Note: This वार्तिकम् over-rides all the other rules which prescribe placement in a prior position in a द्वन्द्व: compound.

Note: ‘केशव सुँ + अर्जुन सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.

By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

The विवक्षा is षष्ठी-द्विवचनम् ।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘ओस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 7-3-104 ओसि च, the ending letter ‘अ’ of a प्रातिपदिकम् changes to letter ‘ए’ when followed by the affix ‘ओस्’ ।

अयादेशः by 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

  1. 1. What is the विग्रह: of the compound धनुर्धरः used in the verses?
Answer: The विग्रह: of the compound धनुर्धरः is धनुषो धरः = धनुर्धरः – the wielder of the bow.

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ’धर’ is derived from the verbal root √धृ (धृञ् धारणे १. १०४७) as follows –
By वार्तिकम् (under 3-1-134 नन्दिग्रहिपचादिभ्यो ल्युणिन्यचः) – अज्विधिः सर्वधातुभ्यः – The affix ‘अच्’ may be used after any verbal root (to denote the agent/doer of the action.)
Note: The affix ‘अ’ gets आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः। This allows 7-3-84 to apply below.
Note: Since the affix ‘अ’ does not begin with a letter belonging to the प्रत्याहार: ‘वल्’, it cannot take the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been prescribed by the सूत्रम् 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।

Now we form the षष्ठी-तत्पुरुषः compound ‘धनुर्धर’ as follows –
By 2-2-8 षष्ठी।
By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – the term ‘धनुस् ङस्’ gets the designation उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-8 (which prescribes the compounding) the term षष्ठी ends in the nominative case. Hence ’धनुस् ङस्’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌।
Note: ‘धनुस् ङस् + धर सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.
By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।
Note: Now ‘धनुस् ’ has the designation पदम् as per 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्। This allows 8-2-66 to apply next.
By 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः।
Note: As per the सूत्रम् 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः, the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘धनुर्धर’ is an adjective since the latter member ‘धर’ of the compound is an adjective. Here it is used in the masculine since धनुर्धरः is qualifying पार्थः। The compound declines like राम-शब्द:।

    2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘आ’ in the form महात्मनः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘महात्मन्’, पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-एकवचनम्) used in the verses?
Answer: The substitution ‘आ’ in the form महात्मनः is prescribed by the सूत्रम् 6-3-46 आन्महतः समानाधिकरणजातीययोः – The ending letter (‘त्’) of ‘महत्’ is substituted by ‘आ’ when ‘महत्’ is followed by either –
    i) a latter member (of a compound) which has समानाधिकरणम् – refers to the same item as does ‘महत्’ or
    ii) affix ‘जातीय’ (ref.
Note: As per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य only the ending letter ‘त्’ of ‘महत्’ is substituted by ‘आ’।

The लौकिक-विग्रहः is as follows –
The derivation of the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘महात्मन्’ is similar to the derivation of the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘महाबाहु’ as shown in answer to question 1 in the following comment – https://avg-sanskrit.org/2015/10/29/दत्तराज्यः-mns/#comment-35681. Except that we need to apply 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः a second time to get
    महा + आत्मन् = महात्मन् as the final compound प्रातिपदिकम्।
The gender of a बहुव्रीहि: compound matches that of which it qualifies. In the present example महात्मनः is qualifying पार्थस्य। Hence we assign the masculine gender to the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘महात्मन्’। It declines like आत्मन्-शब्द:।

    3. Which word in the verses is composed using the वार्तिकम् (under 3-2-178 अन्येभ्योऽपि दृश्यते) क्विब्वचिप्रच्छ्यायतस्तुकटप्रुजुश्रीणां दीर्घोऽसम्प्रसारणं च?
    Answer: The word श्रीः (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ’श्री’, प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) is composed by using the वार्तिकम् (under 3-2-178 अन्येभ्योऽपि दृश्यते) क्विब्वचिप्रच्छ्यायतस्तुकटप्रुजुश्रीणां दीर्घोऽसम्प्रसारणं च।
(The Goddess Lakṣmī) who naturally/habitually resorts to Hari (Lord Viṣṇu.)

श्रि + क्विँप् | By वार्तिकम् (under 3-2-178 अन्येभ्योऽपि दृश्यते) क्विब्वचिप्रच्‍छ्यायतस्‍तुकटप्रुजुश्रीणां दीर्घोऽसम्‍प्रसारणं च – To denote an agent who performs an action because of his nature/habit or sense of duty or skill, the affix ‘क्विँप्’ may be used following any one of the verbal roots listed below. Simultaneously there is an elongation of the (vowel contained in) the verbal root and there is an absence of संप्रसारणम् (if applicable.)
३८) when preceded by ‘आयत’
११११) when preceded by ‘कट’
दीर्घादेश: is done by the same वार्तिकम् – क्विब्वचिप्रच्‍छ्यायतस्‍तुकटप्रुजुश्रीणां दीर्घोऽसम्‍प्रसारणं च। Now ‘श्री’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।

    4. Can you spot the affix ‘ट’ in the commentary?
Answer: The affix ‘ट’ occurs in the commentary in the form रोमाञ्चकरम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘रोमाञ्चकर’, पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।

(The conversation) which causes horripilation
    ‘कर’ is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे, # ८. १०).
The (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् ’रोमाञ्चकर’ is derived as follows:
    रोमाञ्च + ङस् + कृ + ट । By 3-2-20 कृञो हेतुताच्छील्यानुलोम्येषु – When in composition with a पदम् which denotes the object (of the action), the verbal root √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे, # ८. १०) may take the affix ‘ट’ to express the meaning of a cause or habitual/natural action or amiability (going with the grain.)
Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-2-20 कृञो हेतुताच्छील्यानुलोम्येषु, the term कर्मणि (which comes as अनुवृत्ति: from the सूत्रम् 3-2-1 कर्मण्यण्) ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘रोमाञ्च ङस्’ (which is the object (कर्म-पदम्) of the action करोति) gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
Note: The affix ‘ङस्’ is used here as per 2-3-65 कर्तृकर्मणोः कृति।
We form a compound between ‘रोमाञ्च ङस्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘कर’ by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्।
In the compound, ‘रोमाञ्च ङस्’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌। Note: Here ‘रोमाञ्च ङस्’ is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ् (which prescribes the compounding) the term उपपदम् ends in the nominative case.
    ‘रोमाञ्च ङस् + कर’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। this allows 2-4-71 to apply below.
By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘रोमाञ्चकर’ is an adjective. Here it is qualifying the masculine noun ‘संवाद’। Therefore it is used in the masculine gender. It declines like राम-शब्दः।

    5. What kind of compound is सपुत्र: used in the commentary?
    ii.
    iii.
    iv.
    Answer: The compound सपुत्र: (प्रातिपदिकम् ’सपुत्र’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) is a बहुव्रीहि:।

    लौकिक-विग्रह: is –
(You) along with sons (surrender to Śrī Kṛṣṇa.)
Note: The third case affix used in पुत्रै: is as per the सूत्रम् 2-3-19 सहयुक्तेऽप्रधाने।
The derivation of the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सपुत्र’ is similar to the derivation of the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ’सार्जुन’ as shown in the following post – https://avg-sanskrit.org/2015/12/07/सार्जुनः-mns
Except that step 5 is not relevant since the सूत्रम् 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः has no application here.

The gender of a बहुव्रीहि: compound matches that of which it qualifies. In the present example, सपुत्रः is qualifying धृतराष्ट्रः (त्वम्) and hence is used in the masculine gender. It declines like राम-शब्द:।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The sacred conversation between Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna should be studied by everyone.”

    Easy questions:
    1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the वृद्धि: substitution in the form अश्रौषम्?
Answer: The वृद्धि: substitution in the from अश्रौषम् is prescribed by the सूत्रम् 7-2-1 सिचि वृद्धिः परस्मैपदेषु – (The ending letter of) a base (अङ्गम्) which ends in a इक् letter takes the वृद्धि: substitute when followed by the affix सिँच् which is in turn followed by a परस्मैपदम् affix.

Please see the answer to question 1 in the following comment for the derivation of the form

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-110 अत उत्‌ सार्वधातुके been used in the commentary?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-110 अत उत् सार्वधातुके has been used for the substitution ‘उ’ in the form कुरु derived from the verbal root √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८. १०).

Please see the answer to question 5 in the following comment for the derivation of the form कुरु – https://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/10/19/विधिकरीः-fap/#comment-5614
