Today we will look at the form नमस्यामः 3Ap-लँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 10.24.37.

Gita Press translation – Along with the people of Vraja, Śrī Kṛṣṇa Himself offered His greetings to that (other) Self of His, saying, “Oh! look here, appearing in a visible form this mountain has shown grace to us (36). Taking any form at will this deity actually kills such mortals as dwelling in the forest show disrespect to him. (Hence) for our own welfare as well as that of the bovine race we bow to him.” (37)

First we derive the नाम-धातुः “नमस्य” from the अव्ययम् “नमस्” as follows:

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः – The feminine affix आप् and सुँप् affixes that are prescribed after a अव्ययम् take the लुक् elision.

By 3-1-19 नमोवरिवश्चित्रङः क्यच् – The affix क्यच् is employed after the words “नमस्”, “वरिवस्” and “चित्रङ्” when they end in the accusative case and denote the object of “making/doing” – specifically पूजायाम् (in the sense of worship) with “नमस्”, परिचर्यायाम् (in the sense of honor/service) with “वरिवस्” and आश्चर्ये (in the sense of wonder) with “चित्रङ्”।
Note: In the optional case when the affix क्यच् is not used, a sentence (वाक्यम्) may be used to convey the same meaning.

Note: “नमस्” does not get the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् because of the नियम-सूत्रम् (limiting rule) 1-4-15 नः क्ये – When the affix क्यच् or क्यङ् follows, only a term ending in a नकारः gets the designation पदम्। Therefore 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः cannot apply.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “मस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent.

By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे

By 7-3-101 अतो दीर्घो यञि – The ending अकार: of a अङ्गम् is elongated if it is followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: beginning with a letter of the यञ्-प्रत्याहार:।

  1. 1. Where has the नाम-धातुः “नमस्य” been used in a तिङन्तं पदम् in the गीता?
Answer: The नाम-धातुः “नमस्य” has been used in a तिङन्तं पदम् in the form नमस्यन्ति in the following verse:

Derivation of the नाम-धातुः “नमस्य” is in the post.
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे (applied twice.)

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 1-4-15 नः क्ये the काशिका says नान्तमेव क्ये परतः पदसञ्ज्ञं भवति नान्यत्। Please explain.
    Answer: The form वाच्यति (लँट्, कर्तरि, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्) is derived from the नाम-धातुः “वाच्य”।

The नाम-धातुः “वाच्य” is derived from the प्रातिपदिकम् “वाच्” as follows:
Now “वाच्” does not get पद-सञ्ज्ञा because 1-4-15 नः क्ये limits 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् here. Therefore 8-2-30 चोः कुः cannot apply. As per 1-4-15 नः क्ये – When the affix क्यच् or क्यङ् follows, only a term ending in a नकारः gets the designation पदम्। This is what is explained by the statement

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।

    3. In the verses where has the affix “सिँच्” taken the लुक् elision?
    Answer: The affix ‘सिँच्’ has taken the लुक् elision in the form व्यधात् derived from √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके ३.

By 3-2-110 लुङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च।
By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि।
By 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्।
By 2-4-77 गातिस्थाघुपाभूभ्यः सिचः परस्मैपदेषु, when followed by a परस्मैपद-प्रत्यय:, the affix ‘सिँच्’ takes the लुक् elision if preceded by √गा (the substitute ‘गा’ which comes in place of इण् गतौ २. ४० by 2-4-45 इणो गा लुङि) or √स्था (ष्ठा गतिनिवृत्तौ) or any verbal root which has the घु-सञ्ज्ञा (ref. ११) has the घु-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-20 दाधा घ्वदाप्।
Note: 7-3-96 अस्तिसिचोऽपृक्ते does not apply here, because it requires the affix सिँच् to be actually present. Here the affix सिँच् has taken the लुक् elision, hence 7-3-96 does not apply.
By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः।

    ‘वि’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    4. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-1-19 नमोवरिवश्चित्रङः क्यच् (used in step 3) the तत्त्वबोधिनी says चित्रङः क्यज्विधानमीत्वार्थं ङित्करणं तु तङर्थम्। Please explain.
Answer: पाणिनिः has used ङकारः as a इत् in the form “चित्रङ्”। Based on this इत् letter 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम् applies. But the question arises – why not just include “चित्रङ्” in the सूत्रम् 3-1-17 शब्दवैरकलहाभ्रकण्वमेघेभ्यः करणे itself? The सूत्रम् 3-1-17 prescribes the affix “क्यङ्”। Since “क्यङ्” already is a ङित्, there would have been no need to make “चित्रङ्” a ङित्। But then we would not get the desired form चित्रीयते because the ईकारादेशः by 7-4-33 क्यचि च only comes when the affix “क्यच्” follows. Hence पाणिनिः has put “चित्रङ्” in the सूत्रम् 3-1-19 नमोवरिवश्चित्रङः क्यच् (not 3-1-17). This is what is explained by

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“We worship the cow because all the gods reside in her body.” Use the combination of the अव्यये “यत: + हि = यतो हि” for “because”.

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
    “Your behavior surprises me.”

    Easy Questions:

    1. In the verses can you spot a सन्धिः which is आर्षः (irregular – not according to the rules of grammar)?
    Answer: i) A सन्धिः which is आर्षः can be seen in चक्रेऽऽत्मना। The grammatically correct सन्धिः is चक्रे + आत्मना = चक्र आत्मना।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
By 8-3-19 लोपः शाकल्यस्य। After this 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः cannot apply because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्।

Note: There is a special सूत्रम् 6-4-141 मन्त्रेष्वाङ्यादेरात्मनः which provides for the deletion of the initial आकारः of the अङ्गम् “आत्मन्” when the अङ्गम् is followed by the instrumental singular affix “आङ् (टा)”। But this सूत्रम् only applies in the Vedas (मन्त्रेषु।) It has been used here irregularly.

    ii) The absence of सन्धिः in शर्मणे आत्मनः is also आर्षः। The grammatically correct सन्धिः is शर्मणे + आत्मनः = शर्मण आत्मनः।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
By 8-3-19 लोपः शाकल्यस्य। After this 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः cannot apply because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्।

    2. The word गवाम् (षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्) is derived from which प्रातिपदिकम्?
Answer: The word गवाम् is derived from the स्त्रीलिङ्ग/पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “गो”
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकार: of “आम्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
