स्रियाः fGs

Today we will look at the form स्त्रियाः from श्रीमद्भागवतम् SB 10-60-38

Gita Press translation "Indeed You are the embodiment of every (recognized) object of human pursuit, a personification of absolute joy, seeking which the wise give up everything. Their contact with You is most deserved, but no so of the man and woman who are attached one to the other and therefore subject to pleasure and pain."

‘स्त्री’ gets प्रातिपदिकसंज्ञा by 1-2-45 अर्थवदधातुरप्रत्ययः प्रातिपदिकम्. The विवक्षा here is षष्ठी-एकवचनम्. 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप् mandates the प्रत्ययाः सुँ, औ, जस् etc. after the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘स्त्री’.

By 7-3-112 आण्नद्याः , the ङित् affixes that follow an अङ्गम् ending in a term having the नदी-सञ्ज्ञा, get the आट् augment.

टकार-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् , 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः and ङकार-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः.

By 6-1-90 आटश्च, वृद्धिः letter is a single replacement when आट् is followed by a vowel.

By 6-4-79 स्त्रियाः ,there is a substitution of इयँङ् in place of the term स्त्री when followed by a प्रत्यय: beginning with a vowel.

Questions:

1. In the व्याकरण-शास्त्रम् (as composed by पाणिनि:) does “गङ्गा” or “यमुना” get the नदी-सञ्ज्ञा ?

2. Why did पाणिनि: have to compose 6-4-79 स्त्रियाः ? Why not just use 6-4-77 अचि श्नुधातुभ्रुवां य्वोरियङुवङौ ?

3. In step 5, the इयँङ्-आदेश: replaced only the ending letter (ईकार:) of the अङ्गम् “स्त्री” as per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-53 ङिच्च . This सूत्रम् 1-1-53 ङिच्च is an अपवाद: for which सूत्रम् which in turn is an अपवाद: for which सूत्रम् ?

4. The सूत्रम् 6-4-79 स्त्रियाः is used on itself. How is that?

5. Where is the प्रातिपदिकम् “स्त्री” used in the गीता ? In which of those places is the सूत्रम् 6-4-79 स्त्रियाः used?

6. Which word in the verse translates to “contact” ?

7. In the absence of the सूत्रम् 6-4-79 स्त्रियाः which rule would have applied to give which (undesired) form?

Easy questions:

1. By which सूत्रम् do we get सुखदुःखिनोस् + न = सुखदुःखिनोर्न ?

2. From where does the अनुवृत्ति: of “ङिति” come into 7-3-112 आण्नद्याः ?

Advanced question:

1. Why did पाणिनि: compose 6-4-79 स्त्रियाः as a separate rule (and not combine with 6-4-77 अचि श्नुधातुभ्रुवां य्वोरियङुवङौ)? In answer, the काशिका says “पृथग्योगकरणम् उत्तरार्थम्।” And the न्यास: commentary gives further details “‘वाऽम्शसोः’ ६।४।८० इत्यत्र स्त्रीशब्दस्यैव विकल्पो यथा स्यात्, धातुभ्रुवोर्मा भूदित्येवमर्थं पृथग्योगकरणम्॥” Please explain.

  1. Questions:
    1. In the व्याकरण-शास्त्रम् (as composed by पाणिनि:) does “गङ्गा” or “यमुना” get the नदी-सञ्ज्ञा ?

A term ending in long ई or long ऊ gets the संज्ञा “नदी” if it is used exclusively in the feminine gender.)
Hence, “गङ्गा” or “यमुना” does not get the नदी-सञ्ज्ञा because they both end in an आकार: .

The above saying (सुभाषितम्) states that “पाणिनि: did not regard ‘गङ्गा’ or ‘यमुना’ as “नदी”, (but on the other hand) regarded ‘स्थली’ (land) as “नदी.” (This goes to show that) A master has independence to do whatever he likes!”

    2. Why did पाणिनि: have to compose 6-4-79 स्त्रियाः ? Why not just use 6-4-77 अचि श्नुधातुभ्रुवां य्वोरियङुवङौ ?

The conditions required for 6-4-77 अचि श्नुधातुभ्रुवां य्वोरियङुवङौ to apply are as follows:

If a प्रत्यय: beginning with an अच् (vowel) follows, then the (ending letter of the) अङ्गम् is replaced by इयँङ्/उवँङ् in the following three cases –
    (1) If the अङ्गम् ends in the श्नु-प्रत्यय: or
    (2) If the अङ्गम् ends in the इवर्ण: or उवर्ण: of a धातु: or
    (3) If the अङ्गम् is the word “भ्रू”.

The ending ईकार: of the term “स्त्री” is not coming from a धातु:. (It comes from the स्त्री-प्रत्यय: “ङीप्”) So 6-4-77 would not have applied in our case.

    1-1-53 ङिच्च is an अपवाद: for 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य
    1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य is an अपवाद: for 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य

    4. The सूत्रम् 6-4-79 स्त्रियाः is used on itself. How is that?

The term “स्त्रियाः” in 6-4-79 is षष्ठी-एकवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “स्त्री” (षष्ठी विभक्तिः is used here to indicate that the operation takes place on स्त्री-शब्दः by 1-1-49 षष्ठी स्थानेयोगा ).
So to derive the form स्त्रियाः in the सूत्रम् “6-4-79 स्त्रियाः” , we have to use 6-4-79 itself.

    5. Where is the प्रातिपदिकम् “स्त्री” used in the गीता ? In which of those places is the सूत्रम् 6-4-79 स्त्रियाः used?

    The विवक्षा here is सप्तमी-बहुवचनम्
    The derivation is as follows:
    स्त्री + सुप् = स्त्री + सु (1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् , 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः)
    = स्त्रीषु ( 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययोः)
(The other occurrence has the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कुलस्त्री’ and the विवक्षा is प्रथमा-बहुवचनम् and the derivation is the same as that for स्त्री-शब्दः given below) .

    The विवक्षा is प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्

    6. Which word in the verse translates to “contact” ?

    7. In the absence of the सूत्रम् 6-4-79 स्त्रियाः which rule would have applied to give which (undesired) form?
In the absence of the सूत्रम् 6-4-79 स्त्रियाः, after step 4 स्त्री + आस् we could have applied 6-1-77 इको यणचि to give the undesired result

    Easy questions:
    1. By which सूत्रम् do we get सुखदुःखिनोस् + न = सुखदुःखिनोर्न ?

    2. From where does the अनुवृत्ति: of “ङिति” come into 7-3-112 आण्नद्याः ?
    From 7-3-111 घेर्ङिति

    Advanced question:

    1. Why did पाणिनि: compose 6-4-79 स्त्रियाः as a separate rule (and not combine with 6-4-77 अचि श्नुधातुभ्रुवां य्वोरियङुवङौ)? In answer, the काशिका says “पृथग्योगकरणम् उत्तरार्थम्।” And the न्यास: commentary gives further details “‘वाऽम्शसोः’ ६।४।८० इत्यत्र स्त्रीशब्दस्यैव विकल्पो यथा स्यात्, धातुभ्रुवोर्मा भूदित्येवमर्थं पृथग्योगकरणम्॥” Please explain.

Ans: The reason stated by काशिका for having a separate rule is “पृथग्योगकरणम् उत्तरार्थम्।”, which means “In order to facilitate अनुवृत्ति: into the next rule (which is 6-4-80 वाऽम्शसोः).”
Which the न्यास: commentary clarifies as follows: The सूत्रम् “6-4-80 वाऽम्शसोः” is meant for arriving at optional forms only for the स्त्री-शब्दः, and should not be applied to the प्रातिपदिकानि that are formed from a धातुः or the भ्रू-शब्दः. (If पाणिनि: had combined 6-4-77 and 6-4-79 then the अनुवृत्ति: of “धातु” and “भ्रू” would also have come into 6-4-80. In order to avoid this undesirable consequence, पाणिनि: split 6-4-79 as a separate rule and now only the अनुवृत्ति: of “स्त्रियाः” comes into 6-4-80.)
