Gita Press translation – Thus remaining free from passion while (lying) in bed, sitting, moving about, bathing, seeing, touching, smelling, eating and hearing etc., and allowing the (three) Guṇas (in the form of the senses) to enjoy the various objects of the senses, the enlightened soul does not get bound (by such actions) like the ignorant man. Though continuing in his psycho-physical organism (which is a modification of Prakṛti) he remains unattached to it like the sky, the sun (which remains unattached to the water in which it is reflected) or the wind (which remains unattached even though blowing everywhere) (11-12). With (all) his doubts resolved by (the sword of) his penetrating intellect whetted by (all-round) detachment he turns away from the sense of diversity, even as one who has woke up from a dream turns away from it (13).

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘स्वप्न’ is derived from the verbal root √स्वप् (ञिष्वपँ शये २. ६३).

By 3-3-91 स्वपो नन् – Following the verbal root √स्वप् (ञिष्वपँ शये २. ६३) the affix ‘नन्’ may be used to denote either (i) the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state or (ii) any कारक: except the agent of the action, provided the word so derived is a proper name.

Note: The affix नन् is prohibited from taking the augment इट् by 7-2-8 नेड् वशि कृति। In addition, 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ also blocks the augment इट् here because √स्वप् (ञिष्वपँ शये २. ६३) is अनुदात्तोपदश:।

‘स्वप्न’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

‘स्वप्न’ is a पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम्। The विवक्षा is पञ्चमी-एकवचनम्

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌

By 7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः – Following a अङ्गम् ending in a अकार:, the affixes ‘टा’, ‘ङसिँ’ and ‘ङस्’ are replaced respectively by ‘इन’, ‘आत्’ and ‘स्य’। As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य the entire affix ‘ङसिँ’ is replaced by ‘आत्’। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending तकार: of ‘आत्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

  1. 1. Where has the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘स्वप्न’ been used in Chapter Eighteen of the गीता?
Answer: The पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘स्वप्न’ been used in the following verse of the गीता –

    The विवक्षा is द्वितीया-एकवचनम्।

    2. Can you recall another सूत्रम् (besides 3-3-91 स्वपो नन्) in which पाणिनि: specifically mentions the verbal root √स्वप् (ञिष्वपँ शये २.
    Answer: पाणिनि: mentions the verbal root √स्वप् (ञिष्वपँ शये २. ६३) in the following two सूत्रे also –

    i) 1-2-8 रुदविदमुषग्रहिस्वपिप्रच्छः सँश्च – The affix ‘क्त्वा’ as well as ‘सन्’ is considered to be a कित् (having the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) when it follows the verbal root √रुद् (रुदिँर् अश्रुविमोचने २.

६३) and also the nine verbal roots beginning with √यज् (यजँ देवपूजासङ्गतिकरणदानेषु १. ११५७) take सम्प्रसारणम् (ref. 1-1-45) when followed by an affix which is a कित्।

    3. Can you spot affix तृच् in the verses?
Answer: The affix तृच् has been used in the form सविता (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सवितृ’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

    The कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सवितृ’ is derived from the verbal root √सू (षू प्रेरणे ६. १४४) as follows –

The beginning letter ‘ष्’ of the verbal root ‘षू’ is replaced by the letter ‘स्’ as per 6-1-64 धात्वादेः षः सः।
By 3-1-133 ण्वुल्तृचौ – The affixes ‘ण्वुल्’ and ‘तृच्’ may be used after a verbal root. Note: As per 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌, these affixes are used in the sense of the agent of the action.
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। The affix ‘सुँ’ has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य।
By 7-1-94 ऋदुशनस्पुरुदंसोऽनेहसां च, 1-1-53 ङिच्च।
By 6-4-11 अप्तृन्तृच्स्वसृनप्तृनेष्टृत्वष्टृक्षत्तृहोतृपोतृप्रशास्तॄणाम्।
Now ‘सवितान्’ gets पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।
By 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य।

    4. What would be an alternate form for विद्वान्?

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-1-26 हेतुमति च been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-1-26 हेतुमति च has been used in the form आदयन् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आदयत्’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आदयत्’ is derived from the causative form of the verbal root √अद् (अदँ भक्षणे २. १) as follows –

By 3-1-26 हेतुमति च – The affix ‘णिच्’ is used after a verbal root, when the operation of a causer – such as the operation of directing – is to be expressed.
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे। ‘आदयत्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

The derivation of the form आदयन् from the प्रातिपादिकम् ‘आदयत्’ is similar to the derivation of विदन् from the प्रातिपादिकम् ‘विदत्’ shown in answer to question 2 in the following comment –
    http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/12/31/विद्वान्-mns/#comment-12135

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I saw you in a dream.” Use लुँङ् to express the past tense.

    Easy questions:

    1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the elision of the letter ‘न्’ in the form बध्यते?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-24 अनिदितां हल उपधायाः क्ङिति prescribes the elision of the letter ‘न्’ in the form बध्यते derived from the verbal root √बन्ध् (क्रयादि-गणः, बन्धँ बन्धने, धातु-पाठः # ९. ४४).

Please see answer to question 1 in the following comment for derivation of the form

    2. Can you spot the affix श्नम् in the commentary?
Answer: The affix श्नम् is used in the form भुञ्जीत derived from the verbal root √भुज् (भुजँ पालनाभ्यवहारयोः ७.

By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-66 भुजोऽनवने। Note: As per 1-3-66 भुजोऽनवने – The root √भुज् (भुजँ पालनाभ्यवहारयोः # ७. १७) takes आत्मनेपदम् affixes except when used in the sense of protecting.
Note: In the augment सीयुट्, the letter ‘उ’ before the letter ‘ट्’ is उच्चारणार्थ: – for pronunciation only.
By 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्त्यस्य।
By 3-1-78 रुधादिभ्यः श्नम् – The affix श्नम् is placed after the verbal roots belonging to the रुधादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुकम् affix that is used signifying the agent. ‘श्नम्’ is a मित् (has the letter ‘म्’ as a इत्)। Hence as per 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात् परः, it is placed after the last vowel (the letter ‘उ’) of the अङ्गम् ‘भुज्’।
By 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः । Note: Since the सार्वधातुकम् affix ‘ईत’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्), by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। This allows 6-4-111 to apply.
By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि।
