Gita Press translation “(Granted that the relation of master and servant subsisting between a ruler and his subjects is not permanent or unchangeable) a king is (nevertheless for the time being) the ruler and protector of the people. He who is a servant (of the Lord, that is, he who does his duty as a piece of service to the Lord) does not grind what is already ground (undertake an unprofitable business), for (although he may not be able to rid a dunce of his stupidity by upbraiding him for his remissness, he thereby carries out the Lord’s behests and) by offering worship to the Lord in the shape of performing his duty he is able to get rid of his stock of sins.(23) Therefore, may you be pleased, O friend of the afflicted, to cast a kindly look on me, who have slighted the most holy (like you) through vanity arising from consciousness of my being a ruler of men, so that I may (be able to) get rid of the sin incurred by showing disrespect to pious souls.(24)”

कृषीष्ट is derived from the धातुः √कृ (तनादि-गणः, डुकृञ् करणे, धातु-पाठः # ८. १०)

The “डु” at the beginning of this धातुः gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-5 आदिर्ञिटुडवः। The ञकारः at the end gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्। Both take लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

Since √कृ has ञकारः as इत् in the धातु-पाठः, as per 1-3-72 स्वरितञितः कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले it is उभयपदी। In this verse, it has taken a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यय:।

3-3-173 आशिषि लिङ्लोटौ, the affixes लिँङ् and लोँट् occur after a verbal root when used in the sense of benediction.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “त” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-4-102 लिङस्सीयुट्, the affixes of लिँङ् get “सीयुट्” as the augment. As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the “सीयुट्”-आगमः joins at the beginning of the प्रत्यय:।

The उकार: in “सीयुट्” is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थम्)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

By 3-4-107 सुट् तिथोः, a तकार: or थकार: belonging to a लिँङ् affix takes the augment सुट्। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the “सुट्”-आगमः joins at the beginning of the तकार:।

The उकार: in “सुट्” is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थम्)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

By 6-1-66 लोपो व्‍योर्वलि, a वकारः or a यकारः is elided when it is followed by a letter of the वल्-प्रत्याहारः।

Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the “इट्”-आगम: (for the प्रत्यय: “सीस्त”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः

Note: By 1-2-12 उश्च, when used in आत्मनेपदम्, the affix लिँङ् or सिँच् is considered to be a कित् (as having ककार: as a इत्) if the following conditions are satisfied:
i. The affix (लिँङ् or सिँच्) begins with a झल् letter and
ii. There is a ऋवर्ण: (ऋकार:/ॠकार:) prior to the affix (लिँङ् or सिँच्)।

Hence as per 1-2-12 उश्च, the affix “सीस्त” is a कित् here. This enables 1-1-5 ग्क्ङिति च to stop 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः

By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:, the letter “स्” is replaced by the cerebral “ष्” when preceded either by a letter of the इण्-प्रत्याहार: or a letter of the क-वर्ग: (“क्”, “ख्”, “ग्”, “घ्”, “ङ्”)। This substitution only takes place if the “स्” is an आदेश: (substitute) or part of a प्रत्यय: (affix.) (This सूत्रम् is applied twice here.)

By 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः

Questions:

1. Where has the “सीयुट्”-आगम: (used in step 4 of the example) been used in Chapter Six of the गीता?

2. What is the प्रातिपदिकम् used in the word “उ:” in the सूत्रम् 1-2-12 उश्च (used in step 8)?

3. Can you spot a “श्लु” elision in the verses?

4. Why doesn’t the सूत्रम् 7-1-100 ॠत इद्धातोः apply in the form तरिष्यामि used in the commentary?

5. Which सूत्रम् is used to bring in the “श्नम्”-प्रत्यय: in the form पिनष्टि used in the verses?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“May I do that which would please (my) teacher.” or “I wish I do that which would please (my) teacher.” Use (a विधिलिँङ् form of) √रुच् (रुचँ दीप्तावभिप्रीतौ च १. ८४७) for “to please.” Use चतुर्थी विभक्ति: with “teacher.” Use the pronouns “यद्” and “तद्”।

Easy questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-1-111 ऋत उत्‌ been used in the commentary?

2. Derive the form भवान् (पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) from the सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् “भवत्”। Note: “भवत्” ends in the प्रत्यय: “डवतुँ”।

  1. Questions:

    1. Where has the “सीयुट्”-आगम: (used in step 4 of the example) been used in Chapter Six of the गीता?
Answer: The “सीयुट्”-आगम: has been used in the form वर्तेत in verse 6 and in the form आसीत in verse 14 of Chapter 6.

    वर्तेत is derived from the धातुः √वृत् (वृतुँ वर्तने, धातु-पाठः १.
By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ्।

    2. What is the प्रातिपदिकम् used in the word “उ:” in the सूत्रम् 1-2-12 उश्च (used in step 8)?
    Answer: उः is the पञ्चमी-एकवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “ऋ”
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।

By 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।

    3. Can you spot a “श्लु” elision in the verses?
Answer: “श्लु” elision has happened in the derivation of the form विजहाति derived from the धातुः √हा (ओँहाक् त्यागे, धातु-पाठः #३.९)।
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 2-4-75 जुहोत्यादिभ्यः श्लुः, the “शप्”-प्रत्यय: following the verbal roots “हु” etc. gets “श्लु” (elision).
By 6-1-10 श्लौ।
By 7-4-62 कुहोश्चुः, 1-1-50 स्थानेऽन्तरतमः।
By 7-4-59 ह्रस्वः।

    “वि” is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    4. Why doesn’t the सूत्रम् 7-1-100 ॠत इद्धातोः apply in the form तरिष्यामि used in the commentary?
    Answer: The form तरिष्यामि is derived from √तॄ (तॄ प्लवनतरणयोः १.
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
Note: The सूत्रम् 7-1-100 ॠत इद्धातोः does not apply here (instead of 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः) because the सूत्रम् 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः (which is a later सूत्रम् in the अष्टाध्यायी compared to 7-1-100) gets precedence over 7-1-100 by 1-4-2 विप्रतिषेधे परं कार्यम्। Once 7-3-84 applies there is no scope for 7-1-100 to apply because there is no ॠकार: any more.
By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:।

    5. Which सूत्रम् is used to bring in the “श्नम्”-प्रत्यय: in the form पिनष्टि used in the verses?
Answer: The “श्नम्”-प्रत्यय: in the form पिनष्टि is prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-1-78 रुधादिभ्यः श्नम्।
    पिनष्टि is derived from the धातुः √पिष् (रुधादि-गणः, पिषॢँ सञ्चूर्णने, धातु-पाठः # ७.
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-1-78 रुधादिभ्यः श्नम्, the श्नम्-प्रत्ययः is placed after the verbal roots belonging to the रुधादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः that is used signifying the agent. श्नम् is a मित्। Hence as per 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः, it is placed after the last vowel (इकार:) of the अङ्गम् “पिष्”।
By 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः।

    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-1-111 ऋत उत्‌ been used in the form शास्तुः (प्रातिपदिकम् “शास्तृ”, पुंलिङ्गे, षष्ठी-एकवचनम्)।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “ङस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-111 ऋत उत्‌ – The short उकारः shall be a single substitute in the place of the short ऋकारः and the following short अकारः of the affixes “ङसिँ” or “ङस्”। As per 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः, in the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter (“अ”, “इ”, “उ”) comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a “रँ” (“र्”, “ल्”) letter.
By 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।

    2. Derive the form भवान् (पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) from the सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् “भवत्”। Note: “भवत्” ends in the प्रत्यय: “डवतुँ”।
    Answer:
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। The प्रत्यय: “सुँ” has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य।
By 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः – When the “सुँ” affix which is not सम्बुद्धिः follows, a base that ends in “अतुँ” or a base that ends in an “अस्” which is not of a verbal root, has its penultimate letter elongated.
Note: 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः is actually a later rule, and also an invariable rule (नित्य-कार्यम्) compared to 6-4-14. So as per 1-4-2 विप्रतिषेधे परं कार्यम्, we should apply 7-1-70 before 6-4-14. But if we do that then the mention of “अतु” in 6-4-14 will become useless – it will never find application because then the उपधा will always be a नकार:। So on the basis of वचनसामर्थ्यात् we apply 6-4-14 before 7-1-70.
By 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः।
Note: After this 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य cannot be applied because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्।
