Today we will look at the form भूयास्म 1Ap-आशीर्लिँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 11.21.33.

Gita Press translation “Rooted in Rajas, Sattva and Tamas, they worship gods etc., Indra being the chief of them – who (likewise) take delight in Sattva, Rajas and Tamas – and not so (devotedly) Myself (who stand beyond the three Guṇas). (32) They indulge in the (fond) hope that, having worshipped the gods through sacrifices in their earthly career, they will ascend to heaven and revel (there), and at the end of such enjoyment (in heaven) will be born (again) in the terrestrial region of a high pedigree and be great householders (living in stately mansions). (33)”

भूयास्म is derived from the धातुः √भू (भू सत्तायाम्, भ्वादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #१. १).

In the धातु-पाठः, √भू has no इत् letters. It is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, √भू takes the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √भू can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:।

3-3-173 आशिषि लिङ्लोटौ, the affixes लिँङ् and लोँट् occur after a verbal root when used in the sense of benediction.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “मस्” as the substitute for the लकारः।

by 3-4-99 नित्यं डितः , a उत्तम-पुरुषः affix ending in a सकारः, always gets elided if it is of a लकारः which is ङित्। As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending सकारः takes लोपः ।

By 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च, the परस्मैपदम् affixes of लिँङ् get यासुट् as an augment, and this augment is उदात्तः and a ङित्। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places यासुट् at the beginning of the प्रत्यय:।

The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थम्)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

Note: As per 3-4-116 लिङाशिषि, the affix “यास्त्” has the आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा here. Hence 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ and 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्त्यस्य do not apply. See question 2.

By 3-4-104 किदाशिषि, the augment यासुट् (prescribed by 3-4-103) shall be considered to be a कित् (as having ककार: as a इत्) when it joins a लिँङ् affix used in the sense of benediction. Hence the प्रत्यय: “यास्म” (which contains the augment यासुट्) is a कित् here. This enables 1-1-5 ग्क्ङिति च to prevent 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः from applying.

Questions:

1. Where has 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च (used in step 5 of the example) been used for the last time in the गीता?

2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्त्यस्य (referred to in step 6), the काशिका says – सार्वधातुके इत्येव, क्रियास्ताम्। Please explain.

3. What would have been the final form in this example if the विवक्षा had been विधिलिँङ् (instead of आशीर्लिङ्)?

4. Where has 7-1-5 आत्मनेपदेष्वनतः been used in the verses?

5. Why didn’t the “स्य”-प्रत्यय: take a “इट्”-आगम: (by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः) in the form रंस्यामहे?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“May we be glorious.” or “We wish we become glorious.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “यशस्विन्” for “glorious.”

Easy questions:

1. Can you spot two places in the verses where 8-3-19 लोपः शाकल्यस्य has been used?

2. Consider the following सन्धि-कार्यम् done in the commentary:
By 8-2-39 झलां जशोऽन्ते।
By ?
Which सूत्रम् is used in the last step?

  1. 1. Where has 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च (used in step 5 of the example) been used for the last time in the गीता?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च has been used for the last time in the गीता in verse 71, chapter 18 in the form प्राप्नुयात्।

    आप्नुयात् is derived from the धातुः √आप् (स्वादि-गणः, आपॢँ व्याप्तौ, धातु-पाठः # ५.
By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्च।
The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थम्)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
By 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्त्यस्य।
By 3-1-73 स्वादिभ्यः श्नुः, the श्नु-प्रत्यय: is placed after the verbal roots of the स्वादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent.

    “प्र” is the उपसर्गः (ref 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे।)

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्त्यस्य (referred to in step 6), the काशिका says – सार्वधातुके इत्येव, क्रियास्ताम्। Please explain.
Answer: सार्वधातुके इत्येव means that the rule 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्त्यस्य applies only when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः follows. In the form क्रियास्ताम्, 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्त्यस्य does not apply because the प्रत्ययः following the अङ्गम् does not have the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा। It instead has the आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा।
    The form क्रियास्ताम् is derived from the धातुः √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८.
By 3-3-173 आशिषि लिङ्लोटौ।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्। As per 3-4-116 लिङाशिषि, the affix “तस्” has the आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा here. Hence 3-1-79 तनादिकृञ्भ्य उः does not apply.
“ताम्” also gets आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकार: of “ताम्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थम्)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। As per 3-4-104 किदाशिषि, यासुट् is a कित् here. This allows 1-1-5 ग्क्ङिति च to stop 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
As per 3-4-116 लिङाशिषि, the affix ‘यास्ताम्’ has the आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा here. Hence, as explained above, 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्त्यस्य does not apply.

    3. What would have been the final form in this example if the विवक्षा had been विधिलिँङ् (instead of आशीर्लिङ्)?
Answer: The form would be भवेम
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्।
By 3-4-99 नित्यं ङितः।
The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थम्)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
By 7-2-80 अतो येयः।
By 6-1-66 लोपो व्योर्वलि।
By 6-1-87 आद्‍गुणः।

    4. Where has 7-1-5 आत्मनेपदेष्वनतः been used in the verses?
Answer: 7-1-5 आत्मनेपदेष्वनतः has been used in the form उपासते, derived from the verbal root √आस् (आसँ उपवेशने २.
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
‘झ’ gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्। This allows 3-1-68 to apply below
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।
By 7-1-5 आत्मनेपदेष्वनतः – The झकारः of a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययः gets “अत्” as the replacement when following an अङ्गम् that does not end in अकारः।
Note: Since “अत्” is an आदेश: (substitute) in place of the झकार: of the झ-प्रत्यय: (which has the विभक्ति-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-104 विभक्तिश्च), “अत्” also gets the विभक्ति-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ। Hence 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending तकार: of “अत्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

    5. Why didn’t the “स्य”-प्रत्यय: take a “इट्”-आगम: (by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः) in the form रंस्यामहे?
९८९) is अनुदात्तोपदेशः। Therefore 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः is blocked by 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात् – A “इट्”-आगम: is prohibited for a आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: when it follows a धातु: which in the धातु-पाठ: has only one vowel with a अनुदात्त: accent.

Answer: 8-3-19 लोपः शाकल्यस्य has been used in the following two places –

    The steps are as follows:
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
By 8-3-19 लोपः शाकल्यस्य – In the opinion of the teacher शाकल्यः, the यकारः or वकार: is dropped when it occurs at the end of a पदम् and is preceded by the अवर्णः (अकारः or आकारः) and is followed by a letter of the अश्-प्रत्याहारः। (Note: As a convention, the यकारः is always dropped while the वकार: is never dropped.)
Note: After this 6-1-87 आद्गुणः does not apply because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्।

    2. Consider the following सन्धि-कार्यम् done in the commentary:
By 8-2-39 झलां जशोऽन्ते।
By ?
Which सूत्रम् is used in the last step?
Answer: The सूत्रम् applied in the last step is 8-4-45 यरोऽनुनासिकेऽनुनासिको वा – When a nasal sound follows, then a यर् letter at the end of a पदम् is optionally substituted by a nasal. (Even though the rule is optional, as a convention it is always followed in classical Sanskrit.)
