Gita Press translation – The worshipful goddess said: None other than you would antagonize Him (Lord Śiva), who is unsurpassed in this world, to whom no one is dear or hateful, who is beloved Self of all embodied beings, nay, who is the cause of all and is free from enmity (11). People like you, O Brāhmaṇa, discover faults even in the virtues of others; but there are some pious souls who never do so. The greatest of all are they who are wont to magnify even the most trifling virtues (of others). You, however, have found fault even with such people (12).

“भृत्” is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √भृ (डुभृञ् धारणपोषणयोः, # ३. ६).

The (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् “देहभृत्” is derived as follows:

By the 3-2-76 क्विप् च – (In addition to the affixes mentioned in the सूत्रम् 3-2-74) the affix “क्विँप्” may also be used (following any verbal root with or without the presence of a उपपदम्।)

Note: The term सुपि (which comes as अनुवृत्ति: in to the सूत्रम् 3-2-76 क्विप् च from the सूत्रम् 3-2-4 सुपि स्थः) ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence “देह + ङस्” gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌

Note: The affix “ङस्” is used here as per 2-3-65 कर्तृकर्मणोः कृति – To express the agent or the object (of an action), a nominal stem takes a sixth case affix when the nominal stem is used in conjunction with a term which ends in a कृत् affix. (This is what is called as कृद्योगे षष्ठी)।

By 6-1-67 वेरपृक्तस्य – The वकारः which is अपृक्तः (a single letter प्रत्ययः), takes लोपः। As per 1-2-41 अपृक्त एकाल् प्रत्यय:, here the वकारः has अपृक्त-सञ्ज्ञा। Note: The affix क्विँप् is a कित्। This enables 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to stop 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।

By 6-1-71 ह्रस्वस्य पिति कृति तुक् – When followed by a कृत् affix which is a पित् (has पकारः as a इत्), a short vowel takes the augment “तुँक्”। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the “तुँक्”-आगम: joins after the ऋकारः।

We form a compound between “देह ङस्” (which is the उपपदम्) and “भृत्” by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ् – A सुबन्तम् (term ending in a सुँप् affix) having the designation “उपपद” (in this case “देह ङस्”) invariably compounds with a syntactically related term (in this case “भृत्”) as long as the compound does not end in a तिङ् affix.

In the compound, “देह ङस्” is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation “उपसर्जन” should be placed in the prior position. Note: Here “देह ङस्” is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – A term denoted by a word (in this case “उपपदम्”) ending in a nominative case in a सूत्रम् (in this case 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्) which prescribes a compound gets the designation “उपसर्जन”।
“देह ङस् + भृत्” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of “आम्” from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

  1. 1. Where has देहभृताम् been used in the गीता?
Answer: देहभृताम् been used in the following verse of the गीता –

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-2-76 क्विप् च (used in step 1), the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – ‘सत्सूद्विष..’ Please explain. Hint: The reference is to the
    Answer: The वृत्ति: of the सूत्रम् 3-2-61 सत्सूद्विषद्रुहदुहयुजविदभिदच्छिदजिनीराजामुपसर्गेऽपि क्विप्‌ says – एभ्य: क्विप् स्यादुपसर्गे सत्यसति च सुप्युपपदे । The affix ‘क्विँप्’ may be used following any one of the verbal roots listed below, as long as there is composition with a सुबन्तं पदम् (a पदम् which ends in a सुँप् affix) which may or may not be a उपसर्ग: (ref. 1-4-59) –
But all the forms that are derived by using 3-2-61 may also be derived by the general rule 3-2-76 क्विप् च। Then the question comes as to why has पाणिनि: composed 3-2-61? In answer to this the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says that the सूत्रम् 3-2-61 is simply a प्रपञ्च: (amplification/elaboration) of the सूत्रम् 3-2-76.

    3. Where has the गणसूत्रम् (in the चुरादि-गणः of the धातु-पाठः) – तत्करोति तदाचष्टे been used in the verses?
Answer: The गणसूत्रम् – तत्करोति तदाचष्टे has been used in the form प्रतीपयेत्।

By the गणसूत्रम् – प्रातिपदिकाद् धात्वर्थे बहुलमिष्ठवच्च along with गणसूत्रम् – तत्करोति तदाचष्टे – The affix णिच् is used in the sense of “he/she does/makes or tells/describes that.”
Note: The affix णिच् behaves इष्ठवत् (by the गणसूत्रम् – प्रातिपदिकाद् धात्वर्थे बहुलमिष्ठवच्च।) This allows the अङ्गम् “प्रतीप” to get the भ-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-18 यचि भम्। The भ-सञ्ज्ञा is required for the application of 6-4-148 in the next step.
By 6-4-148 यस्येति च। Note: “इष्ठन्” is a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः। This allows 6-4-148 to apply.

By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ।
By 3-4-100 इतश्च।
The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थम्)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ ।
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
By 7-2-80 अतो येयः।
By 6-1-66 लोपो व्योर्वलि।
By 6-1-87 आद्गुणः।

    4. In the commentary, can you spot a term from the कण्ड्वादि-गण:?
    Answer: The verbal root √असु (असु उपतापे, कण्ड्वादि-गणः) used in the form असूयकाः (पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्)। The धातुः ‘असूय’ is derived as follows –
By 3-1-27 कण्ड्वादिभ्यो यक् – The affix यक् is always used after the verbal roots in the कण्ड्वादि-गणः (group of terms headed by “कण्डूञ्”) with no change in their meaning.
The terms in the कण्ड्वादि-गणः are considered to be verbal roots as well as nominal stems. When they are used as verbal roots 3-1-27 applies.
    Note: यक् is a कित्।
By 7-4-25 अकृत्सार्वधातुकयोर्दीर्घः।

The कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘असूयक’ is derived as follows:
By 3-1-133 ण्वुल्तृचौ। Note: As per 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌, the affixes “ण्वुल्” and “तृच्” are used in the sense of the agent of the action. Hence the meaning of असूयक: is असूयति – one who is envious.
By 7-1-1 युवोरनाकौ।
By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः।

Note: ‘असूयक’ may also be derived using the affix ‘वुञ्’ prescribed by 3-2-146 निन्दहिंसक्लिशखादविनाशपरिक्षिपपरिरटपरिवादिव्याभाषासूयो वुञ् which occurs in the अधिकार: of 3-2-134 आ क्वेस्तच्छीलतद्धर्मतत्साधुकारिषु। In this case असूयक: means असूयति तच्छीलः – one who is habitually envious. The derivation is similar to the one shown above.

    5. In which compound in the commentary has the कृत् affix ‘क’ been used?
Answer: The affix ‘क’ has been used in derivation of the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘मध्यस्थ’।
The derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘मध्यस्थ’ is similar to that of ‘गजस्थ’ as shown in this post – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/10/12/गजस्थस्य-mgs/

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Happiness as well as sorrow is experienced by all embodied beings.” Use the verbal root √भू (भू सत्तायाम् १. १) with the उपसर्ग: “अनु” for “to experience.”

    Easy questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-109 जसि च been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-109 जसि च has been used in the forms साधवः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘साधु’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्) and बहुलीकरिष्णवः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘बहुलीकरिष्णु’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्)।
The derivation is similar to that of उरवः shown in the answer to easy question 1 in the following comment –
    http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/09/24/गायकाः-mnp/#comment-4582

    2. In the commentary, can you spot a प्रातिपदिकम् which is used only in the dual number?
Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘द्वि’ used in the form द्वाभ्याम् is used only in the dual number.

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकार: of “भ्याम्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 7-2-102 त्यदादीनाम:, 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य।
By 7-3-102 सुपि च।
