महीयते 3As-लँट्

Today we will look at the form महीयते 3As-लँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 6.2.48.

य एवं परमं गुह्यमितिहासमघापहम् । शृणुयाच्छ्रद्धया युक्तो यश्च भक्त्यानुकीर्तयेत् ॥ ६-२-४७ ॥
न वै स नरकं याति नेक्षितो यमकिङ्करैः । यद्यप्यमङ्गलो मर्त्यो विष्णुलोके महीयते ॥ ६-२-४८ ॥

श्रीधर-स्वामि-टीका –
न चेक्षितो भवति ॥ ४८ ॥

Gita Press translation – He who, full of reverence hears this legend, which is a most profound secret (of the scriptures) and is capable of destroying (all) one’s sins, as well as he who repeats it with devotion (after hearing it) never goes to hell nor dare the servants of Yama look at him. However accursed (sinful) he may have been, such a mortal is adored (hereafter) in Vaikuṇṭha (the realm of Lord Viṣṇu) (47-48).

महीयते is derived from the verbal root √मही (महीङ् पूजायाम्, कण्ड्वादि-गणः)। The ङकारः at the end of “महीङ्” gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

First we derive the धातुः “महीय” as follows:

(1) मही + यक् । By 3-1-27 कण्ड्वादिभ्यो यक् – The affix यक् is always used after the verbal roots in the कण्ड्वादि-गणः (group of terms headed by “कण्डूञ्”) with no change in their meaning. Note: The terms in the कण्ड्वादि-गणः are considered to be verbal roots as well as nominal stems. When they are used as verbal roots 3-1-27 applies.
Note: यक् is a कित्। Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः

(2) मही + य । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

Now “महीय” gets धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः

The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोगः, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्

(3) महीय + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

(4) महीय + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(5) महीय + त । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम्

(6) महीय + ते । By 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे, the टि-भागः of a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययः which substitutes a टित्-लकारः (a लकार: which has टकार: as a इत्), gets एकारः as the replacement.

(7) महीय + शप् + ते । By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent.

(8) महीय + अ + ते । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते , 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(9) महीयते । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-101 उपधायाश्च been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-101 उपधायाश्च has been used in the form अनुकीर्तयेत् derived from √कॄत् (कॄतँ संशब्दने १०. १५५).

    The विवक्षा is विधिलिँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोगः, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    कॄत् + णिच् । By 3-1-25 सत्यापपाशरूपवीणातूलश्लोकसेनालोमत्वचवर्मवर्णचूर्णचुरादिभ्यो णिच्।
    = कॄत् + इ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = किर् त् + इ । By 7-1-101 उपधायाश्च, a ॠकार:, when it is the penultimate (उपधा) letter of a धातु:, takes the इकारादेश:। As per 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः, the रेफ: is added to the इकार:।
    = कीर्ति । By 8-2-78 उपधायां च। “कीर्ति” gets the धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

    कीर्ति + लिँङ् । By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्च।
    = कीर्ति + यासुट् त् । By 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च, 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ।
    = कीर्ति + यास् त् । The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थः)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = कीर्ति + शप् + यास् त् । By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
    = कीर्ति + अ + यास् त् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् , 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = कीर्ते + अ + यास् त् । By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
    = कीर्तय् + अ + यास् त् । By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
    = कीर्तय + इय् त् । By 7-2-80 अतो येयः।
    = कीर्तय + इ त् । By 6-1-66 लोपो व्योर्वलि।
    = कीर्तयेत् । By 6-1-87 आद्गुणः।

    “अनु” is the उपसर्गः (ref. 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे, 1-4-80 ते प्राग्धातोः।)
    अनु + कीर्तयेत् = अनुकीर्तयेत्।

    2. Which सूत्रम् is used for the “शृ”-आदेशः in the form शृणुयात्?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-1-74 श्रुवः शृ च is used for the “शृ”-आदेशः in the form शृणुयात् derived from √श्रु (भ्वादि-गणः, श्रु श्रवणे, धातु-पाठः #१. १०९२).

    The विवक्षा is विधिलिँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    श्रु + लिँङ् । By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च।
    = श्रु + यासुट् त् । By 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च, 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ।
    = श्रु + यास् त् । The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थः)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
= शृ + श्नु + यास् त् । By 3-1-74 श्रुवः शृ च, the श्नु-प्रत्ययः is placed after the verbal root √श्रु (श्रु श्रवणे १. १०९२), when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. Simultaneously, “श्रु” takes the substitution “शृ”। Note: Since the substitute ‘शृ’ has more than one letter, as per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य, the entire term ‘श्रु’ (and not just its last letter) is replaced by ‘शृ’।
    The श्नु-प्रत्यय: which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्।
    = शृ + नु + यास् त् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते , 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    Note: The प्रत्यय: “नु” is ङिद्वत् by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् and “यास् त्” is ङित् by 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्‍मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्‍च। Therefore 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः from performing the गुण: substitution for the ऋकार: of “शृ” as well as the उकार: of “नु”।
    = शृनु + या त् । By 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्त्यस्य।
    = शृणुयात् । By वार्त्तिकम् (under 8-4-1) – ऋवर्णान्नस्य णत्वं वाच्यम्।

    3. Can you recall another सूत्रम् (besides 3-1-27 कण्ड्वादिभ्यो यक्) which prescribes the affix “यक्”?
Answer: The affix “यक्” is also prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक् – The यक्-प्रत्ययः follows a धातुः when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः follows denoting the action of the verb (भावे) or the object of the verb (कर्मणि)।

    4. Can you recall a सूत्रम् (other than 3-1-27 and the answer to question 3) which mentions the affix “यक्”?
Answer: The affix “यक्” is mentioned in the सूत्रम् 7-4-28 रिङ् शयग्लिङ्क्षु – The ending ऋकारः (ऋत्) of an अङ्गम् is replaced by रिङ्, when followed by any one of the following:
    1. श-प्रत्यय:
    2. यक्-प्रत्यय:
    3. यकारादि: (beginning with a यकार:) आर्धधातुक-प्रत्ययः of लिँङ्।

    5. Use some words from the verses to construct the following sentence in Sanskrit.
“One who reads the Geeta everyday with devotion is honored in Vaikuṇṭha (the realm of Lord Viṣṇu).” Use “अनुदिनम्” as an adverb for “every day.” (literally “day after day.”)
    Answer: यः भक्त्या गीताम् अनुदिनम् पठति सः विष्णुलोके महीयते = यो भक्त्या गीतामनुदिनं पठति स विष्णुलोके महीयते।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Worship the man who always speaks the truth.” Use the verbal root √सपर (सपर पूजायाम्, कण्ड्वादि-गणः) for “to worship.”
    Answer: यः नरः सर्वदा सत्यम् वदति/ब्रवीति/भाषते तम् सपर्य = यो नरः सर्वदा सत्यं वदति/ब्रवीति/भाषते तं सपर्य।

    सपर + यक् । By 3-1-27 कण्ड्वादिभ्यो यक्।
    = सपर + य । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = सपर् + य । By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः।
    “सपर्य” gets the धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

    The विवक्षा is लोँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, मध्यम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    सपर्य + लोँट् । By 3-3-162 लोट् च।
    = सपर्य + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

    = सपर्य + सि । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = सपर्य + हि । By 3-4-87 सेर्ह्यपिच्च।
    = सपर्य + शप् + हि । By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
    = सपर्य + अ + हि । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = सपर्य + हि । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
    = सपर्य । By 6-4-105 अतो हेः।

    Easy Questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-4-63 शश्छोऽटि been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-4-63 शश्छोऽटि has been used in the सन्धिः between शृणुयात् + श्रद्धया = शृणुयाच्छ्रद्धया।

    शृणुयात् + श्रद्धया
    = शृणुयाद् + श्रद्धया । By 8-2-39 झलां जशोऽन्ते।
    = शृणुयाज् + श्रद्धया । By 8-4-40 स्तोः श्चुना श्चु:।
    = शृणुयाच् + श्रद्धया । By 8-4-55 खरि च।
    = शृणुयाच्छ्रद्धया/शृणुयाच्श्रद्धया । By 8-4-63 शश्छोऽटि – When a झय् letter precedes, a शकार: is optionally substituted by a छकार:, if an अट् letter follows.
