Translation – Can those blessed days be (in store) for me, when the fearless old stags rub their bodies against mine while I, having fixed myself in the Padmāsana posture on a slab in the Himalayas on the bank of the Ganges, attain yogic sleep by constantly meditating on the Supreme Reality?

कण्डूयन्ते is derived from the verbal root √कण्डू (कण्डूञ् गात्रविघर्षणे, कण्ड्वादि-गणः)। The ञकारः at the end of “कण्डूञ्” gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

First we derive the धातुः “कण्डूय” as follows:

(1) कण्डू + यक् । By 3-1-27 कण्ड्वादिभ्यो यक् – The affix यक् is always used after the verbal roots in the कण्ड्वादि-गणः (group of terms headed by “कण्डूञ्”) with no change in their meaning. Note: The terms in the कण्ड्वादि-गणः are considered to be verbal roots as well as nominal stems. When they are used as verbal roots 3-1-27 applies. See questions 2 and 3.
Note: यक् is a कित्।

Now “कण्डूय” gets धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

By 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे, the टि-भागः of a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययः which substitutes a टित्-लकारः (a लकार: which has टकार: as a इत्), gets एकारः as the replacement.

By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent.

By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः, “अन्त्” comes in as a replacement for the झकारः of a प्रत्यय:।

By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे (applied twice.)

Questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-1-27 कण्ड्वादिभ्यो यक् (used in step 1) been used in the last fifteen verses of Chapter Eighteen of the गीता?

2. The terms in the कण्ड्वादि-गणः are considered to be verbal roots as well as nominal stems. How do we deduce that they are verbal roots? The महाभाष्यम् answers as follows: धातुप्रकरणाद्धातुः कस्य चासञ्जनादपि । Please explain.

3. How do we deduce that the terms in the कण्ड्वादि-गणः are also considered to be nominal stems? The महाभाष्यम् answers as follows: आह चायमिमं दीर्घं मन्ये धातुर्विभाषितः ॥ Please explain.

4. The वृत्तिः of the सूत्रम् 3-1-27 कण्ड्वादिभ्यो यक् in the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी is as follows एभ्यो धातुभ्यो नित्यं यक् स्यात् स्वार्थे। Commenting on the use of धातुभ्यः in the वृत्तिः the कौमुदी explains धातुभ्यः किम्? Please explain.

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Do not rub your dirty hands on the wall.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “मलिन” for “dirty” and the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “कुड्य” for “wall.”

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“A king is honored only in his (own) kingdom, while a scholar is honored everywhere.” Use the verbal root √मही (महीङ् पूजायाम्, कण्ड्वादि-गणः) for “to be honored.” Use the अव्ययम् “तु” for “while (but)” and the अव्ययम् “सर्वत्र” for “everywhere.”

Easy Questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-111 घेर्ङिति been used in the commentary?

2. Why doesn’t the सूत्रम् 6-4-134 अल्लोपोऽनः apply in the form ब्रह्मणः (प्रातिपदिकम् “ब्रह्मन्”, नपुंसकलिङ्गे षष्ठी-एकवचनम्)।

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-1-27 कण्ड्वादिभ्यो यक् (used in step 1) been used in the last fifteen verses of Chapter Eighteen of the गीता?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-1-27 कण्ड्वादिभ्यो यक् has been used in the form अभ्यसूयति।

    असूयति is derived from the verbal root √असु (असु उपतापे, कण्ड्वादि-गणः)।
The धातुः “असूय” is derived as follows:
    असु + यक् । By 3-1-27 कण्ड्वादिभ्यो यक्।
    Note: यक् is a कित्।
By 7-4-25 अकृत्सार्वधातुकयोर्दीर्घः।
    Now “असूय” gets धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।

    “अभि” is the उपसर्गः (ref.
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-1-27 कण्ड्वादिभ्यो यक् is in the domain of धातोः (which begins from 3-1-22 धातोरेकाचो हलादेः क्रियासमभिहारे यङ् ।) Therefore we have the अनुवृत्तिः of धातोः coming into 3-1-27. Hence we can deduce that the terms in कण्ड्वादि-गणः are verbal roots.
The other clue for deducing that the terms in कण्ड्वादि-गणः are verbal roots is as follows – पाणिनिः has attached ककारः as a इत् at the end of the affix यक् (prescribed by 3-1-27). The purpose of this इत् letter is to invoke 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to stop the गुणादेशः that would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः or 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च। But 7-3-84/7-3-86 only applies when the प्रत्ययः has the सञ्ज्ञा of सार्वधातुकम्/आर्धधातुकम्, which is only possible when the प्रत्ययः is prescribed to follow a धातुः। This tells us that the terms in कण्ड्वादि-गणः are verbal roots.

    3. How do we deduce that the terms in the कण्ड्वादि-गणः are also considered to be nominal stems? The महाभाष्यम् answers as follows: आह चायमिमं दीर्घं मन्ये धातुर्विभाषितः ॥ Please explain.
Answer: The meaning of the sentence above is as follows:
(अयम् ‘आचार्यः पाणिनिः’) This teacher (आह) has mentioned (इमं दीर्घम्) this elongation (at the end of some of the terms in कण्ड्वादि-गणः)। Hence (मन्ये) I – the भाष्यकारः – consider (धातुर्विभाषितः) the terms in कण्ड्वादि-गणः to be verbal roots only optionally – meaning that they are also nominal stems.
The reasoning is as follows – If these terms are considered only as verbal roots then the application of 7-4-25 अकृत्सार्वधातुकयोर्दीर्घः would cause the ending vowel of the अङ्गम् to be elongated anyway, which would defeat the purpose of having the ending vowel of some of the terms in कण्ड्वादि-गणः as दीर्घः। Therefore we deduce that these terms are also nominal stems.

    4. The वृत्तिः of the सूत्रम् 3-1-27 कण्ड्वादिभ्यो यक् in the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी is as follows एभ्यो धातुभ्यो नित्यं यक् स्यात् स्वार्थे। Commenting on the use of धातुभ्यः in the वृत्तिः the कौमुदी explains धातुभ्यः किम्? Please explain.
Answer: धातुभ्यः किम्? Why has the term धातुभ्यः been used in the वृत्तिः? The reason is to prevent the affix यक् from applying when a term in the कण्ड्वादि-गणः is used as a प्रातिपदिकम्। For example – Consider the term “कण्डू”। When used as a प्रातिपदिकम् it declines like the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् “वधू”। If the affix यक् were to apply here also we would end with undesirable forms.
(We have already seen in the prior question that) The terms in the कण्ड्वादि-गणः are considered to be verbal roots as well as nominal stems. 3-1-27 कण्ड्वादिभ्यो यक् applies only when they are used as verbal roots and not as nominal stems.

    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-111 घेर्ङिति has been used in the form हिमगिरेः (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “हिमगिरि”, षष्ठी-एकवचनम्)।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। “हिमगिरि” has the घि-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-7 शेषो घ्यसखि। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “ङस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 7-3-111 घेर्ङिति, when a ङित् सुँप् affix follows, then an अङ्गम् having the घि-सञ्ज्ञा takes the गुण: substitution. Note: As per 1-1-52, the गुण: substitution takes place for the ending letter (in this case इकारः) of the अङ्गम्।
By 6-1-110 ङसिङसोश्च।

    2. Why doesn’t the सूत्रम् 6-4-134 अल्लोपोऽनः apply in the form ब्रह्मणः (प्रातिपदिकम् “ब्रह्मन्”, नपुंसकलिङ्गे षष्ठी-एकवचनम्)।
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-134 अल्लोपोऽनः doesn’t apply in the form ब्रह्मणः because of the निषेध-सूत्रम् 6-4-137 न संयोगाद्वमन्तात्‌।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकारः of “ङस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा। The अङ्गम् gets the भ-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-18 यचि भम्।
Note: By 6-4-137 न संयोगाद्वमन्तात्‌, the अकारः of “अन्” does not take लोपः (as ordained by 6-4-134 अल्लोपोऽनः), when it follows a conjunct that has वकारः or मकारः as its last member. 6-4-137 is a निषेध-सूत्रम् to 6-4-134. In this example, we have the conjunct “ह्म्” preceding “अन्” – hence 6-4-137 stops 6-4-134.
By 8-4-2 अट्कुप्वाङ्नुम्व्यवायेऽपि।
