No commentary on these verses.

Gita Press translation – Thus resolved, O king, the glorious sage (Vasiṣṭha) of extraordinary fame, extolled Lord Viṣṇu (the most ancient Person) with the desire of transforming Ilā into a male child (21). Pleased with him, the almighty Lord Śrī Hari bestowed on the sage Vasiṣṭha the desired boon (of manhood for Ilā.) (And) thereby Ilā (the daughter of Vaivaswata Manu) became Sudyumna, the foremost of men (22).

इलायाः पुंस्त्वस्यैषणम् = पुंस्त्वकाम्या ।
Note: In the present example, the use of the affix ‘काम्यच्’ is grammatically irregular because the person (the sage Vasiṣṭha) is wishing something (masculinity) not for himself, but for someone else (Ilā.) And hence the conditions for applying the सूत्रम् 3-1-9 काम्यच्च are not fully satisfied.

First we derive the नाम-धातुः “पुंस्त्वकाम्य” as follows:

(1) पुंस्त्व + अम् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

(2) पुंस्त्व + अम् + काम्यच् । By 3-1-9 काम्यच्च – The affix काम्यच् is (also) employed, in the sense of wishing, after a पदम् which ends in a सुँप् affix and denotes the object of one’s own wish.

(3) पुंस्त्व + अम् + काम्य । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

“पुंस्त्व + अम् + काम्य” gets धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः

(4) पुंस्त्वकाम्य । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्। As per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-61 प्रत्ययस्य लुक्श्लुलुपः the entire affix “अम्” is elided.

Now we form the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् “पुंस्त्वकाम्या” from the नाम-धातुः “पुंस्त्वकाम्य”।

(5) पुंस्त्वकाम्य + अ । By 3-3-102 अ प्रत्ययात्‌ – In order to form a feminine noun, the affix “अ” is used following a verbal root ending in an affix. Note: A verbal root ending in an affix refers to a verbal root which gets the धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by the सूत्रम् 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।
Note: The affix “अ” gets आर्धधातक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः

(6) पुंस्त्वकाम्य् + अ । By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः – When an आर्धधातुकम् affix follows, the अकारः at the end of a अङ्गम् is elided if the अङ्गम् ends in a अकार: at the time when the आर्धधातुकम् affix is prescribed.

= पुंस्त्वकाम्य । Note: Since the affix “अ” has the कृत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्, “पुंस्त्वकाम्य” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च

(7) पुंस्त्वकाम्य + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌ – The प्रातिपदिकानि “अज” etc. and प्रातिपदिकानि ending in अकारः get the टाप् affix in the feminine gender.

(8) पुंस्त्वकाम्य + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(9) पुंस्त्वकाम्या । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः

The विवक्षा is तृतीया-एकवचनम्।

(10) पुंस्त्वकाम्या + टा । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

(11) पुंस्त्वकाम्या + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(12) पुंस्त्वकाम्ये + आ । By 7-3-105 आङि चापः – ”आप्” ending bases get एकारः as the substitute when followed by the affix “आङ्” (“टा”) or “ओस्”।

(13) पुंस्त्वकाम्यया । By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-48 अतो लोपः (used in step 6) been used last five verses of Chapter Six of the गीता?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-48 अतो लोपः has been used in the form जिज्ञासुः derived from the सन्नन्त-धातुः “जिज्ञास”।
    पूर्वाभ्यासेन तेनैव ह्रियते ह्यवशोऽपि सः ।
    जिज्ञासुरपि योगस्य शब्दब्रह्मातिवर्तते ॥ 6-44 ॥

    The सन्नन्त-धातुः “जिज्ञास” is derived from √ज्ञा (ज्ञा अवबोधने ९. ४३).

    ज्ञा + सन् । As per 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा।
    = ज्ञा + स । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
    = ज्ञास् ज्ञास । By 6-1-9 सन्यङोः।
    = जा ज्ञास । By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
    = ज ज्ञास । By 7-4-59 ह्रस्वः।
    = जिज्ञास । By 7-4-79 सन्यतः।
    “जिज्ञास” has धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

Now we derive the प्रातिपदिकम् “जिज्ञासु” from the सन्नन्त-धातुः “जिज्ञास”।

    जिज्ञास + उ । By 3-2-168 सनाशंसभिक्ष उः। Note: “उ” gets आर्धधातक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।
    = जिज्ञास् + उ । By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः – When an आर्धधातुकम् affix follows, the अकारः at the end of a अङ्गम् is elided if the अङ्गम् ends in a अकार: at the time when the आर्धधातुकम् affix is prescribed.
    = जिज्ञासु ।

Since the affix “उ” has the कृत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्, “जिज्ञासु” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। “जिज्ञासु” is an adjective which declines like “गुरु” in the masculine, “धेनु” in the feminine and “मधु” in the neuter.

    The विवक्षा is पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्।
    जिज्ञासु + सुँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
    = जिज्ञासु + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = जिज्ञासुः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।

    2. The form अस्तौषीत् used in the verses is a आर्ष-प्रयोगः। What would be the grammatically correct form?
Answer: The grammatically correct form is अस्तावीत्।

    The form अस्तावीत् is derived from √स्तु (ष्टुञ् स्तुतौ, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२. ३८).

The धातुः “ष्टुञ्” has an initial षकारः in the धातु-पाठः। By 6-1-64 धात्वादेः षः सः , there is the substitution of सकारः in the place of the initial षकारः of a धातुः। And by the परिभाषा “निमित्तापाये नैमित्तिकस्याप्यपाय:” (when a cause is gone, it’s effect is also gone) the टकार-आदेशः for the तकारः, which has come in by 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः, because of the presence of the षकारः, reverts to the तकारः since the cause for the टकारादेश: no longer exists.

    The विवक्षा here is लुँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।

    स्तु + लुँङ् । By 3-2-110 लुङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च।
    = स्तु + च्लि + त् । By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि।
    = स्तु + सिँच् + त् । By 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्।
    = स्तु + स् + त् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः। But the special rule 7-2-72 स्तुसुधूञ्भ्यः परस्मैपदेषु applies in the next step. Note: We have not discussed 7-2-72 स्तुसुधूञ्भ्यः परस्मैपदेषु in the class.
    = स्तु + इट् स् + त् । By 7-2-72 स्तुसुधूञ्भ्यः परस्मैपदेषु – When followed by a परस्मैपदम् affix, the affix “सिँच्” takes the augment “इट्” when it follows a अङ्गम् which consists of the verbal root √स्तु (ष्टुञ् स्तुतौ २. ३८) or √सु (षुञ् अभिषवे ५. १) or √धू (धूञ् कम्पने ९. २०). As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the “इट्”-आगम: joins at the beginning of the affix “सिँच्”।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
    = अट् स्ताव् + इ स् + ई त् । By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः, 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ।
    = अ स्ताव् + इ स् + ई त् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = अ स्ताव् + इ + ई त् । By 8-2-28 इट ईटि – A सकार:, which is preceded by the augment इट् and followed by the augment ईट्, is elided.
    = अस्तावीत् । By 6-1-01 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः। Note: By the वार्त्तिकम् (under 8-2-3) सिज्लोप एकादेशे सिद्धो वाच्यः – If a single substitute is to be done, then the elision of the affix सिँच् should be considered सिद्ध: (evident.) This वार्त्तिकम् allows 6-1-01 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः to apply in spite of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्।

    Note: In the form अस्तौषीत् which is a आर्ष-प्रयोगः, the सूत्रम् 7-2-72 स्तुसुधूञ्भ्यः परस्मैपदेषु has been ignored.

    3. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-34 आत औ णलः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-34 आत औ णलः has been used in the form ददौ derived from √दा (डुदाञ् दाने ३. १०).

    The विवक्षा is लिँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    दा + लिँट् । By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
    = दा + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = दा + तिप् । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्।
    = दा + णल् । By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः।
    = दा + औ । By 7-1-34 आत औ णलः – The “णल्”-प्रत्यय: is substituted by a औकार:, when it follows a धातु: that ends in a आकार:।
    = दा दा + औ । By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य। As per 1-1-59 द्विर्वचनेऽचि, we apply 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य before applying 6-1-88 वृद्धिरेचि।
    = द दा + औ । By 7-4-59 ह्रस्वः।
    = ददौ । By 6-1-88 वृद्धिरेचि।

    4. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I went to the Ashram with a desire for peace (for myself.)” Use the affix “काम्यच्”।
    Answer: शान्तिकाम्यया आश्रमम् अगाम्/अगमम्/अगच्छम् = शान्तिकाम्ययाश्रममगाम्/ शान्तिकाम्ययाश्रममगमम्/ शान्तिकाम्ययाश्रममगच्छम्।

    Note: The form अगाम् is derived from the verbal root √इ (इण् गतौ २. ४०). The विवक्षा is लुँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, उत्तम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    The form अगमम् is derived from the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७). The विवक्षा is लुँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, उत्तम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    The form अगच्छम् is derived from the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७). The विवक्षा is लँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, उत्तम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।

    5. Translate the sentence above using the affix “क्यच्।”
    Answer: शान्तीयया आश्रमम् अगाम्/अगमम्/अगच्छम् = शान्तीययाश्रममगाम्/ शान्तीययाश्रममगमम्/ शान्तीययाश्रममगच्छम्।

    6. Translate the above sentence without using a नाम-धातुः। Use षष्ठी-विभक्तिः with “peace.”
    Answer: आत्मनः शान्तेः/शान्त्याः इच्छया आश्रमम् अगाम्/अगमम्/अगच्छम् = आत्मनः शान्तेरिच्छयाश्रममगाम्/शान्तेरिच्छयाश्रममगमम्/शान्तेरिच्छयाश्रममगच्छम् – अथवा – आत्मनः शान्त्या इच्छयाश्रममगाम्/इच्छयाश्रममगमम्/इच्छयाश्रममगच्छम्।

    Easy Questions:

    1. Can you spot the augment “याट्” in the verses?
Answer: The augment “याट्” can be seen in the इलायाः (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “इला”, षष्ठी-एकवचनम्)।

    इला + ङस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा……….।
    = इला + अस् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “ङस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
    = इला + याट् अस् । By 7-3-113 याडापः – The “ङित्” (having ङकार: as a इत्) affixes following a base ending in an “आप्” affix get the augment “याट्”। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the augment “याट्” attaches to the beginning of the affix “अस्”।
    = इला + या अस् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = इलायास् । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः।
    = इलायाः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।

    2. Derive the form महायशाः (पुंलिङ्गे, प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) from the प्रातिपदिकम् “महायशस्”।
    Answer: महायशस् + सुँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। Here “सुँ” has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य।
    = महायशस् + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = महायशास् + स् । By 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः।
