स्वान् mAp

Today we will look at the form स्वान् mAp from the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी।

Translation – That Lord Viṣṇu is my goal who i) made (even) enemies go to heaven, ii) made his own (devotees) understand the meaning of the Vedas, iii) made the gods consume nectar, iv) made Lord Brahma study the Veda and v) made the Earth sit on water.

स्वान् is पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-बहुवचनम् of the सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘स्व’।

‘स्व’ gets the कर्म-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-52 गतिबुद्धिप्रत्यवसानार्थशब्दकर्माकर्मकाणामणि कर्ता स णौ – A कर्ता (agent) of a non-causal verbal root becomes the कर्म (object) of the causal verbal root provided the verbal root either –
(i) denotes either गति: (movement) or बुद्धि: (perception) or प्रत्यवसानम् (consuming) or
(ii) has शब्द: (sound) as its object or
(iii) has no object at all.

Note: As per the सूत्रम् 1-4-55 तत्प्रयोजको हेतुश्च we know that श्रीहरिः is the हेतु: (cause) in the sentence श्रीहरिः स्वान् वेदार्थमवेदयत्। On removing the हेतु: we get the non-causative form of the sentence as स्वे वेदार्थमविदुः । स्वे is प्रथमा-बहुवचनम् of the सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘स्व’। Hence ‘स्व’ is the अणौ कर्ता (agent of the non-causal verbal root √विद् (विदँ ज्ञाने २. ५९). This अणौ कर्ता becomes the कर्म (object) णौ (of the causal form of the verbal root √विद्) since the conditions for applying the सूत्रम् 1-4-52 are satisfied here.

(1) स्व + शस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। Since ‘स्व’ has the कर्म-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-52 गतिबुद्धिप्रत्यवसानार्थशब्दकर्माकर्मकाणामणि कर्ता स णौ, it takes a second case affix by 2-3-2 कर्मणि द्वितीया – A second case affix (‘अम्’, ‘औट्’, ‘शस्’) is used to denote कर्म (object of the action) provided it has not been expressed otherwise.

(2) स्व + अस् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘शस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा ।

(3) स्वास् । By 6-1-102 प्रथमयोः पूर्वसवर्णः – When a अक् letter is followed by a vowel (अच्) of the first (nominative) or second (accusative) case then for the two of them (अक् + अच्) there is a single substitute which is the elongated form of the first member (the अक् letter.)

(4) स्वान् । By 6-1-103 तस्माच्छसो नः पुंसि – In the masculine gender, when the letter ‘स्’ of the affix ‘शस्’ follows a vowel which has been elongated by 6-1-102 then it is replaced by the letter ‘न्’।

Questions:

1. In which other words (besides in स्वान्) in the verse does the सूत्रम् 1-4-52 गतिबुद्धिप्रत्यवसानार्थशब्दकर्माकर्मकाणामणि कर्ता स णौ find application?

2. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of the affix लँट् in the form स्थापयति in the commentary?

3. Which कृत् affix is used to form the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अवस्था’ (used in the compounds ण्यन्तावस्थायाम् and अण्यन्तावस्थायाम् in the commentary)?

4. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Śrī Kṛṣṇa imparted the meaning of the Upaniṣads to Arjuna.” Paraphrase to “Śrī Kṛṣṇa made Arjuna understand the meaning of the Upaniṣads.”

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The sage Viśwāmitra sent Triśaṅku to heaven.” Paraphrase to “The sage Viśwāmitra made Triśaṅku go to heaven.”

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Pūtanā fed poison to Śrī Kṛṣṇa.”

Easy questions:

1. In the verses, can you spot two other words (besides स्वान्) in which the सूत्रम् 6-1-103 तस्माच्छसो नः पुंसि has been used?

2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the वृद्धि: substitution in आशयत् and आसयत्?

  1. 1. In which other words (besides in स्वान्) in the verse does the सूत्रम् 1-4-52 गतिबुद्धिप्रत्यवसानार्थशब्दकर्माकर्मकाणामणि कर्ता स णौ find application?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 1-4-52 गतिबुद्धिप्रत्यवसानार्थशब्दकर्माकर्मकाणामणि कर्ता स णौ also finds application in the following words – शत्रून् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शत्रु’, द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्) , देवान् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘देव’, पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्), विधिम् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विधि’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) and पृथ्वीम् (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पृथ्वी’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।

The अण्यन्तावस्था for the above would be –

शत्रवः स्वर्गमगच्छन्। शत्रवः is the agent of the non-causal form of the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७). This agent in the non-causal state becomes the कर्म (object) णौ (of the causal form of the verbal root √गम्) since this verbal root denotes गति: (movement) and hence the condition for applying the सूत्रम् 1-4-52 is satisfied here.

देवा अमृतमाश्नन्। देवाः is the agent of the non-causal form of the verbal root √अश् (अशँ भोजने ९. ५९). This agent in the non-causal state becomes the कर्म (object) णौ (of the causal form of the verbal root √अश्) since this verbal root denotes प्रत्यवसानम् (consuming) and hence the condition for applying the सूत्रम् 1-4-52 is satisfied here.

विधिर्वेदमध्यैत। विधिः is the agent of the non-causal form of the verbal root √इ (इङ् अध्ययने – नित्यमधिपूर्वः २. ४१). This agent in the non-causal state becomes the कर्म (object) णौ (of the causal form of the verbal root √इ) since this verbal root has शब्द: (sound) as its object and hence the condition for applying the सूत्रम् 1-4-52 is satisfied here.

सलिले पृथ्व्यास्त। पृथ्वी is the agent of the non-causal form of the verbal root √आस् (आसँ उपवेशने २. ११). This agent in the non-causal state becomes the कर्म (object) णौ (of the causal form of the verbal root √आस्) since this verbal root is intransitive (takes no object) and hence the condition for applying the सूत्रम् 1-4-52 is satisfied here.

    2. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of the affix लँट् in the form स्थापयति in the commentary?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-118 लट् स्मे justifies the use of the affix लँट् in the form स्थापयति (स्म) – derived from the causative form of the verbal root √स्था (ष्ठा गतिनिवृत्तौ १. १०७७).

    The विवक्षा is लँट्, प्रथम-पुरुषः, कर्तरि प्रयोगः (हेतुमति), एकवचनम्।
    स्था + णिच् । By 3-1-26 हेतुमति च।
    = स्था + इ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = स्था पुक् + इ । By 7-3-36 अर्त्तिह्रीव्लीरीक्नूयीक्ष्माय्यातां पुङ्णौ – the augment पुक् is added to the roots √ऋ (ऋ गतिप्रापणयोः १. १०८६, ऋ गतौ ३. १७), √ह्री (ह्री लज्जायाम् ३. ३), √व्ली (व्ली वरणे ९. ३७), √री (रीङ् श्रवणे ४. ३३, री गतिरेषणयोः ९. ३५), √क्नूय् (क्नूयीँ शब्द उन्दने च १. ५५८), √क्ष्माय् (क्ष्मायीँ विधूनने १. ५५९) and to a root ending in the letter ‘आ’ when the causative affix ‘णि’ follows. As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the augment ‘पुक्’ joins at the end of the अङ्गम्।
    = स्थाप् + इ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: The letter ‘उ’ in ‘पुक्’ is उच्चारणार्थ: (for pronunciation only.)
    = स्थापि । ‘स्थापि’ gets the धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

स्थापि + लँट् (+ स्म) । By 3-2-118 लट् स्मे – When associated with the word स्म, a verbal root takes the affix लँट् in the sense of past not of today, provided that the action is unperceived by the narrator. Note: This सूत्रम् is a अपवादः (exception) for 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
    = स्थापि + अ + ति (+ स्म) । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = स्थापे + अ + ति (+ स्म) । By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
    = स्थापयति स्म । By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।

    3. Which कृत् affix is used to form the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अवस्था’ (used in the compounds ण्यन्तावस्थायाम् and अण्यन्तावस्थायाम् in the commentary)?
    Answer: The कृत् affix ‘अङ्’ is used to form the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अवस्था’ – derived from the verbal root √स्था (ष्ठा गतिनिवृत्तौ १. १०७७) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘अव’।

अव स्था + अङ् । By 3-3-106 आतश्चोपसर्गे – Following a verbal root which ends in the letter ‘आ’ and is in composition with a उपसर्गः (ref: 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे), the affix अङ् is used to denote in the feminine gender either (i) the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state or (ii) any कारक: except the agent of the action, provided the word so derived is a proper name.
    = अव स्था + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = अव स्थ् + अ । By 6-4-64 आतो लोप इटि च।
    = अवस्थ । ‘अवस्थ’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

Note: Since this प्रातिपदिकम् is used in the feminine gender we have to add the appropriate feminine affix (स्त्रीप्रत्यय:)।
    अवस्थ + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।
    = अवस्थ + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = अवस्था । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः।

    4. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Śrī Kṛṣṇa imparted the meaning of the Upaniṣads to Arjuna.” Paraphrase to “Śrī Kṛṣṇa made Arjuna understand the meaning of the Upaniṣads.”
    Answer: श्रीकृष्णः अर्जुनम् उपनिषदाम् अर्थम् वेदयामास = श्रीकृष्णोऽर्जुनमुपनिषदामर्थं वेदयामास।

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The sage Viśwāmitra sent Triśaṅku to heaven.” Paraphrase to “The sage Viśwāmitra made Triśaṅku go to heaven.”
    Answer: ऋषिः विश्वामित्रः त्रिशङ्‌कुम् स्वर्गम् गमयामास = ऋषिर्विश्वामित्रस्त्रिशङ्‌कुं स्वर्गं गमयामास।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Pūtanā fed poison to Śrī Kṛṣṇa.”
    Answer: पूतना श्रीकृष्णम् विषम् पाययामास = पूतना श्रीकृष्णं विषं पाययामास।

    Easy questions:

    1. In the verses, can you spot two other words (besides स्वान्) in which the सूत्रम् 6-1-103 तस्माच्छसो नः पुंसि has been used?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-1-103 तस्माच्छसो नः पुंसि has also been used in the forms शत्रून् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शत्रु’, द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्) and देवान् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘देव’, पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्)।

    शत्रु + शस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा……..।
    = शत्रु + अस् । By 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘शस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
    = शत्रूस् । By 6-1-102 प्रथमयोः पूर्वसवर्णः।
= शत्रून् । By 6-1-103 तस्माच्छसो नः पुंसि – In the masculine gender, when the letter ‘स्’ of the affix ‘शस्’ follows a vowel which has been elongated by 6-1-102, it is replaced by the letter ‘न्’।

Derivation of देवान् from the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘देव’ is similar to the above.
