Gita Press translation – Oh, (how) marvelous are the doings of the Lord (Your Māyā), deluded by which this Jīva fails to perceive Death (who kills all), though endowed with vision, when he desires to survive (even) after cremating his father and son (old and young), contemplating evil deeds in order to enjoy the carnal pleasures (which have no reality whatsoever)! (3) The learned have spoken of the world as perishable; while those wise men who have realized the Self even perceive it as such (through deep concentration of mind.) Yet are people deluded by Your Māyā, O birth-less one! Highly wonderful are Your ways and I (simply) bow to You, the birth-less Lord (4).

जिजीविषति is a desiderative form derived from the धातुः √जीव् (भ्वादि-गणः, जीवँ प्राणधारणे, धातु-पाठः #१.

As per 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा – In order to express wish/desire, the affix सन् is optionally prescribed after a verbal root which underlies the object of and shares the same agent with the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६.

By 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः – An आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: beginning with a letter of the वल्-प्रत्याहारः gets the augment इट् । As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the आगम: “इट्” joins at the beginning of the प्रत्यय: “स”।

By 6-1-9 सन्यङोः – There is reduplication of the first portion – containing a single vowel – of a verbal root ending in the affix “सन्”/”यङ्” which is not already reduplicated. But if the verbal root (that has more than one vowel) begins with a vowel, then the reduplication is of the second portion – containing a single vowel.

By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः – Of the consonants of a reduplicate (अभ्यासः – ref. 6-1-4 पूर्वोऽभ्यासः), only the one (if any) at the beginning is retained, the rest are elided.

By 7-4-59 ह्रस्वः, the अच् (vowel) of a reduplicate (अभ्यासः – ref. 6-1-4 पूर्वोऽभ्यासः) is substituted by a short vowel.

By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:, the letter “स्” is replaced by the cerebral “ष्” when preceded either by a letter of the इण्-प्रत्याहार: or a letter of the क-वर्ग: (“क्”, “ख्”, “ग्”, “घ्”, “ङ्”)। This substitution only takes place if the “स्” is an आदेश: (substitute) or part of a प्रत्यय: (affix.)

“जिजीविष” has धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः

In the धातु-पाठः, the verbal root √जीव् is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, in कर्तरि प्रयोग: √जीव् takes परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. Hence the सन्नन्त-धातुः “जिजीविष” also takes परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: as per 1-3-62 पूर्ववत् सनः – A सन्नन्त-धातुः (verbal root ending in the affix “सन्”) takes a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यय: in the same manner as the verbal root to which the affix सन् is added.
Note: This implies that if the धातु: to which the affix सन् is added is आत्मनेपदी/परस्मैपदी/उभयपदी then the सन्नन्त-धातुः is correspondingly आत्मनेपदी/परस्मैपदी/उभयपदी।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent.

By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे

  1. 1. Where has the verbal root √जीव् (जीवँ प्राणधारणे १. ६४३) been used with the affix सन् in a तिङन्तं पदम् in the गीता?
Answer: The verbal root √जीव् (जीवँ प्राणधारणे १. ६४३) been used with the affix सन् in the form जिजीविषामः derived from the सन्नन्त-धातुः “जिजीविष”। (Derivation of “जिजीविष” is same as in the post.)

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकारः of “मस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी says – धातोर्विहितत्वादिह सन आर्धधातुकत्वम्। Please explain.
Answer: As per 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः – An affix, which does not belong to the तिङ्-प्रत्याहारः and does not have शकारः as an इत्, gets the designation of आर्धधातुकम् if it is prescribed in the “धातो:” अधिकार:।
By the सूत्रम् 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा, the affix सन् is prescribed requiring the condition “धातोः” – meaning that this affix सन् can only be used following a verbal root. Hence this affix सन् gets the सञ्ज्ञा of आर्धधातुकम् (which requires “धातोः”।) This is what is explained in the statement “धातोर्विहितत्वादिह सन आर्धधातुकत्वम्।”
Note: The affix सन् prescribed by 3-1-5 गुप्तिज्किद्भ्यः सन् and 3-1-6 मान्बधदान्शान्भ्यो दीर्घश्चाभ्यासस्य does not get the आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा because it is not prescribed with the condition “धातोः”।

    3. Commenting further on the सूत्रम् 3-1-7 the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी says – कर्मणः किम् । Please explain.
Answer: As per the सूत्रम् 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा – In order to express wish/desire, the affix सन् is optionally prescribed after a verbal root which underlies the object of and shares the same agent with the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६. In the example “गमनेनेच्छति”, the गमनक्रिया (action of going) is the करणम् (instrument) and not the कर्म (object) of the verbal root √इष्। Hence the affix सन् cannot be used here even though the verbal roots √इष् and √गम् share the same agent.

    4. Commenting further on the सूत्रम् 3-1-7 the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी says – समानकर्तृकात्किम् । Please explain.
In the example “शिष्याः पठन्त्वितीच्छति गुरुः”, the agent (गुरुः) of the verbal root √इष् is not  the same as the agent (शिष्याः) of the verbal root √पठ् which underlies the object of the desire. Hence the affix सन् cannot be used here.

    5. Commenting further on the सूत्रम् 3-1-7 the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी says – वाग्रहणात्पक्षे वाक्यमपि। Please explain.
Answer: As per the सूत्रम् 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा the affix सन् is prescribed only optionally (वा)। In the optional case when the affix सन् is not used, a sentence (वाक्यम्) can be used. e.g. जिगमिषति or गन्तुमिच्छति।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I do not want to live in vain.” Use the अव्ययम् “वृथा” for “in vain.”
    Answer:

    Easy Questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-110 ऋतो ङिसर्वनामस्थानयोः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-110 ऋतो ङिसर्वनामस्थानयोः is used in the form पितरम् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “पितृ”, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्।)
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्…। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of “अम्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
Note: The affix “अम्” has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य। This allows 7-3-110 to apply in the step below.
By 7-3-110 ऋतो ङिसर्वनामस्थानयोः – The ending ऋकार: of a अङ्गम् gets a गुणः replacement, when followed by the affix “ङि” (सप्तमी-एकवचनम्) or an affix with the designation सर्वनामस्थानम्।। As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending ऋकार: takes the गुणादेश:। By 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः – In the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a “रँ” letter.

    2. Where has the सम्बुद्धिः affix been used in the verses?
Answer: The सम्बुद्धिः affix has been used in the verse in the form (हे) अज (प्रातिपदिकम् “अज”, पुंलिङ्गे सम्बुद्धि:)।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा………। “सुँ” gets सम्बुद्धि-सञ्ज्ञा by 2-3-49 एकवचनं सम्बुद्धिः।
    = (हे) अज + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = (हे) अज । By 6-1-69 एङ्ह्रस्वात्‌ सम्बुद्धेः, following an अङ्गम् ending in एङ् (“ए” or “ओ”) or a short vowel, a consonant is dropped if it belongs to a सम्बुद्धि: affix.
