Today we will look at the form अजनि 3As-लुँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 10.3.46.

Gita Press translation – Śrī Śuka continued : Having thus spoken, Lord Śrī Hari, became silent and instantly assumed the form of an ordinary child by His own free will, His parents gazing (with wonder) (46). Thereupon as the aforesaid Vasudeva (the son of Śūra, who suddenly found his fetters loosened) felt inclined to step out of the lying-in-chamber, taking his son securely (in a winnowing basket covered with soft linen,) as urged by the Lord, that (very) moment Yogamāyā, who is nick-named Ajā (birthless), was born through the wife of Nanda (at Gokula) (47).

अजनि is derived from the धातुः √जन् (दिवादि-गणः, जनीँ प्रादुर्भावे, धातु-पाठः # ४. ४४)

In the धातु-पाठः, the √जन्-धातुः has one इत् letter which is the ईकार: following the नकार:। This ईकार: gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes लोपः by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। This इत् letter has a अनुदात्त-स्वर:। Thus by 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम्, √जन् takes आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः।

By 3-2-110 लुङ्, the affix लुँङ् is prescribed after a verbal root when used in the sense of past.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates “त” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि, when लुँङ् follows, the प्रत्यय: “च्लि” is prescribed after a verbal root.

By 3-1-61 दीपजनबुधपूरितायिप्यायिभ्योऽन्यतरस्याम् – When the term “त” (आत्मनेपदप्रथमपुरुषैकवचनम्) follows, there is an optional substitution of “चिण्” in place of “च्लि” when following the verbal root √दीप् (दीपीँ दीप्तौ ४.

Note: As per 7-3-35 जनिवध्योश्च – There is no वृद्धिः substitute in place of the penultimate vowel of √जन् (जनीँ प्रादुर्भावे ४. ४४) or √वध् when followed by the affix चिण् or a कृत् affix which is either ञित् (has ञकार: as a इत्) or णित् (has णकार: as a इत्)।

By 6-4-104 चिणो लुक् – When following the affix “चिण्”, the term “त” (आत्मनेपदप्रथमपुरुषैकवचनम्) takes the लुक् elision. Note: As per the सूत्रम् 1-1-61 प्रत्ययस्य लुक्‌श्लुलुपः the entire term “त” is elided.

By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the “अट्”-आगमः which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “अट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the अङ्गम्।

Questions:

1. Where has √जन् (जनीँ प्रादुर्भावे ४. ४४) been used for the first time in a तिङन्तं पदम् in the गीता?

2. What would be the optional final form (in the case where the optional substitution of “चिण्” is not done by 3-1-61 दीपजनबुधपूरितायिप्यायिभ्योऽन्यतरस्याम्)?

3. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 7-3-35 जनिवध्योश्च the काशिका says – वधादेशस्यादन्तत्वादेव वृद्धेरभावः। Please explain.

4. Which सूत्रम् is used for the “इयँङ्”-आदेशः in the form इयेष?

5. Can you spot an augment “आट्” in the commentary?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“A doubt arose in my mind.” Use the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् “शङ्का” for “doubt.”

Easy Questions:

1. Which two सूत्रे are required to get आसीत् + हरिः = आसीद्धरिः?

2. In the verses can you spot two words in which the सूत्रम् 7-3-105 आङि चापः has been used?
