Gita Press translation – Maitreya resumed : Thus supplicated by Brahmā (the unborn), Lord Śiva (the father of the universe) felt much pleased, and with a hearty laugh said, O Vidura (possessed of mighty arms), “Listen!” (1) Śrī Mahādeva said : I never complain of nor do I recollect the misdemeanor of fools dominated by the Lord’s Māyā (deluding potency), O lord of created beings. I have meted out punishment to them (just in order to teach them a lesson) (2).

अधायि is derived from the धातुः √धा (जुहोत्यादि-गणः, डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके धातु-पाठः #३. ११)

The “डु” at the beginning of this धातुः gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-5 आदिर्ञिटुडवः। The ञकारः at the end gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्। Both take लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

Since this is a कर्मणि प्रयोग:, the verbal root √धा takes आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययः as per 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः

By 3-2-110 लुङ्, the affix लुँङ् is prescribed after a verbal root when used in the sense of past.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates “त” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि, when लुँङ् follows, the प्रत्यय: “च्लि” is prescribed after a verbal root.

By 3-1-66 चिण् भावकर्मणोः – There is a substitution of “चिण्” in place of “च्लि” when followed by the term “त” (आत्मनेपदप्रथमपुरुषैकवचनम्) used in passive (कर्मणि/भावे।) Note: 3-1-66 is अपवादः for 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्।

By 7-3-33 आतो युक् चिण्कृतोः – A अङ्गम् ending in a आकार: takes the augment युक् when followed by the affix चिण् or a कृत् affix which is either ञित् (has ञकार: as a इत्) or णित् (has णकार: as a इत्)। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “युक्”-आगमः at the end of the अङ्गम्।

Note: The उकार: in “युक्” is उच्चारणार्थ: (for pronunciation only.)

By 6-4-104 चिणो लुक् – When following the affix “चिण्”, the term “त” (आत्मनेपदप्रथमपुरुषैकवचनम्) takes the लुक् elision. Note: As per the सूत्रम् 1-1-61 प्रत्ययस्य लुक्‌श्लुलुपः the entire term “त” is elided.

By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the “अट्”-आगमः which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “अट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the अङ्गम्।

“अभि” is the उपसर्गः (ref.
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

  1. 1. Where has the verbal root √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके ३. ११) used with the उपसर्गः “अभि” (as in this example) in a तिङन्तं पदम् in Chapter 17 of the गीता?
    Answer: In verse 27 of Chapter Seventeen the verbal root √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके ३. ११) has been used with the उपसर्गः “अभि” in the form अभिधीयते

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः।
By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
By 6-4-66 घुमास्थागापाजहातिसां हलि।

    “अभि” is the उपसर्ग: (ref.

    2. By which सूत्रम् does पाणिनिः define the कृत्-सञ्ज्ञा referred to in the सूत्रम् 7-3-33 आतो युक् चिण्कृतोः (used in step 7)?
Answer: पाणिनिः defines the कृत्-सञ्ज्ञा by the सूत्रम् 3-1-93 कृदतिङ् – In the धात्वधिकारः starting with 3-1-91 धातोः, all the affixes other than the तिङ् affixes get the designation कृत्

    3. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 7-3-33 आतो युक् चिण्कृतोः the तत्त्वबोधिनी says “अचो ञ्णिति” इत्यतो ञ्णितीत्यनुवर्तते तच्च कृतो विशेषणं न तु चिणः। Please explain.
    Answer: The अनुवृत्तिः of ञ्णिति comes down from 7-2-115 अचो ञ्णिति into the सूत्रम् 7-3-33 आतो युक् चिण्कृतोः। Since चिण् is always a णित्, there is no need to specify that 7-3-33 only applies to the affix चिण् when it is a णित् or a ञित्। “तस्य णित्त्वेनाव्यभिचारात्” means that चिण् never deviates from being a णित्।
On the other hand not all कृत् affixes are णित् or ञित्। So it is necessary to stipulate that only those कृत् affixes which are णित् or ञित् come under the domain of 7-3-33. This is what is meant by “ञ्णितीत्यनुवर्तते तच्च कृतो विशेषणम्।”

    4. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 7-3-33 आतो युक् चिण्कृतोः the काशिका says चिण्कृतोः इति किम्? Please explain.
    Answer: The form ददौ is derived from √दा (डुदाञ् दाने ३.

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः।
By 7-1-34 आत औ णलः। Note: As per 7-3-33 आतो युक् चिण्कृतोः – A अङ्गम् ending in a आकार: takes the augment युक् when followed by the affix चिण् or a कृत् affix which is either ञित् (has ञकार: as a इत्) or णित् (has णकार: as a इत्)। Here even though the अङ्गम् “दा” ends in a आकारः it is not followed either by the affix चिण् or a कृत् affix which is either ञित् or णित्। Instead the अङ्गम् is followed by the affix णल् which is not a कृत् affix. Therefore 7-3-33 does not apply here.
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य। As per 1-1-59 द्विर्वचनेऽचि, we apply 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य before applying 6-1-88 वृद्धिरेचि।
By 7-4-59 ह्रस्वः।
By 6-1-88 वृद्धिरेचि।

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-4-25 अकृत्सार्वधातुकयोर्दीर्घः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-4-25 अकृत्सार्वधातुकयोर्दीर्घः has been used in the form श्रूयताम् derived from √श्रु (श्रु श्रवणे १.

By 3-3-162 लोट् च।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः।
By 3-4-90 आमेतः, the एकार: of लोँट् is replaced by आम्। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकार: of “ताम्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
By 7-4-25 अकृत्सार्वधातुकयोर्दीर्घः, the ending vowel of an अङ्गम् is elongated when followed by a प्रत्ययः which begins with a यकार:, as long as the प्रत्यय: neither has the कृत्-सञ्ज्ञा nor the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
The teacher said “Pay attention.” It was said by the teacher “Let attention be given.” Use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “अवधान” for “attention”.

    Easy Questions:

    1. Does 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः come in the अधिकारः of एकः पूर्वपरयोः?
    Answer: No. 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः does not come in the अधिकारः of “एकः पूर्वपरयोः” which goes from 6-1-84 एकः पूर्वपरयोः up to 6-1-111 ऋत उत्।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-108 ह्रस्वस्य गुणः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-108 ह्रस्वस्य गुणः has been used in the form (हे) महाबाहो (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “महाबाहु”, सम्बुद्धिः।)

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा………। Here “सुँ” has सम्बुद्धि-सञ्ज्ञा by 2-3-49 एकवचनं सम्बुद्धिः।
By 7-3-108 ह्रस्वस्य गुणः, when the सम्बुद्धि: affix follows, there is a गुण: substitute for the (ending letter of) of an अङ्गम् ending in a short vowel.
By 6-1-69 एङ्ह्रस्वात् सम्बुद्धेः।
