Today we will look at the form अघानि 3Ps-लुँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 6.2.17.

Gita Press translation – Those sins are (certainly) got rid of by the said processes of expiation such as austere penance, charity and Japa (muttering of prayers), but not the kernel (vestiges in the form of impressions) of those sins, which is (also) traceable to the unrighteous acts. Those impressions too are obliterated through the service of (devotion to) the Lord’s feet (17). Any name of the Lord of excellent renown, which is distinctly pronounced (by a man) – (whether) knowingly (with the consciousness that it wipes out all one’s sins) or unknowingly (without such knowledge) – destroys a man’s sins (as surely) as a fire consumes the fuel (under all circumstances, no matter whether it has been kindled by a man who knows its burning properties or by an innocent child who is unaware of its burning capacity) (18).

अघानि is derived from the धातुः √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२. २).

The ending अकारः of “हनँ” gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes लोपः by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

Since this is a कर्मणि प्रयोग:, the verbal root √हन् takes आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययः as per 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः

By 3-2-110 लुङ्, the affix लुँङ् is prescribed after a verbal root when used in the sense of past. See question 1.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates “त” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि, when लुँङ् follows, the प्रत्यय: “च्लि” is prescribed after a verbal root.

By 3-1-66 चिण् भावकर्मणोः – There is a substitution of “चिण्” in place of “च्लि” when followed by the term “त” (आत्मनेपदप्रथमपुरुषैकवचनम्) used in passive (कर्मणि/भावे।)

By 7-3-54 हो हन्तेर्ञ्णिन्नेषु, the हकारः of √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) gets replaced by a letter of the कवर्ग: when followed by an affix with ञकारः or णकारः as an इत्, or when followed (immediately) by a नकारः।

By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः – A penultimate (उपधा) अकार: of a अङ्गम् gets वृद्धिः as the substitute when followed by a प्रत्ययः which is a ञित् or a णित्।

By 6-4-104 चिणो लुक् – When following the affix “चिण्”, the term “त” (आत्मनेपदप्रथमपुरुषैकवचनम्) takes the लुक् elision. Note: As per the सूत्रम् 1-1-61 प्रत्ययस्य लुक्‌श्लुलुपः the entire term “त” is elided.

By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the “अट्”-आगमः which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “अट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the अङ्गम्।

Questions :

२) would have necessarily taken the substitution “वध” as per the सूत्रम् 2-4-43 लुङि च – When the intention is to add the affix लुँङ्, there is a substitution of “वध” in place of √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २). But the following rule (which we have not studied in the class) 2-4-44 आत्मनेपदेष्वन्यतरस्याम्‌ provides an optionality when a आत्मनेपदम् affix follows (as in the example above.) Please derive the optional form that results when the substitution “वध” is done.

2. Can you recall a सूत्रम् in which पाणिनिः specifically mentions the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) as well as the affix “चिण्” (used in this example)?

3. Where has this सूत्रम् (answer to question 2) been used in the गीता?

4. In the verses, can you spot the augment “यासुट्”?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“This village was destroyed by the hurricane.” Use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “प्रभञ्जन” for “hurricane”.

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“My mind was afflicted by anxiety.” Use the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् “चिन्ता” for “anxiety” and use the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) in the passive voice for “afflicted.”

Easy Questions:

1. Derive the form भवति (used in the commentary) from the verbal root √भू (भू सत्तायाम् १. १).

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-1-111 ऋत उत्‌ been used in the commentary?

२) would have necessarily taken the substitution “वध” as per the सूत्रम् 2-4-43 लुङि च – When the intention is to add the affix लुँङ्, there is a substitution of “वध” in place of √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २). But the following rule (which we have not studied in the class) 2-4-44 आत्मनेपदेष्वन्यतरस्याम्‌ provides an optionality when a आत्मनेपदम् affix follows (as in the example above.) Please derive the optional form that results when the substitution “वध” is done.
Answer: The optional form would be अवधि when the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) takes substitution “वध” as per the सूत्रम् 2-4-43 लुङि च।

By 3-2-110 लुङ्, the affix लुँङ् is prescribed after a verbal root when used in the sense of past. As per 2-4-44 आत्मनेपदेष्वन्यतरस्याम्‌ – There is an optional substitution of “वध” in place of √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २), when followed by लुँङ् affix which is आत्मनेपदम्। As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल् शित् सर्वस्य, the entire term “हन्” is replaced by “वध”।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः।
By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि।
By 3-1-66 चिण् भावकर्मणोः।
By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः। Note: 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः cannot apply here because as per 1-1-57 अचः परस्मिन् पूर्वविधौ, the लोप: done by 6-4-48 अतो लोपः has स्थानिवद्भाव: (it behaves like the item it replaced – अकार:) when it comes to an operation (वृद्धि:) that would be performed to the left of it. Hence as far as 7-2-116 is concerned, the उपधा of the अङ्गम् is the धकार: and hence it cannot apply.
By 6-4-104 चिणो लुक्।

    2. Can you recall a सूत्रम् in which पाणिनिः specifically mentions the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) as well as the affix “चिण्” (used in this example)?
Answer: पाणिनिः specifically mentions the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) as well as the affix “चिण्” in the following two सूत्रे –
    A) 7-3-32 हनस्तोऽचिण्णलोः – The ending letter (नकार:) of the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) is replaced by a तकार:, when followed by a प्रत्यय: (other than “चिण्” or “णल्”) which is either ञित् or णित्।

    B) 6-4-62 स्यसिच्सीयुट्तासिषु भावकर्मणोरुपदेशेऽज्झनग्रहदृशां वा चिण्वदिट् च – In the passive voice, when followed by the affix “स्य”, “सिँच्”, “सीयुट्” or “तासिँ”, a base (अङ्गम्) optionally undergoes the same operations as when “चिण्” follows, if the base consists of one of the following verbal roots:
    i. Any verbal root when ends in a vowel which is in उपदेश: (original instruction – which here means सूत्रपाठ:/धातुपाठ:)
    ii. २)
    iii.
In this optional case, the affix “स्य”, “सिँच्”, “सीयुट्” or “तासिँ” necessarily takes the “इट्”-आगम:।

    3. Where has this सूत्रम् (answer to question 2) been used in the गीता?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-32 हनस्तोऽचिण्णलोः has been used in the form घातयति, a causative form derived from √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २).

By 3-1-26 हेतुमति च।
By 7-3-54 हो हन्तेर्ञ्णिन्नेषु।
By 7-3-32 हनस्तोऽचिण्णलोः – The ending letter (नकार:) of the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) is replaced by a तकार:, when followed by a प्रत्यय: (other than “चिण्” or “णल्”) which is either ञित् or णित्।
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।

    4. In the verses, can you spot the augment “यासुट्”?
    Answer: The augment “यासुट्” is seen in the form दहेत् derived from √दह् (दहँ भस्मीकरणे १.

By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्च।
By 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च, the परस्मैपदम् affixes of लिँङ् get यासुट् as an augment, and this augment is उदात्तः and a ङित्1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the यासुट्-आगमः at the beginning of the प्रत्यय:।
The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थः)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।

    1. Derive the form भवति (used in the commentary) from the verbal root √भू (भू सत्तायाम् १. १).
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।

By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-1-111 ऋत उत्‌ been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-1-111 ऋत उत्‌ has been used in the form पापकर्तु: (प्रातिपदिकम् “पापकर्तृ”, पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-एकवचनम्)।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा………।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकारः of “ङस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा ।
By 6-1-111 ऋत उत्‌ – The उकारः is a single substitute for a ऋकारः and the following अकारः of the affix “ङसिँ” or “ङस्”। As per 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः, in the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter (“अ”, “इ”, “उ”) comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a “रँ” (“र्”, “ल्”) letter.
