Translation – ‘It is not only I that have been belittled by the luster of the faces of the lovely ladies, but even the water-lily has been belittled by the elegance of their eyes,’ thus elated the lotus with its singing characterized by the humming of the bees, as if danced on the rippling waves of water.

अलिविरुतैः is तृतीया-बहुवचनम् of the compound नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अलिविरुत’।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। As per 2-3-21 इत्थंभूतलक्षणे – A third case affix (‘टा’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भिस्’) is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) which denotes a characteristic mark indicating that someone/something is thus.

By 7-1-9 अतो भिस ऐस् – Following a अङ्गम् ending in the letter ‘अ’, the affix ‘भिस्’ is replaced by ‘ऐस्’। As per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य the entire affix ‘भिस्’ is replaced by ‘ऐस्’। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘ऐस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 6-1-88 वृद्धिरेचि

Questions:

1. Commenting on the example जटाभिस्तापस: (given in the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी under the सूत्रम् 2-3-21 इत्थंभूतलक्षणे) the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – जटाभिर्ज्ञाप्यं यत्तापसत्वं तद्विशिष्ट इत्यर्थः। Please explain.

2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix ‘क्त’ to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विरुत’ (used as part of the compound अलिविरुतैः)?

3. Can you spot the substitution ‘शतृँ’ (in the place of ‘लँट्’) in the verses?

4. What prevents the affix ‘क्त’ from taking the augment इट् in the form अपास्तम्?

5. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-1-124 ऋहलोर्ण्यत्‌ been used in the commentary?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Did you (sir) see the student with (his distinctive mark of) the water-pot?” Use the masculine/neuter प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कमण्डलु’ for ‘water-pot.’ Use the अव्ययम् ‘अपि’ to express interrogation.

Easy questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-75 अस्थिदधिसक्थ्यक्ष्णामनङुदात्तः been used in the verses?

2. Can you spot the affix श्यन् in the commentary?

  1. 1. Commenting on the example जटाभिस्तापस: (given in the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी under the सूत्रम् 2-3-21 इत्थंभूतलक्षणे) the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – जटाभिर्ज्ञाप्यं यत्तापसत्वं तद्विशिष्ट इत्यर्थः। Please explain.
Answer: जटाभिस्तापस: means an ascetic (who is characterized) by matted locks. The तत्त्वबोधिनी explains the meaning of this sentence as – (तद्विशिष्ट) One who is distinguished by (यत्तापसत्वम्) that asceticism (जटाभिर्ज्ञाप्यम्) which is to be recognized by (his) matted locks.

    2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix ‘क्त’ to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विरुत’ (used as part of the compound अलिविरुतैः)?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-114 नपुंसके भावे क्तः prescribes the affix ‘क्त’ in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विरुत’ – derived from the verbal root √रु (रु शब्दे २.२८) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘वि’।

By 3-3-114 नपुंसके भावे क्तः – The affix ‘क्त’ may be used following a verbal root to denote in the neuter gender the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state, without restriction to the time frame (past, present or future.)
Note: 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents the गुणादेशः for the ending letter ‘उ’ (of the अङ्गम् ‘रु’) which would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।

‘रुत’ is compounded with the उपसर्गः ‘वि’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
‘विरुत’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    3. Can you spot the substitution ‘शतृँ’ (in the place of ‘लँट्’) in the verses?
    Answer: The substitution ‘शतृँ’ (in the place of ‘लँट्’) occurs in the form गायत् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गायत्’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे प्रथामा-एकवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √गै (गै शब्दे १.
The affix ‘शतृँ’ is prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-2-126 लक्षणहेत्वोः क्रियायाः। Note: In the present example the action (गायत् – singing) constitutes a characteristic (लक्षणम्) of another action (ननर्त – danced.)

Please refer to the following post for derivation of the

    4. What prevents the affix ‘क्त’ from taking the augment इट् in the form अपास्तम्?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-2-15 यस्य विभाषा prevents the affix ‘क्त’ from taking the augment इट् in the form अपास्तम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अपास्त’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √अस् (असुँ क्षेपणे ४. १०६) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘अप’।

    The ending letter ‘उ’ of ‘असुँ’ is a इत् by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes elision by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Hence ‘असुँ’ is a उदित्।

The affix ‘त’ is prevented from taking the augment ‘इट्’ (which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः) by 7-2-15 यस्य विभाषा – If a verbal root optionally allows an augment इट् in some case, then following that verbal root a निष्ठा affix (ref. 1-1-26) is prohibited from taking the augment इट्। Note: 7-2-15 is applicable here because as per 7-2-56 उदितो वा – When following a verbal root which is उदित् (has the letter ‘उ’ as a इत्), the affix ‘क्त्वा’ optionally takes the augment इट्।

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-1-124 ऋहलोर्ण्यत्‌ been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-1-124 ऋहलोर्ण्यत्‌ has been used in the feminine form वाच्या – derived from the verbal root √वच् (वचँ परिभाषणे २. ५८).

Please see answer to question 4 in the following comment for derivation of वाच्या – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2013/02/22/अनिलेन-mis/#comment-18473

    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-75 अस्थिदधिसक्थ्यक्ष्णामनङुदात्तः has been used in the form अक्ष्णोः (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अक्षि’, षष्ठी-द्विवचनम्)।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। Note: 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘ओस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 7-1-75 अस्थिदधिसक्थ्यक्ष्णामनङुदात्तः – When a case affix – starting from the instrumental singular affix ‘टा’ – beginning with a vowel (अच्), follows, the bases ‘अस्थि’, ‘दधि’, ‘सक्थि’ and ‘अक्षि’ get the ‘अनँङ्’ replacement, which has the उदात्तः accent. By 1-1-53 ङिच्च, only the ending letter ‘इ’ of ‘अक्षि’ is replaced by ‘अनँङ्’।
By 6-4-134 अल्लोपोऽनः।
By 8-4-2 अट्कुप्वाङ्नुम्व्यवायेऽपि।

    2. Can you spot the affix श्यन् in the commentary?
    Answer: The affix श्यन् occurs in the form नृत्यति (स्म) – derived from the verbal root √नृत् (नृतीँ गात्रविक्षेपे #४.

By By 3-2-118 लट् स्मे। Note: This सूत्रम् is a अपवादः (exception) for 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिट्।
By 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन् – The affix ‘श्यन्’ is placed after the verbal roots belonging to the दिवादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुकम् affix that is used signifying the agent. Note: Since the सार्वधातुकम् affix ‘श्यन्’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्) by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। This allows 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to prevent 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च from applying.
