वपुषा is तृतीया-एकवचनम् of the नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वपुस्’। The नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वपुस्’ is formed from the verbal root √वप् (डुवपँ (टुवपँ) बीजसन्ताने | छेदनेऽपि १. ११५८) with the affix ‘उस्‌’ (prescribed by the उणादि-सूत्रम् 2-117 अर्तिपॄवपियजितनिधनितपिभ्यो नित्)। ‘वपुस्’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

(1) वपुस् + टा । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। As per 2-3-20 येनाङ्गविकारः – A third case affix (‘टा’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भिस्’) is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) which denotes a deformed body-part by which a deformation of the body is indicated.

(2) वपुस् + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) वपुषा । By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो: – The letter ‘स्’ is replaced by the cerebral ‘ष्’ when preceded either by a letter of the इण्-प्रत्याहार: or a letter of the क-वर्ग: (‘क्’, ‘ख्’, ‘ग्’, ‘घ्’, ‘ङ्’)। This substitution only takes place if the ‘स्’ is an आदेश: (substitute) or part of a प्रत्यय: (affix.)

5. Which कृत् affix is used to form the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘उपमा’ (used in the form उपमया (तृतीया-एकवचनम्) in the commentary)?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?

  1. 1. Where else (besides in वपुषा) has the सूत्रम् 2-3-20 येनाङ्गविकारः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-3-20 येनाङ्गविकारः is also used in the following form – मुखेन (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘मुख’, तृतीया-एकवचनम्)।

    2. Where has the वार्तिकम् (under 2-3-18 कर्तृकरणयोस्तृतीया) प्रकृत्यादिभ्य उपसङ्ख्यानम् been used in the verses?
    Answer: The वार्तिकम् (under 2-3-18 कर्तृकरणयोस्तृतीया) प्रकृत्यादिभ्य उपसङ्ख्यानम् has been used in the form तेजसा (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘तेजस्’, तृतीया-एकवचनम्)।

    3. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix अप् to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कर’ (used in the compound कराक्रान्तमहीभृत्)?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-57 ॠदोरप्‌ prescribes the affix अप् to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कर’ – derived from the verbal root √कॄ (कॄ विक्षेपे (निक्षेपे) ६. १४५) as follows –
कीर्यतेऽनेन = करः – a hand (that by which something is scattered) or
    कीर्यते = करः – a ray (that which is scattered)
Note: The word ‘कर’ has been used in the verses in both the above meanings.

कॄ + अप् । By 3-3-57 ॠदोरप्‌ – The affix अप् may be used following a verbal root ending in the letter ‘ॠ’ or a उवर्ण: (letter ‘उ’/‘ऊ’) to denote either (i) the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state or (ii) any कारक: except the agent of the action, provided the word so derived is a proper name.
    = कॄ + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = कर् + अ । By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः, 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः।
    = कर । ‘कर’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    4. From which verbal used is the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘हित’ (used in the commentary) derived?
    Answer: The verbal root √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके ३. ११) is used to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘हित’।

Please see the following post for derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘हित’ – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/12/18/अभिहितम्-nns/

    5. Which कृत् affix is used to form the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘उपमा’ (used in the form उपमया (तृतीया-एकवचनम्) in the commentary)?
    Answer: The कृत् affix ‘अङ्’ is used to form the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘उपमा’ – derived from the verbal root √मा (मा माने २. ५७, माङ् माने शब्दे च ३. ७, माङ् माने ४. ३७) preceded by the उपसरगः ‘उप’।

येनोपमीयते, या चोपमिति: = object of comparison or the act of comparing

उप मा + अङ् । By 3-3-106 आतश्चोपसर्गे – Following a verbal root which ends in the letter ‘आ’ and is in composition with a उपसर्गः (ref: 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे), the affix अङ् is used to denote in the feminine gender either (i) the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state or (ii) any कारक: except the agent of the action, provided the word so derived is a proper name.
    = उप मा + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = उप म् + अ । By 6-4-64 आतो लोप इटि च।
    = उपम । ‘उपम’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

Note: Since this प्रातिपदिकम् is used in the feminine gender we have to add the appropriate feminine affix (स्त्रीप्रत्यय:)।
    उपम + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।
    = उपम + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = उपमा । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“In terms of physique Rāvaṇa was twenty-armed.” Paraphrase to “By physique Rāvaṇa was twenty-armed.” Use the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विंशतिभुज’ for ‘twenty-armed.’
    Answer: वपुषा रावणः विंशतिभुजः बभूव = वपुषा रावणो विंशतिभुजो बभूव।

    मुख + टा । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्… ।
    = मुख + इन । By 7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः – Following a अङ्गम् ending in the letter ‘अ’, the affixes ‘टा’, ‘ङसिँ’ and ‘ङस्’ are replaced respectively by ‘इन’, ‘आत्’ and ‘स्य’।
    = मुखेन । By 6-1-87 आद्‌गुणः।
