चिकीर्षुः mNs

Today we will look at the form चिकीर्षुः mNs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 3.2.24.

Translation – I consider even those demons as devotees of the Lord, who had fixed their mind on the Lord of the three worlds through anger (born of animosity), and who beheld on the battle-field Garuḍa (son of the sage Kaśyapa) swooping on them, with Lord Viṣṇu (the Wielder of the discus Sudarśana) mounted on his back (24). Desirous of doing good to this earth the Lord was born of Vasudeva and Devakī in the prison-house of Kaṁsa (the chief of the Bhojas) in response to the prayer of Brahmā (the unborn) (25).

The सन्नन्त-धातुः “चिकीर्ष” is derived from √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८. १०).

As per 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा – In order to express wish/desire, the affix सन् is optionally prescribed after a verbal root which underlies the object of and shares the same agent with the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६.

By 6-4-16 अज्झनगमां सनि – When the affix सन् beginning with a झल् letter follows, there is an elongation of a verbal root which ends in a vowel, as well as of the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) and √गम् (“गम्”-आदेशः which comes in place of √इ (इङ् अध्ययने | नित्यमधिपूर्वः २. ४१) by 2-4-48 इङश्च)।

Note: The affix “स” is a कित् here by 1-2-9 इको झल् – The affix सन् is considered to be a कित् (having ककारः as a इत्) when it begins with a झल् letter and follows a verbal root that ends in a इक् letter. Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः from applying.

By 7-1-100 ॠत इद्धातोः – The ending ॠकारः of a verbal root that has the अङ्ग-सञ्ज्ञा is substituted by इकारः। By 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः, in the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter (“अ”, “इ”, “उ”) comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a “रँ” (“र्”, “ल्”) letter.

By 6-1-9 सन्यङोः – There is reduplication of the first portion – containing a single vowel – of a verbal root ending in the affix सन्/यङ् which is not already reduplicated. But if the verbal root (that has more than one vowel) begins with a vowel, then the reduplication is of the second portion – containing a single vowel.

By 7-4-62 कुहोश्चुः, in a reduplicate (अभ्यासः – ref. 6-1-4 पूर्वोऽभ्यासः), a letter of the कवर्गः or हकारः is replaced by a letter of the चवर्गः । The substitutions take place as per 1-1-50 स्थानेऽन्तरतमः

By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः – Of the consonants of a reduplicate (अभ्यासः – ref. 6-1-4 पूर्वोऽभ्यासः), only the one (if any) at the beginning is retained, the rest are elided.

By 8-2-77 हलि च – The penultimate (उपधा) इक् letter of a verbal root ending in a वकारः or रेफः is made दीर्घः, when followed by a हल् (consonant.)

By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:, the letter “स्” is replaced by the cerebral “ष्” when preceded either by a letter of the इण्-प्रत्याहार: or a letter of the क-वर्ग: (“क्”, “ख्”, “ग्”, “घ्”, “ङ्”)। This substitution only takes place if the “स्” is an आदेश: (substitute) or part of a प्रत्यय: (affix.)

Now we derive the प्रातिपदिकम् “चिकीर्षु” from the सन्नन्त-धातुः “चिकीर्ष”।

By 3-2-168 सनाशंसभिक्ष उः – The affix “उ” is prescribed after the following verbal roots to denote an agent who performs an action because of his nature/habit or sense of duty or skill:
i) any verbal root ending in the affix सन्
७१६) preceded by the उपसर्गः “आङ्”

By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः – When an आर्धधातुकम् affix follows, the अकारः at the end of a अङ्गम् is elided if the अङ्गम् ends in a अकार: at the time when the आर्धधातुकम् affix is prescribed.

Since the affix “उ” has the कृत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्, “चिकीर्षु” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। “चिकीर्षु” is an adjective which declines like “गुरु” in the masculine, “धेनु” in the feminine and “मधु” in the neuter.

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्
