पञ्चदशभिः mIp

Today we will look at the form पञ्चदशभिः  mIp from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 8.11.23.

। २३ ।। प्रावृट्कालीनं सूर्यम् ।। २४ ।।

Gita Press translation – Piercing Indra with fifteen large arrows furnished with hilts of gold, (the demon) Namuci roared on the field of the battle like a cloud charged with water (23). The demons covered Śakra (Indra) including his chariot and charioteer on all sides with a network of arrows (even) as clouds would obscure the sun in the rains (24).

(1) पञ्च च दश च = पञ्चदश – (five + ten =) fifteen.

(2) पञ्चन् जस् + दशन् जस् । By 2-2-29 चार्थे द्वन्द्वः – Two or more terms having the designation पदम् and standing in a relation expressible by ‘च’ (‘and’) may optionally compound to yield a compound called द्वन्द्वः।

(3) पञ्चन् जस् + दशन् जस् । Both the vowels (‘अ’) in ‘दशन्’ have the designation लघु as per the सूत्रम् 1-4-10 ह्रस्वं लघु। While in ‘पञ्चन्’ the first vowel ‘अ’ precedes the conjunct ‘ञ्च्’ and therefore does not have the designation लघु। It has the designation गुरु as per the सूत्रम् 1-4-11 संयोगे गुरु। Hence as per the वार्तिकम् ‘लघ्वक्षरं पूर्वम्‌’, ‘दशन्’ should have been placed in the prior position in this compound. But since ‘पञ्चन्’ denotes a smaller number it is placed in the prior position as per the वार्तिकम् (under 2-2-34 अल्पाच्तरम्‌) सङ्ख्याया अल्पीयस्याः पूर्वनिपातो वक्तव्यः – In a compound the term which denotes a smaller number is placed in the prior position.

Note: ‘पञ्चन् जस् + दशन् जस्’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.

(4) पञ्चन् + दशन् । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्। Now ‘पञ्चन्’ has the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्। This allows 8-2-7 to apply in the next step.

(5) पञ्चदशन् । By 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य – The ending letter ‘न्’ of a पदम् is dropped when the पदम् also has the designation प्रातिपदिकम्।

As per the सूत्रम् 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः, the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पञ्चदशन्’ is an adjective since the latter member ‘दशन्’ of the compound is an adjective. Here it is used in the masculine since पञ्चदशभिः is an adjective to the masculine noun महेषुभिः।

The विवक्षा is तृतीया-बहुवचनम्।

(6) पञ्चदशन् + भिस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘भिस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा। The अङ्गम् ‘पञ्चदशन्’ gets the designation पदम् here by 1-4-17 स्वादिष्वसर्वनामस्थाने। This allows 8-2-7 to apply in the next step.

(7) पञ्चदश + भिस् । By 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य – The ending letter ‘न्’ of a पदम् is dropped when the पदम् also has the designation प्रातिपदिकम्।

(8) पञ्चदशभिः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।

  1. 1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘स’ in the compound सतोय:?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-3-82 वोपसर्जनस्य prescribes the substitution ‘स’ in the compound सतोयः (प्रातिपदिकम् ’सतोय’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

    लौकिक-विग्रह: is –
    तोयेन सह (वर्तते तोयदः) = सतोयः (वर्तते तोयदः:) – (cloud charged) with water.
Note: The third case affix used in तोयेन is as per the सूत्रम् 2-3-19 सहयुक्तेऽप्रधाने।
The derivation of the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ’सतोय’ is similar to the derivation of the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ’सार्जुन’ as shown in the following post – https://avg-sanskrit.org/2015/12/07/सार्जुनः-mns
Except that step 5 is not relevant since the सूत्रम् 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः has no application here.
The gender of a बहुव्रीहि: compound matches that of which it qualifies. In the present example, सतोयः is used in the masculine since it is qualifying तोयदः, which is used in the masculine gender. It declines like राम-शब्द:।

    2. Which compound used in the verses is a नञ्-तत्पुरुष: compound?
    Answer: The compound असुराः (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘असुर’, प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्) is a नञ्-तत्पुरुष: compound.

    The लौकिक-विग्रहः is –
    न सुरः = असुरः – demon (opposite of a god)
Here the negation particle नञ्‌ conveys the sense of विरोध: – opposite of that which is being negated.
The derivation of the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘असुर’ is similar to the derivation of the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अपर्याप्त’ shown in answer to question 1 in the following comment – https://avg-sanskrit.org/2015/08/10/अब्राह्मणः-mns/#comment-35496
As per the सूत्रम् 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः, the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘असुर’ is masculine since the latter member ‘सुर’ of the compound is masculine. The compound declines like राम-शब्द:। प्रथमा-बहुवचनम् is असुराः।

Note: The compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘असुर’ may also be derived as a बहुव्रीहिः compound as follows –
अविद्यमाना सुरा यस्य सः = असुरः – one who is without nectar (which was distributed only to the gods and not to the demons.) Note: Normally सुरा means spirituous liquor but here it is used in the sense of nectar.

    अविद्यमाना सुँ + सुरा सुँ । By 2-2-24 अनेकमन्यपदार्थे।
Note: By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – the term ‘कृता जस्’ as well as ‘क्रिया जस्’ gets the designation उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-24 अनेकमन्यपदार्थे (which prescribes the compounding) the term अनेकम् ends in the nominative case. Hence 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ cannot help us in deciding which term to place in the prior position in the compound. But this allows 1-2-48 to apply below.
The adjective ‘अविद्यमाना सुँ’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-35 सप्तमीविशेषणे बहुव्रीहौ।
    Note: ‘अविद्यमाना सुँ + सुरा सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.
    = अविद्यमाना + सुरा । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।
    = अ + सुरा । By वार्तिकम् (under 2-2-24 अनेकमन्यपदार्थे) नञोऽस्त्यर्थानां वाच्यो वा चोत्तरपदलोपः।
Note: Compounding is already prescribed by the सूत्रम् 2-2-24 itself. It is only for the elision of the उत्तरपदम् (of the compound पूर्वपदम्) that this वार्तिकम् is necessary.
    = असुर । By 1-2-48 गोस्त्रियोरुपसर्जनस्य।

The gender of a बहुव्रीहि: compound matches that of which it qualifies. Since ’असुर’ is referring to a demon, it is used in the masculine. It declines like राम-शब्द:। प्रथमा-बहुवचनम् is असुराः।

    3. Is there an alternate form for आहत्य? (Consider the सूत्रम् 6-4-38 वा ल्यपि।)
Answer: No, there is no alternate form for आहत्य – derived from the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘आङ्’।

    हन् + क्त्वा । By 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले।
Note: Here the common agent of the actions आहत्य (having pierced) and व्यनदत् (roared) is नमुचिः। The earlier of the two actions is the action of ‘piercing’ which is denoted by √हन् and hence √हन् takes the affix ‘क्त्वा’।
Note: अव्ययकृतो भावे (from महाभाष्यम्) – कृत् affixes (such as ‘क्‍त्‍वा’) having the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा are used to denote भाव: (action) – and not the agent (ref. 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌) of the action.
    आङ् + हन् + क्त्वा । ‘हन् + क्त्वा’ is compounded with ‘आङ्’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
    = आङ् + हन् + ल्यप् । By 7-1-37 समासेऽनञ्पूर्वे क्त्वो ल्यप्‌। The entire term ‘क्त्वा’ is replaced by ‘ल्यप्’ as per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
Note: As per 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ, the substitution ‘ल्यप्’ (in place of the affix ‘क्त्वा’) inherits the property of being a कित् (having the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) affix with the designation of कृत् (by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्) and आर्धधातुकम् (by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।)
    = आ + हन् + य । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = आ + ह + य । As per 6-4-38 वा ल्यपि – When followed by the affix ल्यप्, there is an optional elision of the final nasal consonant of the verbal roots* which have अनुदात्त-स्वरः in the धातु-पाठः as well as the verbal root √वन् (वनँ शब्दे १. ५३३, वनँ सम्भक्तौ १. ५३४, वनुँ च नोच्यते १. ९१५) and the verbal roots belonging to the तनादि-गणः।
Note: * सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी – ‘यमिरमिनमिगमिहनिमन्यतयोऽनुदात्तोपदेशाः।’ The following six roots end in a nasal consonant and have a अनुदात्त-स्वरः in the धातु-पाठः।
The elision (prescribed by 6-4-38) is optional in the case of the verbal roots which end in the letter ‘म्’ and have अनुदात्त-स्वरः in the धातु-पाठः। In the remaining cases the elision is invariable (not optional.)
Since √हन् does not end in the letter ‘म्’ the elision of the final nasal is invariable (not optional.)
    = आ + ह तुँक् + य । By 6-1-71 ह्रस्वस्य पिति कृति तुक्, 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ।
    = आहत्य । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

    ‘आहत्य’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः।
    आहत्य + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
    = आहत्य । By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः।

    4. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-3-46 आन्महतः समानाधिकरणजातीययोः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-3-46 आन्महतः समानाधिकरणजातीययोः has been used in the form महेषुभिः (पुंलिङ्ग/स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘महेषु’, तृतीया-बहुवचनम्)।

    महान्/महती चासाविषुः = महेषु: – large arrow.

Derivation of the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘महेषु’ is similar to the derivation of the compound ‘महादेव’ as shown in the post – https://avg-sanskrit.org/2015/07/27/महादेव-mvs. Except that after step 6, the सूत्रम् 6-1-87 applies to give –
    महा + इषु = महेषु । By 6-1-87 आद्‍गुणः।
    Note: In the case of the derivation of the स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘महेषु’ the पूर्वपदम् (‘महती’) takes पुंवद्भाव: (‘महत्’) as per 6-3-42 पुंवत्‌ कर्मधारयजातीयदेशीयेषु, prior to applying 6-3-46 आन्महतः समानाधिकरणजातीययोः।

As per the सूत्रम् 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः, the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘महेषु’ is masculine/feminine since the latter member ‘इषु’ of the compound is masculine/feminine. The compound declines like गुरु/धेनु-शब्द:। तृतीया-बहुवचनम् is महेषुभिः।

    5. From which verbal root is the form विद्ध्वा (used in the commentary) derived?
Answer: The form विद्ध्वा is derived from the verbal root √व्यध् (व्यधँ ताडने ४. ७८).

    व्यध् + क्त्वा । By 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले।
Note: Here the common agent of the actions विद्ध्वा (having pierced) and व्यनदत् (roared) is नमुचिः। The earlier of the two actions is the action of ‘piercing’ which is denoted by √व्यध् and hence √व्यध् takes the affix ‘क्त्वा’।
Note: अव्ययकृतो भावे (from महाभाष्यम्) – the कृत् affixes (such as ‘क्‍त्‍वा’) having the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा are used to denote भाव: (action) – and not the agent (ref. 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌) of the action.
    = व्यध् + त्वा । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prevents the affix ‘त्वा’ from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
    Note: The affix ‘क्त्वा’ is a कित् (has the ।etter ‘क्’ as a इत्)। This allows 6-1-16 ग्रहिज्यावयिव्यधिवष्टिविचतिवृश्चतिपृच्छतिभृज्जतीनां ङिति च to apply in the next step.
    = व् इ अ ध् + त्वा । By 6-1-16 ग्रहिज्यावयिव्यधिवष्टिविचतिवृश्चतिपृच्छतिभृज्जतीनां ङिति च – The verbal roots √ग्रह (ग्रहँ उपादाने ९. ४) take सम्प्रसारणम् (ref. 1-1-45) when followed by an affix which is a कित् (has the ।etter ‘क्’ as a इत्) or a ङित् (has the ।etter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्)।
    = विध् + त्वा । By 6-1-108 सम्प्रसारणाच्च।
    = विध् + ध्वा । By 8-2-40 झषस्तथोर्धोऽधः।
    = विद् + ध्वा । By 8-4-53 झलां जश् झशि।
    = विद्ध्वा ।

    ‘विद्ध्वा’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः।
    विद्ध्वा + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
    = विद्ध्वा । By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“There are fifteen days in every fortnight.” Use the masculine noun ‘पक्ष’ for ‘fortnight.’
    Answer: प्रतिपक्षम् पञ्चदश दिनानि सन्ति = प्रतिपक्षं पञ्चदश दिनानि सन्ति।
    Note: प्रतिपक्षम् is a अव्ययीभाव: compound with the following विग्रहः –
    पक्षे पक्षे = प्रतिपक्षम् = in fortnight after fortnight = in every fortnight
The derivation of the compound प्रतिपक्षम् is similar to the derivaiton of the compound प्रतिक्षणम् as shown in the answer to question 4 in the following comment – https://avg-sanskrit.org/2015/04/27/पराधीनम्-mas-nas/#comment-35230

    Easy questions:
    1. Can you spot the augment ‘अट्’ in the verses?
Answer: The augment अट् occurs in the verses in the form व्यनदत् – derived from the verbal root √नद् (णदँ अव्यक्ते शब्दे १. ५६).
Please see answer to easy question 1 in the following comment for derivation of the form व्यनदत् – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2013/01/04/सहिष्णुम्-mas/#comment-13553

    2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘उस्’ in the form छादयामासु:?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः prescribes the substitution ‘उस्’ in the form छादयामासु: – derived from the verbal root √छद् (छदँ अपवारणे १०. ४८१).

    छद् + णिच् । By 3-1-25 सत्यापपाशरूपवीणातूलश्लोकसेनालोमत्वचवर्मवर्णचूर्णचुरादिभ्यो णिच्। ‘णिच्’ gets आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।
    = छद् + इ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = छाद् + इ । By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।
    = छादि । ’छादि’ gets the धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

    The विवक्षा is लिँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्।
    छादि + लिँट् । By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
    = छादि + आम् + लिँट् । वार्त्तिकम् (under 3-1-35) कास्यनेकाच आम् वक्तव्यो लिँटि।
    = छादय् + आम् + लिँट् । By 6-4-55 अयामन्ताल्वाय्येत्न्विष्णुषु।
    = छादयाम् । By 2-4-81 आमः।
    = छादयाम् + सुँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।

    = छादयाम् + अस् + झि । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्।
    = छादयाम् + अस् + उस् । By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः – When they come in place of लिँट्, the nine परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: – ‘तिप्’, ‘तस्’, ‘झि’, ‘सिप्’, ‘थस्’, ‘थ’, ‘मिप्’, ‘वस्’ and ‘मस्’ – are substituted by ‘णल्’, ‘अतुस्’, ‘उस्’, ‘थल्’, ‘अथुस्’, ‘अ’, ‘णल्’, ‘व’ and ‘म’ respectively (ref. 1-3-10 यथासंख्यमनुदेशः समानाम्।)
    Note: 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of the affix ‘उस्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
    = छादयाम् + अस् अस् + उस् । By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
    = छादयाम् + आस् अस् + उस् । By 7-4-70 अत आदेः।
    = छादयाम् + आ अस् + उस् । By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
    = छादयामासुस् । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः।
    = छादयामासुः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।
