अग्निसदृशम् nAs

Today we will look at the form अग्निसदृशम्  nAs from श्रीमद्-वाल्मीकि-रामायणम् 3.51.14.

Translation – The king of birds, who was endowed with great energy, also broke with his wings Rāvaṇa’s coat of mail, blazing like fire (14). The mighty bird further killed in the course of the encounter the celebrated swift-going heavenly mules of Rāvaṇa, endowed with the heads of fiends and protected by breast-plates of gold (15). Jaṭāyu presently smashed the huge chariot as well (of Rāvaṇa) provided with a pole to which the yoke is fixed and flaming like fire, which could go wherever one liked and whose frame looked charming with its steps of gems (16). Jaṭāyu also knocked down with vehemence the canopy (over the seat of Rāvaṇa) shining as the full moon, along with the whisks as also with the ogres holding them (17).

Note: The सूत्रम् 2-3-72 तुल्यार्थैरतुलोपमाभ्यां तृतीयान्यतरस्याम्‌ justifies the use of a third case affix following the प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) ‘अग्नि’ which is co-occurring with ‘सदृश’।

By 2-1-31 पूर्वसदृशसमोनार्थकलहनिपुणमिश्रश्लक्ष्णैः – A पदम् ending in a third case affix optionally compounds with (a syntactically related पदम् composed by adding a सुँप् affix to) any one of the following and the resulting compound gets the designation तत्पुरुष: –
i) ‘पूर्व’ (prior)
ii) ‘सदृश’ (like/similar)
iii) ‘सम’ (equal to)
iv) ‘ऊनार्थ’ – ‘ऊन’ (less) or any of its synonyms
v) ‘कलह’ (quarrel)
vi) ‘निपुण’ (skillful)
vii) ‘मिश्र’ (mixed)
viii) ‘श्लक्ष्ण’ (gentle/polished.)

See question 1.

(3) By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – the term ‘अग्नि टा’ gets the designation उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-1-31 (which prescribes the compounding) the term तृतीया (which comes as अनुवृत्ति: from 2-1-30 तृतीया तत्कृतार्थेन गुणवचनेन) ends in the nominative case. Hence ‘अग्नि टा’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ should be placed in the prior position.

Note: ‘अग्नि टा + सदृश सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.

By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

As per the सूत्रम् 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः, the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अग्निसदृश’ is neuter here since the latter member ‘सदृश’ of the compound is used here in the neuter. (The entire compound is qualifying शरावरम्।)

The विवक्षा is द्वितीया-एकवचनम्।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।

By 7-1-24 अतोऽम् – The affixes ‘सुँ’ and ‘अम्’ that follow a neuter अङ्गम् ending in the short vowel ‘अ’ take ‘अम्’ as their replacement. Note: 7-1-24 is required here to prevent 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्‌ from applying.
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of the affix ‘अम्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

  1. 1. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-1-31 पूर्वसदृशसमोनार्थकलहनिपुणमिश्रश्लक्ष्णैः (used in step 2) the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – इह समसदृशाभ्यां योगे ‘२-३-७२ तुल्यार्थैरतुलोपमाभ्यां तृतीयान्यतरस्याम्‌’ इति तृतीया। Please explain.
The सूत्रम् 2-3-72 justifies the use of a third case affix following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) co-occurring with ‘सम’ or ‘सदृश’। The use of a third case affix following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) co-occurring with any one of the other terms ‘पूर्व’ etc mentioned in the सूत्रम् 2-1-31 पूर्वसदृशसमोनार्थकलहनिपुणमिश्रश्लक्ष्णैः may be justified by the very fact that this सूत्रम् 2-1-31 prescribes compounding between a पदम् ending in a third case affix and ‘पूर्व’ etc. Or the सूत्रम् 2-3-23 हेतौ may be used to justify the third case affix.

    2. In which sense has the third case affix been used in the form पक्षाभ्याम् used in the verses?
    i) कर्तरि
    ii) करणे
    iii) हेतौ
    iv) None of the above
Answer: The third case affix in the form पक्षाभ्याम् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पक्ष’, तृतीया-द्विवचनम्) has been used in the sense of करणे as per the सूत्रम् 2-3-18 कर्तृकरणयोस्तृतीया – A third case affix (‘टा’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भिस्’) is used to denote कर्ता (the doer of the action) as well as करणम् (the instrument of the action) provided the doer/instrument has not been expressed otherwise.
In the present example ‘पक्ष’ (wing) is the instrument of the action of breaking (Rāvaṇa’s coat of mail).

    3. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-3-36 सप्तम्यधिकरणे च been used in the verses?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-3-36 सप्तम्यधिकरणे च has been used in the verses in the form समरे (पुंलिङ्ग/नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘समर’, सप्तमी-एकवचनम्) to prescribe the seventh case affix.
In the present example, ‘समर’ (encounter) is the कारकम् (participant in the action) which denotes the location/support – via the agent बली (the mighty bird Jaṭāyu) – of the action जघान (killed) subsisting in the agent. Hence ‘समर’ gets the designation अधिकरणम् (location) by the सूत्रम् 1-4-45 आधारोऽधिकरणम् – That कारकम् (participant in the action) which denotes the location/support – via the agent/object – of an action subsisting in the agent/object is called अधिकरणम् (location.)
And hence the term ‘समर’ takes a seventh case affix as per the सूत्रम् 2-3-36 सप्तम्यधिकरणे च – A seventh case affix (‘ङि’, ‘ओस्’, ‘सुप्’) is used to denote अधिकरणम् (location), provided it has not been expressed otherwise.

    4. In the verses can you spot a word in which the कृत् affix ‘ड’ has been used?
    Answer: The affix ‘ड’ occurs in the form कामगम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कामग’, पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) and is derived using the वार्तिकम् (under 3-2-48 अन्तात्यन्ताध्वदूरपारसर्वानन्तेषु डः) अन्यत्रापि दृश्यत इति वक्तव्यम्।

The (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कामग’ is derived as follows:
    काम + टा + गम् + ड । By the वार्तिकम् (under 3-2-48 अन्तात्यन्ताध्वदूरपारसर्वानन्तेषु डः) अन्यत्रापि दृश्यत इति वक्तव्यम् – The affix ‘ड’ may be used after the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७) when in composition with a उपपदम् which could be other than those specifically listed in 3-2-48 अन्तात्यन्ताध्वदूरपारसर्वानन्तेषु डः।
Note: In the above वार्तिकम्, the term अन्यत्र is in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘काम + टा’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
By 6-4-143 टेः। Note: The अङ्गम् does not have the भ-सञ्ज्ञा here. But still टि-लोप: is done because otherwise no purpose would be served by having the letter ‘ड्’ as a इत् in the affix ‘ड’।
    We form a compound between ‘काम + टा’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘ग’ by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्।
Note: Here ‘काम + टा’ is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ् (which prescribes the compounding) the term उपपदम् ends in the nominative case. In the compound, ‘काम + टा’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ should be placed in the prior position.
    The compound ‘काम + टा + ग’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।
By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।

    5. Which कृत् affix is used to derive the form ग्राहिभि: (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘ग्राहिन्’, पुंलिङ्गे तृतीया-बहुवचनम्) used in the verses?
    Answer: The कृत् affix ‘णिनिँ’ is used to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘ग्राहिन्’ – derived from the verbal root √ग्रह् (ग्रहँ उपादाने ९.७१ ) as follows –

By 3-1-134 नन्दिग्रहिपचादिभ्यो ल्युणिन्यचः – The affix ‘ल्यु’ may be used after a verbal root belonging to the group headed by ‘नन्दि’; the affix ‘णिनिँ’ may be used after a verbal root belonging to the group headed by ‘ग्रहि’; and the affix ‘अच्’ may be used after a verbal root belonging to the group headed by ‘पच्’।
Note: As per 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌, these affixes are used to denote the agent of the action.
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।
‘ग्राहिन्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of the affix ‘भिस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
Here the अङ्गम् ‘ग्राहिन्’ gets the designation पदम् by 1-4-17 स्वादिष्वसर्वनामस्थाने। This allows 8-2-7 to apply in the next step.
By 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“There has not been and will not be a warrior like Arjuna.”

    Easy questions:
    1. Can you spot the affix ‘श्नु’ in the verses?
Answer: The affix ‘श्नु’ occurs in the form व्यधुनोत् – derived from the verbal root √धु (धुञ् कम्पने ५. ९).

By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ्।
Note: The affix ‘तिप्’ has the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्। This allows 3-1-73 to apply below.
By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च।
By 3-1-73 स्वादिभ्यः श्नुः – The affix ‘श्नु’ is placed after the verbal roots of the स्वादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुकम् affix that is used signifying the agent. This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ ।
Note: By 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्, the affix ‘नु’ becomes ङिद्वत् (behaves like having the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्)। Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents the गुणादेशः for the letter ‘उ’ (of the अङ्गम् ‘धु’) which would have been done by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।

    ‘वि’ is the उपसर्ग: (ref.
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    2. Why doesn’t the सूत्रम् 2-4-52 अस्तेर्भूः apply in the form पातयामास?
Answer: The form पातयामास is derived from the causative form of the verbal root √पत् (पतॢँ गतौ १. ९७९) as follows –

By 3-1-26 हेतुमति च।
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।
    ‘पाति’ gets धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

    The विवक्षा is लिँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग: (हेतुमति), प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    पाति + लिँट् । By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
By वार्त्तिकम् (under 3-1-35) कास्यनेकाच आम् वक्तव्यो लिँटि, when लिँट् follows, the affix आम् is prescribed after the धातु: √कास् (कासृँ शब्दकुत्सायाम् १. ७१०) as also after any धातु: that is अनेकाच् (has more than one vowel.)
By 6-4-55 अयामन्ताल्वाय्येत्न्विष्णुषु।
By 2-4-81 आमः।
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…..।
By 2-4-81 आमः।
By 3-1-40 कृञ् चानुप्रयुज्यते लिटि, following a term ending in the affix ‘आम्’, one of the following is annexed:
    i. १०) followed by लिँट्
    ii. १) followed by लिँट् or
    iii. ६०) followed by लिँट्।
Here we consider the case where √अस् is annexed.
Note: As per 2-4-52 अस्तेर्भूः – When the intention is to add a आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय:, √अस् (असँ भुवि २. ६०) is replaced by ‘भू’। Here the conditions for 2-4-52 are satisfied since the affix लिँट् is a आर्धधातुक-प्रत्ययः by 3-4-115 लिट् च। If √अस् were to be replaced by ‘भू’, then specifying √अस् (as part of the प्रत्याहारः ‘कृञ्’) in 3-1-40 कृञ् चानुप्रयुज्यते लिटि would serve no purpose. That’s why √अस् when subjoined as an auxiliary (अनुप्रयुज्यमान:) does not take the substitution ‘भू’।
By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य। Note: As per 1-1-59 द्विर्वचनेऽचि, we apply 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य before applying 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।
By 7-4-70 अत आदेः।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।
