कबन्धेभ्यः m-Ab-p

Today we will look at the form कबन्धेभ्यः m-Ab-p from रघुवंशम् verse 12-49.

Translation – In that huge army of the demons, cut off by Rāma’s arrows, nothing else than head-less trunks was seen standing.

कबन्धेभ्यः is पञ्चमी-बहुवचनम् of the पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कबन्ध’। (Note: ‘कबन्ध’ is also used नपुंसकलिङ्गे)।

(1) कबन्ध + भ्यस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। As per the सूत्रम् 2-3-29 अन्यारादितरर्तेदिक्‌छब्दाञ्चूत्तरपदाजाहियुक्ते – A fifth case affix (‘ङसिँ’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भ्यस्’) is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) co-occurring with any one of the following:
i) ‘अन्य’ (other) or a synonym of ‘अन्य’
ii) ‘आरात्’ (far or near)
iii) ‘इतर’ (other) Note: इतरग्रहणं प्रपञ्चार्थम् । The mention of ‘इतर’ is only an elaboration since ‘इतर’ is a synonym of ‘अन्य’ already mentioned above
iv) ‘ऋते’ (without)
v) A word that denotes a direction (in space or time) even if it is a (compound) word ending in the verbal root √अञ्च् (अञ्चुँ गतिपूजनयोः १. २१५). Note: अञ्चूत्तरपदस्य दिक्शब्दत्वेऽपि ‘षष्ठ्यतसर्थ-’ इति षष्ठीं बाधितुं पृथग्ग्रहणम्। Why has पाणिनि: separately mentioned (compound) words ending in the verbal root √अञ्च् (अञ्चुँ गतिपूजनयोः १. २१५) when they are words which denote direction? The reason is to prevent the sixth case affix which would have been prescribed by 2-3-30 षष्ठ्यतसर्थप्रत्ययेन।
vi) A word that ends in the affix ‘आच्’ (ref. 5-3-36 दक्षिणादाच्)
vii) A word that ends in the affix ‘आहि’ (ref. 5-3-37 आहि च दूरे)

Note: 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of the affix ‘भ्यस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

(2) कबन्धे + भ्यस् । By 7-3-103 बहुवचने झल्येत् – the ending letter ‘अ’ of a अङ्गम् changes to ‘ए’ when followed by a plural सुँप् affix beginning with a झल् letter.

(3) कबन्धेभ्य: । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-3-29 अन्यारादितरर्तेदिक्‌छब्दाञ्चूत्तरपदाजाहियुक्ते (used in step 1) been used in the first twenty verses of Chapter Fourteen of the गीता?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-3-29 अन्यारादितरर्तेदिक्‌छब्दाञ्चूत्तरपदाजाहियुक्ते has been used in the following verse in the form गुणेभ्यः (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गुण’, पञ्चमी-बहुवचनम्)।
    नान्यं गुणेभ्यः कर्तारं यदा द्रष्टानुपश्यति |
    गुणेभ्यश्च परं वेत्ति मद्भावं सोऽधिगच्छति || 14-19||

    Here the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गुण’ is co-occurring with अन्यम् (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अन्य’, पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)। Therefore ‘गुण’ takes the fifth case affix as per the सूत्रम् 2-3-29 अन्यारादितरर्तेदिक्‌छब्दाञ्चूत्तरपदाजाहियुक्ते।

    2. Commenting on the the सूत्रम् 2-3-29 अन्यारादितरर्तेदिक्‌छब्दाञ्चूत्तरपदाजाहियुक्ते the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – अन्य इत्यर्थग्रहणम्। Please explain.
Answer: The mention of ‘अन्य’ in the सूत्रम् 2-3-29 अन्यारादितरर्तेदिक्‌छब्दाञ्चूत्तरपदाजाहियुक्ते refers to not just the specific word ‘अन्य’ but to any word used in the meaning of ‘अन्य’। Hence this सूत्रम् applies even in those instances where a synonym of ‘अन्य’ is used. For example – अन्यो भिन्नोऽपरो वा कृष्णात् – (Someone) other than Śrī Kṛṣṇa. (भिन्न: and अपर: are synonyms for अन्य:।)

    3. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-4-40 द्यतिस्यतिमास्थामित्ति किति been used in the verse?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-4-40 द्यतिस्यतिमास्थामित्ति किति is used in the form उत्थितम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘उत्थित’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।
    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘उत्थ्थित/उत्थित’ is derived from the verbal root √स्था (ष्ठा गतिनिवृत्तौ १. १०७७) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘उद्’।
    स्था + क्त । By 3-2-102 निष्ठा। Note: Since the verbal root √स्था is used intransitively (अकर्मक:) the affix ‘क्त’ denotes the agent (कर्तरि) here as per 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च।
    = स्था + त । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: Here 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prevents the affix ‘त’ from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by the सूत्रम् 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
    = स्थित । By 7-4-40 द्यतिस्यतिमास्थामित्ति किति – The letter ‘इ’ is substituted in place of the final letter of the verbal roots √दो (दो अवखण्डने ४. ४३), √सो (षो अन्तकर्मणि ४. ४२), √मा (मा माने २. ५७, माङ् माने शब्दे च ३. ७, माङ् माने ४. ३७, मेङ् प्रणिदाने १. १११६) and √स्था (ष्ठा गतिनिवृत्तौ १. १०७७) when followed by an affix which is कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) and begins with the letter ‘त्’। As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य only the ending letter ‘आ’ of the अङ्गम् ‘स्था’ is replaced by the letter ‘इ’।
    उद् + स्थित । ‘स्थित’ is compounded with the उपसर्गः ‘उद्’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
    = उत् स्थित । By 8-4-55 खरि च।
    = उत् थ्थित । By 8-4-61 उदः स्थास्तम्भोः पूर्वस्य, 1-1-54 आदेः परस्य, 1-1-50 स्थानेऽन्तरतमः।
    = उत्थित/उत्थ्थित । By 8-4-65 झरो झरि सवर्णे।
‘उत्थित/उत्थ्थित’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। ‘उत्थित/उत्थ्थित’ is an adjective which declines like वन-शब्दः in the neuter gender.

    4. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘न्’ in the form छिन्ने used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-2-42 रदाभ्यां निष्ठातो नः पूर्वस्य च दः prescribes the substitution ‘न्’ in the form छिन्ने (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘छिन्न’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे सप्तमी-एकवचनम्)।
Please see the following post for the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘छिन्न’ –

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Yudhiṣṭhira did not speak anything other than the truth.”
    Answer: युधिष्ठिरः सत्यात् अन्यत् न किञ्चन उवाच = युधिष्ठिरः सत्यादन्यन्न किञ्चनोवाच।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Without Śrī Kṛṣṇa there is no happiness.”
    Answer: श्रीकृष्णात् ऋते न सुखम् = श्रीकृष्णादृते न सुखम्।

    Easy questions:

    1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘स्मिन्’ in the form तस्मिन्?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-15 ङसिङ्योः स्मात्स्मिनौ prescribes the substitution ‘स्मिन्’ in the form तस्मिन् (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘तद्’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे सप्तमी-एकवचनम्)।
Please see answer to easy question 2 in the following comment for the derivation – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/01/25/मेनिरे-3ap-लिँट्/#comment-3158

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-4-81 लिटस्तझयोरेशिरेच् been used in the verse?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-4-81 लिटस्तझयोरेशिरेच् has been used in the form ददृशे – derived from √दृश् (दृशिँर् प्रेक्षणे १. ११४३).

    The विवक्षा is लिँट्, कर्मणि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    दृश् + लिँट् । By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट।
    = दृश् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = दृश् + त । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः।
    Note: The affix ‘त’ gets the आर्धधतुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-115 लिट् च here. Therefore the सूत्रम् 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक् does not apply.
    = दृश् + एश् । By 3-4-81 लिटस्तझयोरेशिरेच्, when they come in place of लिँट्, the affixes ‘त’ and ‘झ’ take the substitutions ‘एश्’ and ‘इरेच्’ respectively. As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल् शित् सर्वस्य, the entire term ‘त’ is replaced by ‘एश्’।
    = दृश् + ए । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = दृश् दृश् + ए । By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
    = दर्श् दृश् + ए । By 7-4-66 उरत्‌, 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः।
    = द दृश् + ए । By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
    Note: ‘एश्’ is a कित्-प्रत्यय: here as per 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्। Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents 7-3-86 पुगन्‍तलघूपधस्‍य च from applying.
    = ददृशे ।
