ऋषिभिः mIp

Today we will look at the form ऋषिभिः-mIp from from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 3.24.9.

तत्कर्दमाश्रमपदं सरस्वत्या परिश्रितम् । स्वयम्भूः साकमृषिभिर्मरीच्यादिभिरभ्ययात् ।। ३-२४-९ ।।

Gita Press translation – Brahmā (the self-born) went along with Marīci and the other sages to that (celebrated) hermitage of Kardama surrounded by the river Saraswatī (9). Brahmā, who is naturally possessed of true wisdom, already knew that the Lord, who is no other than the supreme Brahma, had descended through pure Sattva for imparting the knowledge of the Sāṅkhya system of philosophy (which determines the nature of the fundamental principles), O vanquisher of foes (10).

ऋषिभिः is तृतीया-बहुवचनम् of the पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘ऋषि’।

(1) ऋषि + भिस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। As per 2-3-19 सहयुक्तेऽप्रधाने – A third case affix (‘टा’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भिस्’) is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) co-occurring with सह or a synonym of सह, provided the प्रातिपदिकम् does not denote the primary (agent.) Note: ‘सहेनाप्रधाने’ इत्येव वाच्ये युक्तग्रहणादर्थग्रहणम्। सहार्थकशब्दा: सह–साकं–सार्धमित्यादय:। If पाणिनि: did not want to include the synonyms of सह he could have composed the सूत्रम् as सहेनाप्रधाने। The fact that he has included युक्ते in the सूत्रम् tells us that it applies not only when सह itself is used but also when a synonym of सह is used. The synonyms of सह are साकम्, सार्धम्, समम् etc. In the present example ऋषिभिः is co-occurring with साकम् which is a synonym of सह।

Note: 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of the affix ‘भिस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

(2) ऋषिभिः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-3-19 सहयुक्तेऽप्रधाने been used in Chapter Thirteen of the गीता?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-3-19 सहयुक्तेऽप्रधाने has been used in the form गुणैः (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गुण’, तृतीया-बहुवचनम्) in Chapter Thirteen of the गीता in the following verse –

    य एवं वेत्ति पुरुषं प्रकृतिं च गुणैः सह |
    सर्वथा वर्तमानोऽपि न स भूयोऽभिजायते || 13-24||

    2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘वसुँ’ (in place of ‘शतृँ’) in the form विद्वान्?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-36 विदेः शतुर्वसुः prescribes the substitution ‘वसुँ’ (in place of ‘शतृँ’) in the form विद्वान् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विद्वस्’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

Please refer to the following post for derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विद्वस्’ – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/12/31/विद्वान्-mns/

    3. Can you spot the affix ‘क्तवतुँ’ in the commentary?
    Answer: The affix ‘क्तवतुँ’ occurs in the form कृतवान् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कृतवत्’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

Please refer to answer to question 5 in the following comment for the derivation – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/12/20/ऊषिवान्-mns/#comment-10505

    4. In which word in the commentary has the affix सिँच् taken the लुक् elision?
    Answer: The affix सिँच् has taken the लुक् elision in the form अभ्यधात् – derived from the verbal root √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके ३. ११).

Please refer to answer to question 4 in the following comment for the derivation – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/04/27/अरोदीः-2as-लुँङ्/#comment-3676

    5. What is an alternate form for आगत्य (used in the commentary)?
Answer: The alternate form for आगत्य is आगम्य

The verbal root used in आगत्य/आगम्य is √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७). Note: Here the common agent of the actions आगत्य (having come) and कृतवान् (did) is स्वयम्भूः (Brahmā.)

Derivation of आगम्य is similar to that of the form उपसङ्गम्य shown in the following post – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2013/06/21/उपसङ्गम्य-ind/
The only difference is that while in the post the उपसर्गौ ‘उप’ and ‘सम्’ are used, in the current example the उपसर्गः ‘आङ्’ is used.

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Śrī Kṛṣṇa sported with the gopīs on the bank of the Yamunā.”
    Answer: श्रीकृष्णः गोपीभिः सह यमुनायाः तटे चिक्रीड = श्रीकृष्णो गोपीभिः सह यमुनायास्तटे चिक्रीड ।

    Easy questions:

    1. What prevents the सूत्रम् 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य from deleting the letter ‘न्’ at the end of (हे) शत्रुहन्?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-2-8 न ङिसम्बुद्ध्योः prevents the सूत्रम् 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य from deleting the letter ‘न्’ at the end of (हे) शत्रुहन् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शत्रुहन्’, पुंलिङ्गे सम्बुद्धिः)।

    (हे) शत्रुहन् + सुँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। Here ‘सुँ’ has सम्बुद्धि-सञ्ज्ञा by 2-3-49 एकवचनं सम्बुद्धिः।
    Note: 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य is stopped by 8-2-8 न ङिसम्बुद्ध्योः – The letter ‘न्’ does not take elision (लोपः), when ‘ङि’ or the सम्बुद्धिः affix follows.

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-2-36 व्रश्चभ्रस्जसृजमृजयजराजभ्राजच्छशां षः been applied in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-2-36 व्रश्चभ्रस्जसृजमृजयजराजभ्राजच्छशां षः has been used in the form स्वराट् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘स्वराज्’, प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

    स्वराज् + सुँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
By 8-2-36 व्रश्चभ्रस्जसृजमृजयजराजभ्राजच्छशां षः – The seven verbal roots listed – √व्रश्च् (ओँव्रश्चूँ छेदने ६. १२), √भ्रस्ज् (भ्रस्जँ पाके ६. ४), √सृज् (सृजँ विसर्गे ६. १५०), √मृज् (मृजूँ शुद्धौ २. ६१), √यज् (यजँ देवपूजासङ्गतिकरणदानेषु १. ११५७), √राज् (राजृँ दीप्तौ १. ९५६) and √भ्राज् (टुभ्राजृँ दीप्तौ १. ९५७) – and terms ending in the letter ‘छ्’ or the letter ‘श्’ get the letter ‘ष्’ as a replacement, when they are at the end of a पदम् or are followed by a झल् letter.
Note: As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य only the ending letter is replaced by the letter ‘ष्’।
    = स्वराड् । By 8-2-39 झलां जशोऽन्ते।
    = स्वराड्/स्वराट् । By 8-4-56 वाऽवसाने।
