हित्वा ind

Today we will look at the form हित्वा ind from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 10.25.4.

Gita Press translation – Even as those devoted to rituals seek to cross the ocean of mundane existence by recourse to sacrificial performances consisting of rituals passing for boats in name alone and (wholly) undependable, giving up the signs of self-realization, so having taken shelter under Kṛṣṇa – a garrulous, foolish, arrogant and ignorant mortal, though thinking himself to be a great scholar – the cowherds have given offense to me (4-5).

हित्वा is derived from the verbal root √हा (ओँहाक् त्यागे ३. ९) .

By 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले – The affix ‘क्त्वा’ is used following a verbal root which denotes a prior action relative to that of another verbal root, provided the agent of both the actions is the same.
Note: Here the common agent of both the actions हित्वा (giving up) and तितीर्षन्ति (seek to cross) is ‘those devoted to rituals’. The earlier of the two actions is the action of giving up which is denoted by √हा and hence √हा takes the affix ‘क्त्वा’।
Note: अव्ययकृतो भावे (from महाभाष्यम्) – कृत् affixes (such as ‘क्त्वा’) having the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा are used to denote भाव: (action) – and not the agent (ref. 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌) of the action.

Note: Here 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prohibits the affix ‘त्वा’ from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः

By 7-4-43 जहातेश्च क्त्वि – When followed by the affix ‘क्त्वा’ the verbal root √हा (ओँहाक् त्यागे ३. ९) takes the substitution ‘हि’। The entire term ‘हा’ is replaced by ‘हि’ as per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य

1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।

‘हित्वा’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds get the name प्रातिपदिकम्।
‘हित्वा’ also gets the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः – Words ending in the affixes ‘क्त्वा’, ‘तोसुन्’ and ‘कसुन्’ are designated as indeclinables.

(4) हित्वा + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः – The feminine affix आप् and सुँप् affixes that are prescribed after a अव्ययम् take the लुक् elision.

Questions:

1. Where has हित्वा been used in Chapter Two of the गीता? Identify the common doer and the later action done by the common doer.

2. From which two other verbal roots (besides √हा (ओँहाक् त्यागे ३. ९)) can हित्वा be derived?

3. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 7-4-43 जहातेश्च क्त्वि (used in step 3), the काशिका says – जहातेर्निर्देशाद् जिहातेर्न भवति। Please explain.

4. Can you spot the affix ‘खश्’ in the commentary?

5. Which कृत् affix is used to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘ज्ञ’ used in the commentary?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Abandoning Ayodhyā, Lakṣmaṇa went to the forest to serve Śrī Rāma.”

Easy questions:

1. Can you spot the substitution ‘रिङ्’ in the commentary?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-89 उतो वृद्धिर्लुकि हलि been used in the commentary?

गत्वा ind

Today we will look at the form गत्वा ind from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 9.14.43.

Gita Press translation – Leaving the vessel in the forest, he returned home and began contemplating on Urvaśī at night. (In the meantime) when the Tretā age commenced (at the end of Satyayuga), the knowledge of the science of rituals (as represented by the three Vedas – Ṛk, Yajus and Sāma), dawned on his mind (43). Going to the spot where he had left the vessel, and perceiving (there) a peepul tree sprouting from inside a Śamī tree, he hewed out of it a pair of Araṇis (churning sticks) for kindling fire by attrition (44).

गत्वा is derived from the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १.

By 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले – The affix ‘क्‍त्‍वा’ is used following a verbal root which denotes a prior action relative to that of another verbal root, provided the agent of both the actions is the same.
Note: Here the common agent of both the actions (returning and contemplating) is स: (he.) The earlier of the two actions is the action of returning which is denoted by √गम् and hence √गम् takes the affix ‘क्त्वा’।
Note: अव्ययकृतो भावे (from महाभाष्यम्) – कृत् affixes (such as ‘क्‍त्‍वा’) having the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा are used to denote भाव: (action) – and not the agent (ref. 3-4-67) of the action.

Note: Here 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prohibits the affix ‘त्वा’ from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः

By 6-4-37 अनुदात्तोपदेशवनतितनोत्यादीनामनुनासिकलोपो झलि क्ङिति – There is an elision of the final nasal consonant of the verbal root √वन् (वनँ शब्दे १. ९१५) and of the verbal roots* which have अनुदात्त-स्वरः in the धातु-पाठः as well as of the verbal roots belonging to the तनादि-गणः – when followed by a झलादि-प्रत्ययः which is a कित् or a ङित्।
The following six roots end in a nasal consonant and have a अनुदात्त-स्वरः in the धातु-पाठः।

‘गत्वा’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।
‘गत्वा’ also gets the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः – Words ending in the affixes ‘क्त्वा’, ‘तोसुन्’ and ‘कसुन्’ are designated as indeclinables.

(4) गत्वा + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः – The feminine affix आप् and सुँप् affixes that are prescribed after a अव्ययम् take the लुक् elision.

Questions:

1. In which two chapters of the गीता has गत्वा been used? In each case identify the common doer(s) and the later action done by the common doer(s).

2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले (used in step 1) the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी says – द्वित्‍वमतन्‍त्रम्। Please explain.

3. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix ‘काम्यच्’ used in उर्वशीलोककाम्यया?

4. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे been used in the verses?

5. From which verbal root is जातम् (used in the commentary) derived?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“After going home I got your message.” Use the masculine noun ‘सन्देश’ for ‘message.’

Easy questions:

1. Why doesn’t 6-1-109 एङः पदान्तादति apply between द्वे + अरणी?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः been used in the verses?

रुदित्वा ind

Today we will look at the form रुदित्वा ind from श्रीमद्-वाल्मीकि-रामायणम् 7.24.32.

Gita Press translation – Comforting her through appeasement when reproached in these words by his wailing sister, Rāvaṇa (the ten-headed monster) replied (to her) as follows :- “Have done with weeping, my child; you should not be afraid of anyone (second part of 31-32). I shall particularly gratify you by means of gifts, politeness and favors. Intoxicated in war and distracted, longing as I did for victory, I went on raining arrows and was unable to distinguish between my own people and others in combat while fighting. While striking, fierce as I was in combat, I failed to recognize my own son-in-law (33-34).

रुदित्वा is derived from the verbal root √रुद् (रुदिँर् अश्रुविमोचने २. Note: अलं रोदनेन/रुदितेन is also allowed as per 3-1-94 वासरूपोऽस्त्रियाम्।

By 3-4-18 अलङ्खल्वोः प्रतिषेधयोः प्राचां क्त्वा – In the opinion of the Eastern grammarians, the affix ‘क्त्वा’ is used following a verbal root when in combination with अलम्/खलु expressing the sense of prohibition. Note: The mention of the Eastern grammarians is for the sake of showing respect. (Optionality is already available by 3-1-94 वासरूपोऽस्त्रियाम्)।

By 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः, a आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: beginning with a letter of the वल्-प्रत्याहारः gets the augment ‘इट्’। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the augment ‘इट्’ at the beginning of the प्रत्यय:।

As per 1-2-18 न क्त्वा सेट् the affix ‘इत्वा’ would not be considered a कित्। But the affix ‘इत्वा’ is necessarily a कित् affix here by 1-2-8 रुदविदमुषग्रहिस्वपिप्रच्छः संश्च – The affix ‘क्त्वा’ as well as ‘सन्’ is considered to be a कित् (having ककारः as a इत्) when it follows the verbal root √रुद् (रुदिँर् अश्रुविमोचने २.
1-2-8 also stops 1-2-26 रलो व्युपधाद्धलादेः संश्च (which would have made the affix ‘क्त्वा’ optionally a कित् affix) – When used with the augment ‘इट्’, the affixes ‘क्त्वा’ and ‘सन्’ are optionally treated as ‘कित्’ (having the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) when they follow a verbal root which begins with a consonant and ends in a रल् letter and has either a इवर्णः (इकारः/ईकारः) or a उवर्णः (उकारः/ऊकारः) as its penultimate letter.

‘रुदित्वा’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः

We would normally form a compound (by 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्) between अलम् + रुदित्वा, but the compounding is stopped by the नियम-सूत्रम् 2-2-20 अमैवाव्ययेन

Compounding (by 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्) between अलम् + रुदित्वा is stopped by the नियम-सूत्रम् 2-2-20 अमैवाव्ययेन – A उपपदम् (ref. 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌) may be compounded with a अव्ययम् only if the अव्ययम् ends in the affix ‘अम्’ (for example ‘णमुँल्’ – ref. 3-4-26 स्वादुमि णमुल्), provided also that the affix ‘अम्’ is the only affix prescribed by the same rule which prescribes the उपपदम्।

By 8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः

Questions:

1. In how many places in the गीता has the सूत्रम् 3-4-18 अलङ्खल्वोः प्रतिषेधयोः प्राचां क्त्वा been used?
(i) 0 (ii) 1 (iii) 2 (iv) 3

2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-4-18 अलङ्खल्वोः प्रतिषेधयोः प्राचां क्त्वा (used in step 1) the काशिका says – अलङ्खल्वोरिति किम्? Please explain.

3. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 1-2-26 रलो व्युपधाद्धलादेः संश्च (referred to in step 5) the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – ‘न क्त्वा सेट्’ इत्यतः सेडिति वर्तते। Please explain.

4. Commenting on the same सूत्रम् 1-2-26 the काशिका says – रल इति किम्? Please explain.

5. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the augment सक् in अज्ञासिषम्?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Stop eating meat.”

Easy questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-110 ऋतो ङिसर्वनामस्थानयोः been used in the verses?

2. What are the three alternate forms for

Today we will look at the form दुर्योधनाय mDs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 10.86.3.

Gita Press translation – He further learnt that Balarāma would give her away to Duryodhana, but not others. Eager to win her he went to Dwārakā disguised as a recluse bearing a triple staff (symbolic of renunciation) (3). There Arjuṇa spent the four months of the monsoon intent upon accomplishing his object. He was every now and then honored by the citizens as well as by Balarāma, who could not identify him (4).

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दुर्योधन’ is derived from the verbal root √युध् (युधँ सम्प्रहारे ४. ६९) in composition with दुर्/’दुस्’।
६९) is normally an intransitive verbal root, but it has been treated as being transitive (‘to fight against’) here.

By वार्तिकम् (under 3-3-130 अन्येभ्योऽपि दृश्यते) भाषायां शासियुधिदृशिधृषिमृषिभ्यो युज्वक्तव्यः – In the classical language, the affix युच् is used following any one of the verbal roots listed below when in composition with either ‘ईषत्’ or ‘दुर्’/’दुस्’ or ‘सु’ used in the sense of ‘difficulty’ or ‘ease’ –
The affix ‘युच्’ prescribed by this सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to the affix ‘खल्’ prescribed by 3-3-126.
Note: The term ईषद्दुःसुषु (which comes as अनुवृत्ति: in to the वार्तिकम् from 3-3-126 ईषद्दुःसुषु कृच्छ्राकृच्छ्रार्थेषु खल्) ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘दुर्’/’दुस्’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।

By 7-1-1 युवोरनाकौ – The affixes ‘यु’ and ‘वु’ are substituted respectively by ‘अन’ and ‘अक’। The entire प्रत्ययः is replaced as per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य

By 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च – When a अङ्गम् is followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्ययः, then its इक्-letter takes the  गुण: substitution in the following two cases:
i) The अङ्गम् ends in a ‘पुक्’-आगमः।
or
ii) The penultimate letter of the अङ्गम् has the लघु-सञ्ज्ञा।

Now we form the compound between ‘दुर्’/’दुस्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘योधन’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्। Note: Here ‘दुर्’/’दुस्’ is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम्। In the compound, ‘दुर्/दुस्’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌।

‘दुर्/दुस् योधन’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

By 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः।

The विवक्षा here is पुंलिङ्गे चतुर्थी-एकवचनम्

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।

By 7-1-13 ङेर्यः – Following a प्रातिपदिकम् ending in the letter ‘अ’, the affix ‘ङे’ (चतुर्थी-एकवचनम्) is replaced by ‘य’।

By 7-3-102 सुपि च – The ending letter ‘अ’ of a प्रातिपदिकम् is elongated if it is followed by a सुँप् affix beginning with a letter of the यञ्-प्रत्याहार:।

Questions:

1. Where has the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दुर्योधन’ been used in (Chapter One of) the गीता?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-4-49 सः स्यार्धधातुके been used in the verses?

3. Which कृत् affix is used to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘साधक’ (used as part of the compound स्वार्थसाधकः in the verses)?

4. From which verbal root is अगात् derived?

5. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the अभ्यास-लोप: in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘लिप्सु’ (used as part of the compound तल्लिप्सुः in the verses)?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Arjuna did not want to kill Duryodhana and his brothers in the war.”

Easy questions:

1. Where has लृँट् been used in the verses?

2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘शृ’ in अशृणोत् (used in the commentary)?

दु:सन्धानः mNs

Today we will look at the form दु:सन्धानः mNs from पञ्चतन्त्रम् verse 2.38

Translation by Prof. Kale – Like a jar of earth a wicked man is broken off (estranged, made an enemy) easily and reunited (won over) with difficulty; but a good man, like a jar of gold, is difficult to be broken off and easy to be reunited (won over.)

‘दु:सन्धान’ is derived from the verbal root √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके ३. ११) – preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘सम्’ – in composition with ‘दुर्/दुस्’।

By 3-3-128 आतो युच् – The affix युच् is used following a verbal root ending (ref. 1-1-72 येन विधिस्तदन्तस्य) in ‘आ’ when in composition with either ‘ईषत्’ or ‘दुर्’/’दुस्’ or ‘सु’ used in the sense of ‘difficulty’ or ‘ease.’
Note: The term ईषद्दुःसुषु (which comes as अनुवृत्ति: in to 3-3-128 from 3-3-126 ईषद्दुःसुषु कृच्छ्राकृच्छ्रार्थेषु खल्) ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘दुर्/दुस्’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌

See question 1.

By 7-1-1 युवोरनाकौ – The affixes ‘यु’ and ‘वु’ are substituted respectively by ‘अन’ and ‘अक’। The entire प्रत्ययः is replaced as per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य

Gita Press translation – Words of reproach are heard with reference to a coward, saying ‘Woe to him who lives even though censured (by good men)!’ Let the path trodden by the virtuous be followed and let fear be shaken off (23). If, in the event of our (span of) life being brief, we lie down killed (by the enemy), we shall attain the realm of Brahmā, which is difficult to attain for bad warriors (who are afraid of an encounter) (24). Killing the enemy in combat, we shall acquire glory. If struck down, on the other hand, we shall enjoy the riches of Brahmaloka (the realm attained by heroes), O monkeys! (25) Kumbhakarṇa will never escape alive on coming face to face with Śrī Rāma (a scion of Kakutstha) any more than a moth on approaching a blazing fire (26).

Translation – You grant the wishes of those who take refuge in You. Therefore, when I proceed to create the universe, which will be nothing but an exhibition of Your own creative power, be pleased to fill my mind with (the thought of) each and every exploit You may perform in course of the descents You take along with Your own divine Energy, Goddess Ramā, manifesting many a divine virtue, so that I may remain untainted by the impurities (in the shape of egotism etc.) attaching to the work of creation (23). I am the deity presiding over the Mahat-tattva, which represents Your power of understanding, one of the innumerable powers possessed by You, and sprang from the pool of Your navel even while You, the Supreme Person, slept on these waters. Therefore, as I proceed to bring to light the wonderful creation, which will be Your own manifestation, let not my utterance of the words of the Veda fail (24).

The पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘निगम’ is derived from the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७) with the उपसर्ग: ‘नि’।

By 3-3-119 गोचरसंचरवहव्रजव्यजापणनिगमाश्च – ‘गोचर’, ‘संचर’, ‘वह’, ‘व्रज’, ‘व्यज’, ‘आपण’ and ‘निगम’ are given as ready-made proper nouns ending in the affix ‘घ’ to denote in the masculine gender the instrument or the locus of the action.

See question 2.

‘निगम’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

The विवक्षा is षष्ठी-एकवचनम्।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।

By 7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः – Following a अङ्गम् ending in the letter ‘अ’, the affixes ‘टा’, ‘ङसिँ’ and ‘ङस्’ are replaced respectively by ‘इन’, ‘आत्’ and ‘स्य’। As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य the entire affix ‘ङस्’ is replaced.

Questions:

1. Where has the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७) been used with the उपसर्ग: ‘नि’ in Chapter Nine of the गीता?

2. Commenting on the affix ‘घ’ implied in the ready-made forms given in the सूत्रम् 3-3-119 गोचरसंचरवहव्रजव्यजापणनिगमाश्च (used in step 1), the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – ‘हलश्च’ इति वक्ष्यमाणस्य घञोऽपवाद:। Please explain.

3. In the verses can you spot three words in which the सूत्रम् 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे has been used?

4. Why doesn’t the सूत्रम् 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः apply in the form ‘विक्रम’?

5. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix घञ् in the form ‘अवतार’ (used as part of the compound गृहीतगुणावतारः in the verses)?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“For one who is liberated what is the use of (with) the Veda?” To express the meaning of ‘for’ use the षष्ठी विभक्ति: with ‘one who is liberated.’ Use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रयोजन’ for ‘use.’

Easy questions:

1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the augment इट् in करिष्यति?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-4-75 जुहोत्यादिभ्यः श्लुः been used in the verses?
