Gita Press translation – Carrying away Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, Tṛṇāvarta, who had assumed the form of a whirlwind, went up to the skies (to a certain height) but could not proceed (further), his impetuosity having ceased now that he (felt he) was carrying a huge burden (since the Lord had grown heavy again) (26). Taking that wonderful Boy to be a rock (of sapphire) because of His being heavier than himself (and having given up the form of a whirlwind), he could not cast Him away, caught as he was by the throat (27).

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘मन्यमान’ is derived from the verbal root √मन् (मनँ ज्ञाने ४. ७३).

The अकार: at the end of ‘मनँ’ gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। This इत् letter has a अनुदात्त-स्वरः। Therefore as per 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम्, √मन् takes आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

3-2-126 लक्षणहेत्वोः क्रियायाः – ‘शतृँ’/’शानच्’ replaces ‘लँट्’ when it follows a verbal root which denotes an action which constitutes a characteristic (लक्षणम्) or result/cause (हेतु: = फलम्/कारणम्) of another action (in the present example उत्स्रष्टुम्)। Note: As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, ‘शतृँ’ has the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा, while as per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, ‘शानच्’ has the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। And as explained above, √मन् is आत्मनेपदी। Hence ‘शानच्’ is chosen and not ‘शतृँ’।

By 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन्, the श्यन्-प्रत्यय: is placed after the verbal roots belonging to the दिवादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ । Note: ‘शानच्’ has the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

By 7-2-82 आने मुक् – A अकार: belonging to a अङ्गम् takes the augment मुँक् when followed by ‘आन’। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ – the “मुँक्”-आगम: joins after the अकार:।

‘मन्यमान’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds get the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-82 आने मुक् (used in step 7) been used in the last five verses of Chapter Six of the गीता?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-2-82 आने मुक् has been used in the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘यतमान’ in the form यतमानः in the following verse –

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘यतमान’ is derived from the verbal root √यत् (यतीँ प्रयत्ने १. ३०).
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।

Please explain.
Answer: In the prior सूत्रम् 7-2-80 अतो येयः, the word अतः is in पञ्चमी विभक्तिः। तत्त्वबोधिनी is explaining that अतः comes down as अनुवृत्तिः into 7-2-82, but the पञ्चमी विभक्तिः of अतः is transformed into षष्ठी विभक्तिः। What is the basis for changing the विभक्ति:? The answer is सप्तमीबलात् – The term आने in the  सूत्रम् 7-2-82 आने मुक् ends in the सप्तमी विभक्ति:। Hence as per the सूत्रम् 1-1-66 तस्मिन्निति निर्दिष्टे पूर्वस्य the operation (which in this case is attaching the augment मुँक्) is to be done on the term immediately preceding ‘आन’। And as per 1-1-49 षष्ठी स्थानेयोगा the term on which the operation is performed is indicated by using the षष्ठी विभक्तिः। This is the logic for changing the विभक्ति: of अत: (which is term taking the augment मुँक्) from पञ्चमी-एकवचनम् to षष्ठी-एकवचनम्।

    3. Which सूत्रम् is used for the दीर्घादेश: in the form गृहीत:?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-2-37 ग्रहोऽलिटि दीर्घः is used for the दीर्घादेशः in the form गृहीत:।

Please see the following post for the derivation of गृहीत: – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/11/21/गृहीतः-mns/

    4. In the verses, can you spot a प्रातिपदिकम् which ends in ‘शतृँ’? Can you spot another one in the commentary?
Answer: In the verses, the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘हरत्’ used in the form हरन् ends in the ‘शतृँ’ affix.

    ‘हरत्’ is derived from the verbal root √हृ (हृञ् हरणे १. १०४६) as follows:
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।

The derivation of हरन् (पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) from the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘हरत्’ is as follows:
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा….। Note: The affix ‘सुँ’ has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य।
By 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः। Note: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘हरत्’ ends in the affix ‘शतृँ’ which has ऋकार: as a इत्। This allows 7-1-70 to apply here.
Note: After this 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य does not apply because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्।

In the commentary it is used in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इच्छत्’ in the form इच्छन्।
‘इच्छत्’ is derived from the verbal root used √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६. ७८) as follows:
By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-77 तुदादिभ्यः शः।
    Note: The affix “श” is ङिद्वत् by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्। Therefore, 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops the गुणादेशः which may have been done by 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
By 7-3-77 इषुगमियमां छः।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।

The derivation of इच्छन् (पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) from the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इच्छत्’ is similar to the derivation of हरन् (पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) from the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘हरत्’ shown above.

    5. Why doesn’t the निष्ठा affix ‘क्त’ take the augment ‘इट्’ in the form ‘शान्त’ (used as part of the compound शान्तरय: in the verses)?
    Answer: The affix ‘क्त’ is prevented from taking the augment इट् by 7-2-15 यस्य विभाषा with the help of 7-2-56 उदितो वा in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शान्त’ derived from the verbal root √शम् (शमुँ उपशमे ४. ९८).

The derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शान्त’ is similar to the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘श्रान्त’ as shown in the following post – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/12/19/श्रान्तः-mns/

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I did not study grammar thinking that this is too difficult.” Use the (compound) adjective प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अतिक्लिष्ट’ for ‘too difficult.’

    Easy questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ has been used in the form अश्मानम् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “अश्मन्”, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्।)
By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of “अम्” from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा। “अम्” gets the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य।
By 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ, the penultimate letter of the अङ्गम् (base) ending in a नकार: gets elongated if it is followed by a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix.

    2. Can you spot the affix ‘श्नु’ in the verses?
    Answer: The affix ‘श्नु’ is seen in the form अशक्नोत् derived from √शक् (स्वादि-गणः, शकॢँ शक्तौ, धातु-पाठः # ५.

By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ् |
By 3-4-100 इतश्च।
By 3-1-73 स्वादिभ्यः श्नुः – The श्नु-प्रत्यय: is placed after the verbal roots of the स्वादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ ।
By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः।
By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the “अट्”-आगमः which is उदात्तः।
