Gita Press translation – Thank heaven, you have come; may all be well with you! With the help of my kinsfolk I shall secure for you (all) the sensuous pleasures you long to obtain, O vanquisher of foes ! (36) Occupy you this city with nine gates, O lord, enjoying for a hundred years the sensuous pleasures made available by me (37).

पुरीम् is द्वितीया-एकवचनम् of the स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पुरी’।

‘पुरी’ gets the कर्म-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-46 अधिशीङ्स्थासां कर्म – That कारकम् (participant in the action) which is the location of the action denoted by any one of the following verbal roots preceded by the prefix ‘अधि’ is designated as कर्म –

See question 2.

In the current example ‘पुरी’ is associated with the verbal root √स्था preceded by the prefix ‘अधि’ (in the form अधितिष्ठस्व)।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। Since ‘पुरी’ has the कर्म-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-46 अधिशीङ्स्थासां कर्म, it takes a second case affix by 2-3-2 कर्मणि द्वितीया – A second case affix (‘अम्’, ‘औट्’, ‘शस्’) is used to denote कर्म (object of the action) provided it has not been expressed otherwise.
Note: 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of ‘अम्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्व: – In place of a preceding letter ‘अक्’ and the following vowel (‘अच्’) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 1-4-46 अधिशीङ्स्थासां कर्म been used in the first ten verses of Chapter Four of the गीता?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 1-4-46 अधिशीङ्स्थासां कर्म has been used in the following verse of the गीता to assign the कर्म-सञ्ज्ञा to ‘प्रकृति’ (and the pronoun ‘स्वा’)।

    2. The सूत्रम् 1-4-46 अधिशीङ्स्थासां कर्म is a अपवाद: (exception) to which सूत्रम्?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 1-4-46 अधिशीङ्स्थासां कर्म is a अपवाद: (exception) to the prior सूत्रम् 1-4-45 आधारोऽधिकरणम् which would have assigned the designation अधिकरणम् to the location of the action.

    3. Why is उद्वहिष्यामि a आर्ष-प्रयोग: (irregular grammatical usage)?
Answer: The form उद्वहिष्यामि is a आर्ष-प्रयोग: because the augment ‘इट्’ is not justified here. The grammatically correct form is उद्वक्ष्यामि – derived from the verbal root √वह् (वहँ प्रापणे १.
Please refer to the answer to question 4 in the following comment for derivation of the form वक्ष्यामि – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/10/24/जनमेजयः-mns/#comment-5711

    ‘उद्’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.

    4. Can you spot the augment मुँम् in the verses?
    Answer: The augment मुँम् occurs in the form (हे) अरिन्दम (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अरिन्दम’, पुंलिङ्गे सम्बुद्धि:)।

Please refer to answer to question 4 in the following comment for derivation of the form अरिन्दम – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2013/01/30/विभो-mvs/#comment-18311

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-37 अनुदात्तोपदेशवनतितनोत्यादीनामनुनासिकलोपो झलि क्ङिति been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-37 अनुदात्तोपदेशवनतितनोत्यादीनामनुनासिकलोपो झलि क्ङिति has been used in the form आगतः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आगत’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आगत’ is derived from the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘आङ्’ as follows:
गम् + क्त । By 3-2-102 निष्ठा। Note: The affix ‘क्त’ has been used कर्तरि (to denote the agent of the action) here as per 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च।
Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prevents the affix ‘त’ from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 6-4-37 अनुदात्तोपदेशवनतितनोत्यादीनामनुनासिकलोपो झलि क्ङिति – There is an elision of the final nasal consonant of the verbal root √वन् (वनँ शब्दे १. ९१५) and of the verbal roots* which have अनुदात्त-स्वरः in the धातु-पाठः as well as of the verbal roots** belonging to the तनादि-गणः – when followed by a झलादि-प्रत्ययः which is a कित् or a ङित्।

The following six roots end in a nasal consonant and have a अनुदात्त-स्वरः in the धातु-पाठः।

    ‘गत’ is compounded with the उपसर्गः ‘आङ्’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Lord Viṣṇu occupies (presides over) Vaikuṇṭha.”

    Easy questions:

    1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution आम् in आस्ताम्?
Answer: The substitution ‘आम्’ in the form आस्ताम् is prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-4-90 आमेतः

    The form ‘आस्ताम्’ used in the verses is derived from the verbal root √आस् (आसँ उपवेशने २.
By 3-3-162 लोट् च।
By 3-4-90 आमेतः – the letter ‘ए’ of लोँट् is replaced by आम्। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of ‘ताम्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-4-50 तासस्त्योर्लोपः been used in the verses?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-4-50 तासस्त्योर्लोपः has been used in the verses in the form असि।
Please see answer to easy question 2 in the following comment for the derivation of the form असि – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/10/24/जनमेजयः-mns/#comment-5711
