प्रवरान्तरम् nAs

Today we will look at the form प्रवरान्तरम्  nAs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 9.16.37

Gita Press translation – “This valiant Devarāta is one of you (as good a scion of Kuśika as you), O scions of Kuśika! (Hence) follow him (as an elder brother).” There were other sons too of Viśwāmitra – Aṣṭaka, Hārīta, Jaya, Kratumān and so on (36). Thus, of course, the line of Kuśika was ramified into various off-shoots due to the sons of Viśwāmitra. And it acquired a different Pravara (branch name, viz., that of Devarāta) inasmuch as it was given a new shape (with Devarāta as the eldest son of Viśwāmitra) (37).

As per 2-1-72 मयूरव्यंसकादयश्च – ‘मयूरव्यंसक’ etc are given as ready-made तत्पुरुषः compounds.
Note: अविहितलक्षणस्तत्पुरुषो मयूरव्यंसकादिषु द्रष्टव्य: – A तत्पुरुषः compound that is accepted in usage but is not prescribed by any rule should be considered to be part of the मयूरव्यंसकादि-गण:। Hence even though the तत्पुरुषः compound प्रवरान्तरम् is not specifically listed in the मयूरव्यंसकादिगण: we may consider it to be included therein.
Note: ‘अन्तर’ is used in the sense of ‘अन्य’ (another)/ ‘भिन्न’ (different) here and it has been placed in the latter position in the compound even though it is the adjective. The सूत्रम् 2-1-72 मयूरव्यंसकादयश्च is necessary to justify this compound because if we were to use the सूत्रम् 2-1-57 विशेषणं विशेष्येण बहुलम्‌ the विशेषणम् (adjective) ‘अन्तर’ would have to be placed in the prior position in the compound.
Note: ‘प्रवर सुँ + अन्तर सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.

By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

Note: Even though ‘प्रवर’ is masculine, the compound ‘प्रवरान्तर’ is used in the neuter gender because that is how it is (considered to be ) listed in the मयूरव्यंसकादिगण:। It declines like वन-शब्द:।

The विवक्षा is द्वितीया-एकवचनम्।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।

By 7-1-24 अतोऽम् – The affixes ‘सुँ’ and ‘अम्’ that follow a neuter अङ्गम् ending in the short vowel ‘अ’ take ‘अम्’ as their replacement. 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of the affix ‘अम्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
Note: 7-1-24 is required here to prevent 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्‌ from applying.

By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

Questions:

1. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-1-72 मयूरव्यंसकादयश्च (used in step 2) the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – चकारोऽत्रावधारणार्थः। Please explain.

2. Where does the सूत्रम् 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च find application in the verses?

3. In which word in the verses has the affix णिच् been elided?

“I don’t want to have (get) another birth.” Form a तत्पुरुष: compound for ‘another birth’ = अन्यज्जन्म।

Easy questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-4-101 तस्थस्थमिपां तांतंतामः been used in the verses?

2. Can you spot the augment आट् in the commentary?

  1. 1. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-1-72 मयूरव्यंसकादयश्च (used in step 2) the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – चकारोऽत्रावधारणार्थः। Please explain.
Answer: चकारोऽत्रावधारणार्थः – The use of ‘च’ in this सूत्रम् is for the purpose of limitation. तेन ‘परममयूरव्यंसकः’ इत्यादि समासान्तरं न भवति – hence the compounds मयूरव्यंसकः etc cannot be further compounded to give forms like परममयूरव्यंसकः etc.

    2. Where does the सूत्रम् 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च find application in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च finds application in the form आपन्नम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आपन्न’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √पद् (पदँ गतौ ४. ६५) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘आङ्’। Derivation is as follows –

By 3-2-102 निष्ठा। Note: The affix ‘क्त’ has been used कर्तरि here as per 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च – When following one of the verbal roots listed below, the affix ‘क्त’ may be used in the active voice (कर्तरि) as well as in the passive voice (भावकर्मणो:) –
    (i) any verbal root used in the sense of motion (गत्यर्थ:)
(ii) any verbal root used intransitively (अकर्मक:)
    (iii) the verbal roots √श्लिष् (श्लिषँ आलिङ्गने ४.
Note: The verbal roots listed in (iii) are intransitive. But when used with a उपसर्ग: they may become transitive. In that case they would not be covered by (ii). This is the reason for listing them separately in (iii).
Note: Here 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prevents the affix ‘त’ from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।

’पन्न’ is compounded with the उपसर्गः ’आङ्’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
    ‘आपन्न’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    3. In which word in the verses has the affix णिच् been elided?
    Answer: The affix णिच् has been elided in the form प्रकल्पितम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रकल्पित’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √कॢप् (कृपूँ सामर्थ्ये १.

By 3-1-26 हेतुमति च।

By 3-2-102 निष्ठा। The affix ‘क्त’ has been used कर्मणि as per the सूत्रम् 3-4-70 तयोरेव कृत्यक्तखलर्थाः।
By 6-4-52 निष्ठायां सेटि – The affix ‘णि’ is elided when followed by a निष्ठा affix (ref. 1-1-26) which has taken the augment ‘इट्’।

’कल्पित’ is compounded with the उपसर्गः ’प्र’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
    ‘प्रकल्पित’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    4. Which वार्त्तिकम् justifies the use of a third case affix in the word पुत्रत्वेन in the commentary?
Answer: The third case affix occurring in the form पुत्रत्वेन (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पुत्रत्व’, तृतीया-एकवचनम्) can be justified by the वार्तिकम् (under 2-3-18 कर्तृकरणयोस्तृतीया) प्रकृत्यादिभ्य उपसङ्ख्यानम् – A third case affix (‘टा’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भिस्’) is used following the प्रातिपदिकानि (nominal stems) ‘प्रकृति’ etc.

Note: आकृति-गणोऽयम्। The list ‘प्रकृति’ etc is a आकृति-गण: – which is a class or group of words in which some words are actually mentioned and room is left to include others which are found undergoing the same operations. So even though ‘पुत्रत्व’ is not specifically listed in the प्रकृत्यादि-गण:, from the usage we have to understand it to be included there.

पुत्रत्वेन is an adverb to the action of ‘adopting.’ पुत्रत्वेन स्वीकृतः = was accepted in the manner of son-ness – i.e. was adopted as a son.

    5. In the commentary can you spot a word in which सम्प्रसारणम् has taken place?
    Answer: सम्प्रसारणम् has taken place in the form अनुगृहीताः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अनुगृहीत’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √ग्रह् (ग्रहँ उपादाने ९.७१).

Please see the following post for the derivation of the

    ‘गृहीत’ is compounded with the उपसर्गः ‘अनु’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।

‘अनुगृहीत’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। In the masculine gender it declines like राम-शब्द:।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I don’t want to have (get) another birth.” Form a तत्पुरुष: compound for ‘another birth’ = अन्यज्जन्म।

    Easy questions:
    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-4-101 तस्थस्थमिपां तांतंतामः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-4-101 तस्थस्थमिपां तांतंतामः has been used in the verses in the form अन्वित – derived from the verbal root √इ (इण् गतौ २.

By 3-3-162 लोट् च – The affix लोँट् follows a धातुः when used in the sense of command/request.
    = इ + त । By 3-4-101 तस्थस्थमिपां तांतंतामः – The तिङ्-प्रत्ययाः ‘तस्’, ‘थस्’, ‘थ’ and ‘मिप्’ of a लकारः which is a ङित् (has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्), are replaced by ‘ताम्’, ‘तम्’, ‘त’ and ‘अम्’ respectively (ref: 1-3-10 यथासंख्यमनुदेशः समानाम्)।
Note: As per 3-4-85 लोटो लङ्वत्‌ – लोँट् is treated like लँङ्, and hence the following two operations take place in the case of लोँट् as they do in the case of लँङ् –
    i) the substitution by ताम् etc. (ref 3-4-101) and ii) the elision of the letter ‘स्’ (ref 3-4-99).
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
    = इ + त । By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः। Note: Since the सार्वधातुकम् affix ‘त’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्), by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। Therefore 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः from applying here.

    ‘अनु’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    2. Can you spot the augment आट् in the commentary?
Answer: The augment आट् occurs in the form आसन् – derived from the verbal root √अस् (असँ भुवि २. ६०).

Please see answer to question 2 in the following comment for derivation of the form आसन् – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/07/24/जुगुप्सया-fis/#comment-4076
