Gita Press translation – We meditate on that transcendent Reality (God) from whom this universe springs up, in whom it abides and into whom it returns – because He is invariably present in all existing things and is distinct from all non-entities – who is self-conscious and self-effulgent, who revealed to Brahmā (the very first seer) by His mere will the Vedas that cause bewilderment even to the greatest sages, in whom this threefold creation (consisting of Sattva, Rajas and Tamas), though unreal, appears as real (because of the reality of its substratum) – even as the sun’s rays (which are made up of the elemental of fire) are mistaken for water (in a mirage), water for earth and earth for water – and who ever excludes Māyā by His own self-effulgent glory (1).

त्र्यवयव: सर्ग: = त्रिसर्ग: – threefold creation.
Note: त्र्यवयव: itself is a बहुव्रीहि-समास: explained as follows – त्रयोऽवयवा यस्य स: = त्र्यवयव: – threefold. The compound ‘त्र्यवयव’ is then used in the following derivation –

अलौकिक-विग्रह: –
(2) त्र्यवयव सुँ + सर्ग सुँ । By 2-1-57 विशेषणं विशेष्येण बहुलम्‌ – A सुबन्तं (ending in a सुँप् affix) पदम् denoting a qualifier (adjective) variously compounds with another सुबन्तं (ending in a सुँप् affix) पदम् which denotes that which is qualified – provided both the सुबन्त-पदे refer to the same item – and the resulting compound is a तत्पुरुष:।

(3) By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – the term ‘त्र्यवयव सुँ’ gets the designation उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-1-57 (which prescribes the compounding) the term विशेषणम्‌ ends in the nominative case. Hence the adjective ‘त्र्यवयव सुँ’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ should be placed in the prior position.

Note: ‘त्र्यवयव सुँ + सर्ग सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.

(4) त्र्यवयव + सर्ग । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

(5) त्रिसर्ग । By the वार्तिकम् – शाकपार्थिवादीनां सिद्धये उत्तरपदलोपस्‍योपसंख्‍यानम् – In order to explain compounds like शाकपार्थिव:, an additional provision is made to allow for the elision of the latter member of a compound (which itself is the prior member of the final compound.) In the present example the latter member ‘अवयव’ of the compound ‘त्र्यवयव’ is elided in order to explain the compound ‘त्रिसर्ग’।
Note: A compound composed using this वार्तिकम् is referred to as a शाकपार्थिवादिसमास: or a मध्यमपदलोपिसमास:।

As per the सूत्रम् 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः, the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘त्रिसर्ग’ is masculine since the latter member ‘सर्ग’ of the compound is masculine. The compound declines like राम-शब्द:।

The विवक्षा is प्रथमा-एकवचनम् ।

(6) त्रिसर्ग + सुँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

(7) त्रिसर्ग + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

(8) त्रिसर्ग: । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः

Questions:

1. Can you spot a शाकपार्थिवादिसमास: (मध्यमपदलोपिसमास:) in verses 23-25 of Chapter Ten of the गीता?

2. In which word in the verses does the सूत्रम् 3-1-136 आतश्चोपसर्गे find application?

3. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of a third case affix in the words हृदा and धाम्ना (as well as स्वेन) in the verses?

4. Which कृत् affix is used to construct the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘ध्येय’ (seen in the forms ध्येयम् (नपुंसकलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) and ध्येय: (पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) in the commentary)?

5. In which two words in the commentary has the verbal root √रभ् (रभँ राभस्ये १. ११२९) been used?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I have read only fifteen chapters of the BhagawadGītā.” Form a शाकपार्थिवादिसमास: (मध्यमपदलोपिसमास:) for fifteen = five + ten = पञ्चाधिका दश।

Easy questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि been used in the verses?

2. The form धीमहि (विधिलिँङ्, उत्तमपुरुष:, बहुवचनम्) is a आर्ष-प्रयोग: (irregular grammatical usage.) What is the grammatically correct form? Hint: The verbal root is √ध्यै (ध्यै चिन्तायाम् १. १०५६).

  1. 1. Can you spot a शाकपार्थिवादिसमास: (मध्यमपदलोपिसमास:) in verses 23-25 of Chapter Ten of the गीता?
    Answer: The compound जपयज्ञः (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ’जपयज्ञ’, प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) in the following verse of the गीता is a शाकपार्थिवादिसमास: (मध्यमपदलोपिसमास:) –

    महर्षीणां भृगुरहं गिरामस्म्येकमक्षरम्‌ |
    यज्ञानां जपयज्ञोऽस्मि स्थावराणां हिमालयः || 10-25||

जपरूपो यज्ञः = जपयज्ञः – sacrifice in the form of repetition of prayers.

Note: जपरूप: itself is a बहुव्रीहि-समास: explained as follows – जपो रूपं यस्य स: = जपरूप: – one whose form is repetition of prayers. The compound ‘जपरूप’ is then used in the following derivation –

    अलौकिक-विग्रह: –
    जपरूप सुँ + यज्ञ सुँ । By 2-1-57 विशेषणं विशेष्येण बहुलम्‌।
By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – the term ’जपरूप सुँ’ gets the designation उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-1-57 (which prescribes the compounding) the term विशेषणम्‌ ends in the nominative case. Hence the adjective ’जपरूप सुँ’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ should be placed in the prior position.
    Note: ’जपरूप सुँ + यज्ञ सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.
    = जपरूप + यज्ञ । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।
= जपयज्ञ । By the वार्तिकम् – शाकपार्थिवादीनां सिद्धये उत्तरपदलोपस्‍योपसंख्‍यानम् – In order to explain compounds like शाकपार्थिव:, an additional provision is made to allow for the elision of the latter member of a compound (which itself is the prior member of the final compound.) In the present example the latter member ‘रूप’ of the compound ‘जपरूप’ is elided in order to explain the compound ’जपयज्ञ’।
Note: A compound composed using this वार्तिकम् is referred to as a शाकपार्थिवादिसमास: or a मध्यमपदलोपिसमास:।
As per the सूत्रम् 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः, the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ’जपयज्ञ’ is masculine since the latter member ‘यज्ञ’ of the compound is masculine. The compound declines like राम-शब्द:। प्रथमा-एकवचनम् is जपयज्ञः।

    2. In which word in the verses does the सूत्रम् 3-1-136 आतश्चोपसर्गे find application?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-1-136 आतश्चोपसर्गे finds application in the form अभिज्ञः (प्रातिपदिकम् ’अभिज्ञ’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √ज्ञा (ज्ञा अवबोधने ९. ४३).

    अभिजानाति = अभिज्ञः।

The (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अभिज्ञ’ is derived as follows:
    अभि ज्ञा + क । By 3-1-136 आतश्चोपसर्गे – The affix ‘क’ may be used after a verbal root ending in the letter ‘आ’, when in composition with a उपसर्गः (ref: 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे)
Note: As per 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌, the affix ‘क’ denotes the agent of the action.
Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-1-136 आतश्चोपसर्गे, the term उपसर्गे ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence the उपसर्गः ‘अभि’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
    = अभि ज्ञा + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = अभि ज्ञ् + अ । By 6-4-64 आतो लोप इटि च।
    = अभिज्ञ ।
Now we form a compound between ‘अभि’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘ज्ञ’ by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्।
In the compound, ‘अभि’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌। Note: Here ‘अभि’ is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ् (which prescribes the compounding) the term उपपदम् ends in the nominative case.
‘अभिज्ञ’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। It is an adjective which declines like राम-शब्द: in the masculine gender. प्रथमा-एकवचनम् is अभिज्ञः।

    3. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of a third case affix in the words हृदा and धाम्ना (as well as स्वेन) in the verses?
Answer: The use of a third case affix in the form हृदा (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ’हृदय’, तृतीया-एकवचनम्) and धाम्ना (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ’धामन्’, तृतीया-एकवचनम्) – as well as the corresponding pronoun स्वेन (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ’स्व’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे तृतीया-एकवचनम्) – is justified by the सूत्रम् 2-3-18 कर्तृकरणयोस्तृतीया – A third case affix (‘टा’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भिस्’) is used to denote कर्ता (the doer of the action) as well as करणम् (the instrument of the action) provided the doer/instrument has not been expressed otherwise.
    Note: As per 6-1-63 पद्दन्नोमास्हृन्निशसन्यूषन्दोषन्यकञ्छकन्नुदन्नासञ्छस्प्रभृतिषु, the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘हृदय’ optionally takes the substitution ‘हृद्’ when any सुँप् affix from ‘शस्’ onwards – that is from ‘शस्’ (द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्) up to ‘सुप्’ (सप्तमी-बहुवचनम्) – follows. Hence we get हृदय + टा = हृद् + टा (by 6-1-63) = हृद् + आ (by 1-3-7, 1-3-9) = हृदा as a तृतीया-एकवचनम् form.
Note: In the present example ’हृदय’ (will) is the instrument of the action तेने (revealed) and ’धामन्’ (effulgent glory) is the instrument of the action ‘to exclude’ expressed by the participle ‘निरस्त’ (which is part of the compound निरस्तकुहकम्)।

    4. Which कृत् affix is used to construct the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘ध्येय’ (seen in the forms ध्येयम् (नपुंसकलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) and ध्येय: (पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) in the commentary)?
    Answer: The कृत्य-प्रत्यय: ‘यत्’ – prescribed by 3-1-97 अचो यत्‌ – is used to construct the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘ध्येय’ – derived from the verbal root √ध्यै (ध्यै चिन्तायाम् १. १०५६).

Please see the following post for the derivation of the प्रतिपदिकम् ‘ध्येय’ –
    http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/09/10/ध्येयम्-nns

    5. In which two words in the commentary has the verbal root √रभ् (रभँ राभस्ये १. ११२९) been used?
    Answer: The verbal root √रभ् (रभँ राभस्ये १. ११२९) has been used in the forms प्रारिप्सु: (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रारिप्सु’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) and समारम्भः (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘समारम्भ’, प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रारिप्सु’ is derived as follows –
    रभ् + सन् । By 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा।
    = रभ् + स । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
    = रिस्भ् + स । By 7-4-54 सनि मीमाघुरभलभशकपतपदामच इस् – ‘इस्’ is substituted for the root-vowel of the following verbal roots when followed by the affix सन् beginning with the letter ‘स्’ (i.e. no augment ‘इट्’) –
    i) √मी (मीञ् हिंसायाम् ९. ४, डुमिञ् प्रक्षेपणे ५. ४ – elongated to “मी” by 6-4-16), ii) √मा (मा माने २. ५७, माङ् माने शब्दे च ३. ७, माङ् माने ४. ३७, मेङ् प्रणिदाने १. १११६ – becomes ‘मा’ by 6-1-45), iii) any verbal root having घु-सञ्ज्ञा (ref: 1-1-20), iv) √रभ् (रभँ राभस्ये १. ११२९), v) √लभ् (डुलभँष् प्राप्तौ १. ११३०), vi) √शक् (शकँ विभाषितो मर्षणे ४. ८४, शकॢँ शक्तौ ५. १७), vii) √पत् (पतॢँ गतौ १. ९७९) and viii) √पद् (पदँ गतौ ४. ६५).
    = रिस्भ्स् रिस्भ्स । By 6-1-9 सन्यङोः।
    = रिस्भ्स । By 7-4-58 अत्र लोपोऽभ्यासस्य।
    = रिभ्स । By 8-2-29 स्कोः संयोगाद्योरन्ते च।
    = रिप्स । By 8-4-55 खरि च।
    ’रिप्स’ has धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

    रिप्स + उ । By 3-2-168 सनाशंसभिक्ष उः। Note: The affix ’उ’ gets आर्धधातक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।
    = रिप्स् + उ । By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः।
    = रिप्सु ।
    Since the affix ’उ’ has the कृत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्, ’रिप्सु’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    ’रिप्सु’ is compounded with the उपसर्गौ ’प्र’ and ‘आङ्’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
    प्र + आङ् + रिप्सु = प्र + आ + रिप्सु । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = प्रारिप्सु । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः।
‘प्रारिप्सु’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। It is an adjective which declines like गुरु-शब्द: in the masculine gender. प्रथमा-एकवचनम् is प्रारिप्सुः।

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘समारम्भ’ is derived as follows –
    रभ् + घञ् । By 3-3-18 भावे।
    = रभ् + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = र नुँम् भ् + अ । By 7-1-63 रभेरशब्लिटोः – The verbal root √रभ् (रभँ राभस्ये १. ११२९) takes the augment ‘नुँम्’ when followed by an affix (other than ‘शप्’ or ‘लिँट्’) which begins with a vowel.
Note 7-1-63 applies regardless of 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः। Whereas 7-2-116 cannot apply once 7-1-63 has applied. Hence 7-1-63 is a नित्य-कार्यम् (an invariable rule) compared to 7-2-116. Hence 7-1-63 applies first.
    = र न् भ् + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = रंभ् + अ । By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि।
    = रम्भ् + अ। By 8-4-58 अनुस्वारस्य ययि परसवर्णः।
    = रम्भ ।

    ’रम्भ’ is compounded with the उपसर्गौ ‘सम्’ and ‘आङ्’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
    सम् + आङ् + रम्भ = समारम्भ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    ’समारम्भ’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।
Note: As per घञबन्त: (लिङ्गानुशासनम् २.२) – A प्रातिपदिकम् ending in the affix ‘घञ्’ or ‘अप्’ is used in the masculine gender.
    Hence the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘समारम्भ’ declines like राम-शब्द:। प्रथमा-एकवचनम् is समारम्भः।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
    “I have read only fifteen chapters of the BhagawadGītā.” Form a शाकपार्थिवादिसमास: (मध्यमपदलोपिसमास:) for fifteen = five + ten = पञ्चाधिका दश।
    Answer: भगवद्गीतायाः पञ्चदश एव अध्यायान् अपठम् = भगवद्गीतायाः पञ्चदशैवाध्यायानपठम्।

    Easy questions:
    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि has been used in the form तेने – derived from the verbal root √तन् (तनुँ विस्तारे ८. १).

    The विवक्षा is लिँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    तन् + लिँट् । By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
Note: As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल् शित् सर्वस्य the substitution ‘एश्’ replaces the entire term ‘त’।
    = तन् + ए । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = तन् तन् + ए । By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
    = त तन् + ए । By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
= तेने । By 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि, the letter ‘अ’ of a अङ्गम् takes the letter ‘ए’ as the substitute and simultaneously there is लोप: (elision) of the अभ्यास:, when all the following conditions are satisfied:
    (i) the letter ‘अ’ is preceded and followed by a single (non-conjunct) consonant
(ii) the अङ्गम् is followed by a लिँट् affix which is कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्)
(iii) in place of the first letter of the अङ्गम् there is no आदेश: (substitution) that is based on the लिँट् affix.
Note : By 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्, a लिँट् affix which is not a पित् – does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत् – is considered to be a कित् (as having the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्), as long as there is no संयोग: (conjunction consonant) prior to the affix. Hence ‘एश्’ is a कित् affix here. This allows 6-4-120 to apply.
