परितोषात् m-Ab-s

Today we will look at the form परितोषात् m-Ab-s from अभिज्ञान-शकुन्तलम् 1-2.

Translation – I do not consider skill in the representation of plays to be good (perfect) until (it causes) the satisfaction of the learned (audience); the mind of even those who are very well instructed has no confidence in itself.

परितोषात् is पञ्चमी-एकवचनम् of the पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘परितोष’।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। As per 2-3-10 पञ्चम्यपाङ्परिभिः – A fifth case affix (‘ङसिँ’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भ्यस्’) is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) co-occurring with ‘अप’/’परि’/’आङ्’ used as a कर्मप्रवचनीय:। In the present example ‘परितोष’ is co-occurring with ‘आङ्’ which has the designation कर्मप्रवचनीय: here as per 1-4-89 आङ् मर्यादावचने – The term ‘आङ्’ gets the designation कर्मप्रवचनीय: when used in the meaning of ‘up to (but excluding) a limit.’ Note: The ending consonant ‘ङ्’ of ‘आङ्’ is a इत् as per 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and is elided by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

See question 2.

By 7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः – Following a अङ्गम् ending in the letter ‘अ’, the affixes ‘टा’, ‘ङसिँ’ and ‘ङस्’ are replaced respectively by ‘इन’, ‘आत्’ and ‘स्य’। Note: Since the substitute ‘आत्’ has more than one letter, as per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य, the entire affix (and not just its last letter) is replaced by ‘आत्’।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘त्’ of ‘आत्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

  1. 1. Where has the combination of 1-4-89 आङ् मर्यादावचने and 2-3-10 पञ्चम्यपाङ्परिभिः been used in Chapter Eight of the गीता?
    Answer: The combination of 1-4-89 आङ् मर्यादावचने and 2-3-10 पञ्चम्यपाङ्परिभिः been used in आ ब्रह्मभुवनात् (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘ब्रह्मभुवन’, पञ्चमी-एकवचनम्) in the following verse –

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 1-4-89 आङ् मर्यादावचने (used in step 1) the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – वचनग्रहणादभिविधावपि। Please explain.
Answer: वचनग्रहणादभिविधावपि – The mention of ‘वचन’ in the सूत्रम् 1-4-89 आङ् मर्यादावचने tells us that ‘आङ्’ gets the designation कर्मप्रवचनीय: even when used in the meaning of अभिविधौ – ‘up to (and including) a limit.’

    3. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-3-10 पञ्चम्यपाङ्परिभिः (used in step 1) the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – परिरत्र वर्जने। To this the तत्त्वबोधिनी adds the comment – अत्र पञ्चमीविधौ वर्जनार्थेनापेन साहचर्यादिति भाव:। Please explain.
Answer: For the सूत्रम् 2-3-10 पञ्चम्यपाङ्परिभिः to apply ‘परि’ must be used in the sense of वर्जने ‘excluding.’ We infer this from the fact that in this सूत्रम् 2-3-10 (which prescribes a fifth case affix) ‘परि’ is associated with ‘अप’ which has the sense of वर्जने ‘excluding.’

    4. Which कृत् affix is used to form the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘परितोष’?
    Answer: The कृत् affix ‘घञ्’ is used to form the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘परितोष’ – derived from the verbal root √तुष् (तुषँ प्रीतौ ४. ८१) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘परि’।
By 3-3-18 भावे – The affix घञ् may be used following a verbal root to denote the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state.
By 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
‘तोष’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।
Note: घञबन्त: (लिङ्गानुशासनम् २.२) – A प्रातिपदिकम् ending in the affix ‘घञ्’ or ‘अप्’ is used in the masculine gender.
    ‘तोष’ is compounded with the उपसर्गः ‘परि’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
‘परितोष’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    5. Can you spot the (optional) substitution ‘वसुँ’ (in place of ‘शतृँ’) in the verse?
    Answer: The (optional) substitution ‘वसुँ’ (in place of ‘शतृँ’) occurs in the form विदुषाम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विद्वस्’, पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √विद् (विदँ ज्ञाने २. ५९).

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे। Note: As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, ‘शतृँ’ has the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा, while as per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, ‘शानच्’ has the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। As per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the verbal root √विद् (विदँ ज्ञाने २. ५९) takes a परस्मैपदम् affix and therefore ‘शतृँ’ is chosen and not ‘शानच्’।
    Note: ‘शतृँ’ has the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्। Since ‘शतृँ’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्) it behaves ङिद्वत् (as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्) by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।
By 7-1-36 विदेः शतुर्वसुः – When following a अङ्गम् consisting of the verbal root √विद् (विदँ ज्ञाने २. ५९), the affix ‘शतृँ’ is optionally replaced by a ‘वसुँ’। As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल् शित् सर्वस्य, the entire affix ‘शतृँ’ is replaced by ‘वसुँ’।
    Note: As per 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ, ‘वसुँ’ also has the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा and behaves ङिद्वत्। Since ‘वसुँ’ has the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा there is no question of applying 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः (which requires a आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय:)। And ‘वसुँ’ being ङिद्वत् allows 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to stop 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
For the derivation of the form विदुषाम् (पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्) from the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विद्वस्’ please see answer to easy question 1 below.

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I do not consider knowledge to be good (perfect) until (it gives rise to) humility.” To form a प्रातिपदिकम् for ‘humility’ use the affix अच् (prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-3-56 एरच्) following the verbal root √नी (णीञ् प्रापणे #१. १०४९) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘वि’।

    Easy questions:
    1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the सम्प्रसारणम् in the form विदुषाम्?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-131 वसोः सम्प्रसारणम् prescribes the सम्प्रसारणम् in the form विदुषाम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विद्वस्’, पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्)।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। The अङ्गम् ‘विद्वस्’ gets the भ-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-18 यचि भम्। This allows 6-4-131 to apply below.
    Note: 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of ‘आम्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-4-131 वसोः सम्प्रसारणम् – the अङ्गम् that ends in the ‘वसुँ’ affix and has the भ-सञ्ज्ञा takes सम्प्रसारणम्। As per 6-1-37 न सम्प्रसारणे सम्प्रसारणम्, the last यण् letter (the latter letter ‘व्’ of the अङ्गम् ‘विद्वस्’) takes the सम्प्रसारणम्।
By 6-1-108 सम्प्रसारणाच्च।
By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययोः।

    2. Where has the affix श्यन् been used in the verses?
Answer: The affix श्यन् has been used in the form मन्ये – derived from the verbal root √मन् (मनँ ज्ञाने ४. ७३).

Please see answer to question 1 in the following comment for derivation of the form
