Translation – You grant the wishes of those who take refuge in You. Therefore, when I proceed to create the universe, which will be nothing but an exhibition of Your own creative power, be pleased to fill my mind with (the thought of) each and every exploit You may perform in course of the descents You take along with Your own divine Energy, Goddess Ramā, manifesting many a divine virtue, so that I may remain untainted by the impurities (in the shape of egotism etc.) attaching to the work of creation (23). I am the deity presiding over the Mahat-tattva, which represents Your power of understanding, one of the innumerable powers possessed by You, and sprang from the pool of Your navel even while You, the Supreme Person, slept on these waters. Therefore, as I proceed to bring to light the wonderful creation, which will be Your own manifestation, let not my utterance of the words of the Veda fail (24).

रमया is तृतीया-एकवचनम् of the स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘रमा’।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। As per 2-3-19 सहयुक्तेऽप्रधाने – A third case affix (‘टा’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भिस्’) is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) co-occurring with सह or a synonym of सह, provided the प्रातिपदिकम् does not denote the primary (agent.)

See question 1.

By 7-3-105 आङि चापः – ‘आप्’ ending bases get the letter ‘ए’ as the substitute when followed by the affix ‘आङ्’ (‘टा’) or ‘ओस्’। Note: As per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य only the ending letter ‘आ’ of the base ‘रमा’ is replaced by ‘ए’।

By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

Questions:

1. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-3-19 सहयुक्तेऽप्रधाने the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – विनापि तद्योगं तृतीया। Please explain.

2. Which कृत् affix is used to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘रमा’? (Hint: The विग्रह-वाक्यम् is रमयतीति रमा।)

3. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the दीर्घादेश: (elongation) in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गृहीत’ (used as part of the compound गृहीतगुणावतारः)?

4. What prevents the सूत्रम् 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः from applying in the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विक्रम’ (used as part of the compound स्वविक्रमम्)?

5. In how many places in the verses has the substitution ‘शतृँ’ (in place of ‘लँट्’) been used?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“For how many years have you lived here with your family?”

Easy questions:

1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the augment इट् in करिष्यति?

2. Can you spot the augment सीयुट् in the verses?

  1. 1. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-3-19 सहयुक्तेऽप्रधाने the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – विनापि तद्योगं तृतीया। Please explain.
Answer: A third case affix (prescribed by the सूत्रम् 2-3-19 सहयुक्तेऽप्रधाने) may be used even without explicit connection with सह। How do we know this? Because पाणिनि: has himself has done so in rules such as 1-2-65 वृद्धो यूना तल्लक्षणश्चेदेव विशेषः (where a third case affix has been used in the word यूना even though the word सह is only implied and not explicitly mentioned.)

    2. Which कृत् affix is used to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘रमा’? (Hint: The विग्रह-वाक्यम् is रमयतीति रमा।)
Answer: The कृत् affix ‘अच्’ is used to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘रमा’।

Goddess Lakṣmī (one who delights.)

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘रमा’ is derived from the causative form of the verbal root √रम् (रमुँ क्रीडायाम् | रमँ इति माधवः १. ९८९) as follows –
By 3-1-26 हेतुमति च।
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।
By 6-4-92 मितां ह्रस्वः।
९८९) is considered to be a मित् (having the letter ‘म्’ as a इत्) as per the गणसूत्रम् – जनीजॄष्क्नसुरञ्जोऽमन्ताश्च – The verbal roots √जन् (जनीँ प्रादुर्भावे ४. ११५४) as well as any verbal root ending in ‘अम्’ are considered to be ‘मित्’।

By वार्तिकम् (under 3-1-134 नन्दिग्रहिपचादिभ्यो ल्युणिन्यचः) – अज्विधिः सर्वधातुभ्यः – The affix ‘अच्’ may be used after any verbal root (to denote the agent/doer of the action.)
Note: The affix ‘अ’ gets आर्धधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।
Note: Since the affix ‘अ’ does not begin with a letter belonging to the प्रत्याहार: ‘वल्’, it cannot take the augment ‘इट्’ prescribed the सूत्रम् 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः। This allows 6-4-51 to apply in the next step.
By 6-4-51 णेरनिटि।

Now we form the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘रमा’ by adding the affix टाप्।
By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।

    3. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the दीर्घादेश: (elongation) in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गृहीत’ (used as part of the compound गृहीतगुणावतारः)?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-2-37 ग्रहोऽलिटि दीर्घः is used for the दीर्घादेशः (elongation) in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गृहीत’।

Please see the following post for the derivation of the

    4. From which verbal root is the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रपन्न’ (used as part of the compound प्रपन्नवरदः in the verses) derived?
Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रपन्न’ is derived from the verbal root √पद् (पदँ गतौ ४. ६५) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘प्र’। Derivation is as follows –
By 3-2-102 निष्ठा। Note: The affix ‘क्त’ has been used कर्तरि here as per 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च।
Note: Here 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prevents the affix ‘त’ from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 8-2-42 रदाभ्यां निष्ठातो नः पूर्वस्य च दः – The letter ‘न्’ is the replacement in place of the letter ‘त्’ of a निष्ठा affix (ref. 1-1-26) which immediately follows a रेफ: (the letter ‘र्’) or the letter ‘द्’ and also in place of the letter ‘द्’ which immediately precedes a निष्ठा affix.
    Thus there are two cases:
    (i) The letter ‘त्’ of a निष्ठा affix is immediately following a रेफ:। In this case the letter ‘त्’ is replaced by the letter ‘न्’।
(ii) The letter ‘त्’ of a निष्ठा affix is immediately following the letter ‘द्’। In this case the letter ‘त्’ (of the निष्ठा affix) as well as the letter ‘द्’ (of the धातु:) is replaced by the letter ‘न्’।

    5. In which word in the verses has the सूत्रम् 7-3-52 चजोः कु घिण्ण्यतोः been used?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-3-52 चजोः कु घिण्ण्यतोः has been used in the word विसर्गः (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विसर्ग’, प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √सृज् (सृजँ विसर्गे ६. १५०) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘वि’।

By 3-3-18 भावे – The affix घञ् may be used following a verbal root to denote the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state.
By 7-3-52 चजोः कु घिण्ण्यतोः – The letter ‘च्’ or the letter ‘ज्’ is replaced by a letter of the क-वर्गः when followed by either –
    i) an affix which has the letter ‘घ्’ as a इत् or
    ii) the affix ण्यत्।
    ‘विसर्ग’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।
Note: घञबन्त: (लिङ्गानुशासनम् २.२) – A प्रातिपदिकम् ending in the affix ‘घञ्’ or ‘अप्’ is used in the masculine gender. It is declined like राम-शब्दः।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“For how many years have you lived here with your family?”

    Note: न्यवात्सीः is derived from the verbal root √वस् (वसँ निवासे १. ११६०) as follows –
By 3-2-110 लुङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च।
By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि। Note: This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.
By 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्।
Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the ‘इट्’ augment (for the affix ‘स्’) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 7-2-3 वदव्रजहलन्तस्याचः ।
By 7-4-49 सः स्यार्द्धधातुके – The letter ‘स्’ gets replaced by the letter ‘त्’ when followed by a आर्धधातुकम् affix which begins with the letter ‘स्’। Note: The affix सिँच् does have the designation आर्धधातुकम् by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः। This allows 7-4-49 to apply here.

By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।
