अधिज्यताम् fAs

Today we will look at the form अधिज्यताम् fAs from रघुवंशम् verse 11-14.

तौ सुकेतुसुतया खिलीकृते कौशिकाद्विदितशापया पथि ।

Translation – And on the way laid waste by Suketu’s daughter, of whose curse Kauśika had spoken to them, they playfully strung their bows, having rested their bow-ends on the grounds (14).

Note: ‘strung’ is the translation for अधिज्यतां निन्यतुः।

Note: The above verse has been discussed in detail in the Thursday class on April 8th 2010. Please refer to the following link for the class recording – Video

Here निन्यतुः (derived from the verbal root √नी (णीञ् प्रापणे १. १०४९)) has taken two objects धनुषी (नुपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘धनुस्’, द्वितीया-द्विवचनम्) and अधिज्यताम् (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अधिज्यता’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।

अधिज्यताम् is the secondary object (गौण-कर्म) of निन्यतुः। The primary object (प्रधान-कर्म/मुख्य-कर्म) being धनुषी।

‘अधिज्यता’ gets the कर्म-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-51 अकथितं च – A कारकम् (participant in the action) which has no other specific designation like अपादानम् (ablation) etc gets the designation कर्म (object.)

Note:
दुह्‍याच्‍पच्‍दण्‍ड्रुधिप्रच्‍छिचिब्रूशासुजिमथ्‍मुषाम् ।

दुहादीनां द्वादशानां तथा नीप्रभृतीनां चतुर्णां कर्मणा यद्युज्यते तदेवाकथितं कर्मेति परिगणनं कर्तव्यमित्यर्थ:।
A कारकम् (participant in the action) which connects with the primary object of any one of only the following 12 + 4 = 16 verbal roots (and their synonyms) gets the designation कर्म as long as no other specific designation like अपादानम् etc has been assigned to it –

and

(xiii) √नी (णीञ् प्रापणे १. १०४९)
(xiv) √हृ (हृञ् हरणे १. १०४६)
(xv) √कृष् (कृषँ विलेखने १. ११४५)
(xvi) √वह् (वहँ प्रापणे १. ११५९)

Note: The above 12 + 4 = 16 verbal roots (and their synonyms) are called द्विकर्मका: because they are capable of taking two objects – a primary object (प्रधान-कर्म/मुख्य-कर्म) and a secondary object (गौण-कर्म)। The प्रधान-कर्म/मुख्य-कर्म gets the कर्म-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-49 कर्तुरीप्सिततमं कर्म and the गौण-कर्म gets the कर्म-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-51 अकथितं च।

(1) अधिज्यता + अम् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। Since ‘अधिज्यता’ has the कर्म-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-51 अकथितं च, it takes a second case affix by 2-3-2 कर्मणि द्वितीया – A second case affix (‘अम्’, ‘औट्’, ‘शस्’) is used to denote कर्म (object of the action) provided it has not been expressed otherwise.
Note: 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of ‘अम्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

(2) अधिज्यताम् । By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्व: – In place of a preceding ‘अक्’ letter and the following vowel (‘अच्’) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

Questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 1-4-51 अकथितं च been used for the first time in the गीता?

2. If the सूत्रम् 1-4-51 अकथितं च were not to be used (to assign the designation कर्म to ‘अधिज्यता’) which designation would ‘अधिज्यता’ take?
i) करणम्
ii) सम्प्रदानम्
iii) अपादानम्
iv) अधिकरणम्

3. Please give the passive form of the sentence – तौ धनुषी अधिज्यतां निन्यतुः।

4. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 1-4-51 अकथितं च, the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – अर्थनिबन्धनेयं सञ्ज्ञा। बलिं भिक्षते वसुधाम्। माणवकं धर्मं भाषते अभिधत्ते वक्तीद्यादि। Please explain.

5. Commenting further on the same सूत्रम्, the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – कारकं किम्? माणवकस्य पितरं पन्थानं पृच्छति। Please explain.

6. How would you say this Sanskrit?
“Rāvaṇa took Sītā to Laṅkā.”

Easy questions:

1. Why doesn’t 6-1-77 इको यणचि apply between धनुषी + अधिज्यताम्?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-88 भस्य टेर्लोपः been used in the verses?

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 1-4-51 अकथितं च been used for the first time in the गीता?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 1-4-51 अकथितं च has been used for the first time in the गीता in the form हृषीकेशम्
    हृषीकेशं तदा वाक्यमिदमाह महीपते |
    अर्जुन उवाच |
    सेनयोरुभयोर्मध्ये रथं स्थापय मेऽच्युत || 1-21||
    Here आह (derived from the verbal root √ब्रू (ब्रूञ् व्यक्तायां वाचि २. ३९)) has taken two objects हृषीकेशम् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘हृषीकेश’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) and वाक्यम् (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वाक्य’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।

हृषीकेशम् is the secondary object (गौण-कर्म) of आह। The primary object (प्रधान-कर्म/मुख्य-कर्म) being वाक्यम्।

    2. If the सूत्रम् 1-4-51 अकथितं च were not to be used (to assign the designation कर्म to ‘अधिज्यता’) which designation would ‘अधिज्यता’ take?
    i) करणम्
    ii) सम्प्रदानम्
    iii) अपादानम्
    iv) अधिकरणम्
Answer: iv) अधिकरणम्। The form would be अधिज्यतायाम्।

    3. Please give the passive form of the sentence – तौ धनुषी अधिज्यतां निन्यतुः।
    Answer: ताभ्यां धनुषी अधिज्यतां निन्याते।

    4. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 1-4-51 अकथितं च, the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – अर्थनिबन्धनेयं सञ्ज्ञा। बलिं भिक्षते वसुधाम्। माणवकं धर्मं भाषते अभिधत्ते वक्तीद्यादि। Please explain.
Answer: The designation कर्म (assigned by the सूत्रम् 1-4-51 अकथितं च) is conditioned on the meaning (of the verbal root) and not on the specific sixteen verbal roots √दुह् etc listed in दुह्‍याच्‍पच्‍दण्‍ड्रुधिप्रच्‍छिचिब्रूशासुजिमथ्‍मुषाम् । कर्मयुक् स्‍यादकथितं तथा स्‍यान्नीहृकृष्‍वहाम् ।।
Hence even in the example बलिं भिक्षते वसुधाम् the term ‘बलि’ gets the designation कर्म because even though the verbal root √भिक्ष् is not in the list √दुह् etc it is a synonym of the verbal root √याच् which is listed. Similarly in the example माणवकं धर्मं भाषते/अभिधत्ते/वक्ति the term ‘माणवक’ gets the designation कर्म because even though the verbal roots √भाष्, अभि + √धा and √वच् are not in the list √दुह् etc they are synonyms of the verbal root √ब्रू which is listed.

    5. Commenting further on the same सूत्रम्, the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – कारकं किम्? माणवकस्य पितरं पन्थानं पृच्छति। Please explain.
Answer: The सूत्रम् सूत्रम् 1-4-51 अकथितं च is in the अधिकार: of 1-4-23 कारके (which runs down to 1-4-55.) Hence the वृत्ति: of the the सूत्रम् 1-4-51 says – अपादानादिविशेषैरविविक्षतं कारकं कर्मसंज्ञं स्‍यात् । In order to understand the importance of using the word कारकम् in the वृत्तिः, consider the following example – माणवकस्य पितरं पन्थानं पृच्छति। The verbal root √प्रच्छ् is in the list √दुह् etc and furthermore ‘माणवक’ has no other specific designation like अपादानम् (ablation) etc. But ‘माणवक’ is not a कारकम् – participant in the action (of asking.) Thus ‘माणवक’ does not get the designation कर्म। If the वृत्तिः has not specified the word कारकम् then in this example ‘माणवक’ would have been assigned the designation कर्म which would have been undesirable.

    6. How would you say this Sanskrit?
    “Rāvaṇa took Sītā to Laṅkā.”
    Answer: रावणः लङ्काम् सीताम् निनाय = रावणो लङ्कां सीतां निनाय ।

    Easy questions:

    1. Why doesn’t 6-1-77 इको यणचि apply between धनुषी + अधिज्यताम्?
Answer: The dual case ending (‘ई’) in the form धनुषी has the designation प्रगृह्यम् as per the सूत्रम् 1-1-11 ईदूदेद् द्विवचनं प्रगृह्यम् – A dual number affix ending in the letter ‘’, ‘ऊ’ or ‘ए’ gets the designation ‘प्रगृह्य’।
Therefore there is no सन्धिः operation between धनुषी and अधिज्यताम् as per the सूत्रम् 6-1-125 प्लुतप्रगृह्या अचि नित्यम् – (We will ignore the term ‘प्लुत’ because it seldom has application in classical Sanskrit.) Terms which are designated as ‘प्रगृह्य’ retain their natural state when followed by a vowel. (This means that no सन्धिः operations are performed.)

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-88 भस्य टेर्लोपः been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-88 भस्य टेर्लोपः has been used for the टि-लोप: in the form पथि (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पथिन्’, सप्तमी-एकवचनम्।)
