एकराट् mNs

Today we will look at the form एकराट् mNs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 7.4.12.

Translation – In that palace of the great Indra reveled the mighty and proud Hiraṇyakaśipu, who had conquered (all) the worlds and was (now) their sole monarch, (nay,) whose feet were respectfully tended by gods and others severely oppressed by him and who ruled with a strong and iron hand (12). Upon him, O dear one – who remained inebriate with a strong-smelling wine and whose coppery eyes ever kept rolling (through intoxication), (nay,) who was a reservoir of austerity, Yoga (concentration of mind) and strength of body and acuteness of the senses – waited with presents (of various kinds) in their hands all the protectors of the worlds barring (of course) three (viz., Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva) (13).

Note: Due to the restriction imposed by the सूत्रम् 2-1-50 दिक्संख्ये संज्ञायाम्‌ we would be able to construct the compound एकराट् only if it were to be a proper name. But the specific mention of ‘एक’ in the सूत्रम् 2-1-49 पूर्वकालैकसर्वजरत्पुराणनवकेवलाः समानाधिकरणेन now allows us to construct this compound even though it is not a proper name.

By 2-1-49 पूर्वकालैकसर्वजरत्पुराणनवकेवलाः समानाधिकरणेन – A सुबन्तं (ending in a सुँप् affix) पदम् which either i) denotes an action which naturally precedes in time or ii) is (composed by adding a सुँप् affix to) ‘एक’/’सर्व’/’जरत्’/’पुराण’/’नव’/’केवल’ optionally compounds with another सुबन्तं (ending in a सुँप् affix) पदम् – provided both the सुबन्त-पदे refer to the same item – and the resulting compound is a तत्पुरुष:।

(3) By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – the term ‘एक सुँ’ gets the designation उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-1-49 (which prescribes the compounding) the term पूर्वकालैकसर्वजरत्पुराणनवकेवलाः ends in the nominative case. Hence the term ‘एक सुँ’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ should be placed in the prior position.

Note: ‘एक सुँ + राज् सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.

By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

Note: As per the सूत्रम् 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः, the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘एकराज्’ is masculine since the latter member ‘राज्’ of the compound is masculine.

The विवक्षा is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

By 6-1-68 हल्ङ्याब्भ्यो दीर्घात्‌ सुतिस्यपृक्तं हल् – A single letter affix ‘सुँ’, ‘ति’ or ‘सि’ is dropped following a base ending in a consonant or in the long feminine affix ‘ङी’ or ‘आप्’। Now ‘एकराज्’ gets the designation पदम् by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्। This allows the सूत्रम् 8-2-36 to apply in the next step.

By 8-2-36 व्रश्चभ्रस्जसृजमृजयजराजभ्राजच्छशां षः – The seven verbal roots listed – √व्रश्च् (ओँव्रश्चूँ छेदने ६. ९५७) – and terms ending in the letter ‘छ्’ or the letter ‘श्’ get the letter ‘ष्’ as a replacement, when they are at the end of a पदम् or are followed by a झल् letter.
Note: As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य only the ending letter is replaced by the letter ‘ष्’।

By 8-2-39 झलां जशोऽन्ते, a झल् letter occurring at the end of a पदम् it is replaced by a जश् letter.

By 8-4-56 वाऽवसाने, a झल् letter is optionally replaced by a चर् letter when nothing follows.

  1. 1. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-1-49 पूर्वकालैकसर्वजरत्पुराणनवकेवलाः समानाधिकरणेन (used in step 2) the काशिका says – समानाधिकरणेनेति किम्? Please explain.
Answer: Why does the सूत्रम् 2-1-49 पूर्वकालैकसर्वजरत्पुराणनवकेवलाः समानाधिकरणेन specify the condition समानाधिकरणेन (provided both the terms of the compound refer to the same item)? Consider the example एकस्याः शाटी – one woman’s garment. In this example ‘एक’ and ‘शाटी’ are not referring to the same item/person. Hence, the सूत्रम् 2-1-49 cannot facilitate compounding here.
    Note: अत्र भवितव्यमेव षष्ठीसमासेन – but we can certainly form a षष्ठीतत्पुरुषः compound एकशाटी here (using the सूत्रम् 2-2-8 षष्ठी।)

    2. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of a third case affix in the word त्रिभि: used in the verses?
    Answer: A third case affix in the word त्रिभि: – which is co-occurring with विना – is justified by the सूत्रम् 2-3-32 पृथग्विनानानाभिस्तृतीयान्यतरस्याम्‌ – A third case affix (‘टा’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भिस्’) or a fifth case affix (‘ङसिँ’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भ्यस्’) or a second case affix (‘अम्’, ‘औट्’, ‘शस्’) is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) co-occurring with पृथक्, विना or नाना।

    3. In which word in the verses has the सूत्रम् 6-4-52 निष्ठायां सेटि been used?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-52 निष्ठायां सेटि has been used in the form प्रतापितैः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रतापित’, पुंलिङ्गे तृतीया-बहुवचनम्) – derived from the causative form of the verbal root √तप् (तपँ सन्तापे १.

By 3-1-26 हेतुमति च।
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।

By 6-4-52 निष्ठायां सेटि – The affix ‘णि’ is elided when followed by a निष्ठा affix (ref. 1-1-26) which has taken the augment ‘इट्’।

    ‘तापित’ is compounded with the उपसर्गः ‘प्र’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।

    4. Why doesn’t the सूत्रम् 8-2-42 रदाभ्यां निष्ठातो नः पूर्वस्य च दः apply in the form मत्तम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘मत्त’, पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) used in the verses?
    Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘मत्त’ is derived from the verbal root √मद् (मदीँ हर्षे ४. १०५) by adding the निष्ठा affix ‘क्त’।
    The सूत्रम् 8-2-42 रदाभ्यां निष्ठातो नः पूर्वस्य च दः does not apply in the form ‘मत्त’ because of the निषेध-सूत्रम् 8-2-57 न ध्याख्यापॄमूर्च्छिमदाम् – When following the verbal root √ध्यै (ध्यै चिन्तायाम् १. १०५), the letter ‘त्’ of a निष्ठा affix (ref. 1-1-26) is not replaced by the letter ‘न्’।

Please refer to answer to question 2 in the following comment for derivation of the

    5. Can you spot a तृतीया-तत्पुरुष: compound in the commentary?
    Answer: The compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘उपायनयुक्त’ used in the form उपायनयुक्तैः (पुंलिङ्गे तृतीया-बहुवचनम्) is a तृतीया-तत्पुरुष:।

The लौकिक-विग्रहः is as follows –

By 2-1-32 कर्तृकरणे कृता बहुलम्‌ – A पदम् ending in a third case affix – denoting either the agent or the instrument of the action – variously compounds with (a syntactically related पदम् composed by adding a सुँप् affix to) a term ending in a कृत् affix (ref. 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्) and the resulting compound gets the designation तत्पुरुष:।
By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – the term ‘उपायन भिस्’ gets the designation उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-1-32 (which prescribes the compounding) the term तृतीया (which comes as अनुवृत्ति: from 2-1-30 तृतीया तत्कृतार्थेन गुणवचनेन) ends in the nominative case. Hence ‘उपायन भिस्’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌।
    Note: ‘उपायन भिस् + युक्त सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.
By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।
As per the सूत्रम् 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः, the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘उपायनयुक्त’ is masculine since the latter member ‘युक्त’ (which is an adjective) is used in the masculine here. The entire compound उपायनयुक्तैः is qualifying the masculine noun पाणिभि:।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“In Laṅkā, Vibhīṣaṇa was the sole devotee of Śrī Rāma.” Construct a compound for ‘sole devotee’ (एकश्चासौ भक्त:।)

    Easy questions:
    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि has been used in the form रेमे – derived from the verbal root √रम् (रमुँ क्रीडायाम् ।

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
Note: As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल् शित् सर्वस्य the substitution ‘एश्’ replaces the entire term ‘त’।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 6-4-120 अत एकहल्मध्येऽनादेशादेर्लिटि, the letter ‘अ’ of a अङ्गम् takes the letter ‘ए’ as the substitute and simultaneously there is लोप: (elision) of the अभ्यास:, when all the following conditions are satisfied:
    (i) the letter ‘अ’ is preceded and followed by a single (non-conjunct) consonant
(ii) the अङ्गम् is followed by a लिँट् affix which is कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्।)
(iii) in place of the first letter of the अङ्गम् there is no आदेश: (substitution) that is based on the लिँट् affix.
Note : By 1-2-5 असंयोगाल्लिट् कित्, a लिँट् affix which is not a पित् – does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत् – is considered to be a कित् (as having the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्), as long as there is no संयोग: (conjunction consonant) prior to the affix. Hence ‘एश्’ is a कित् affix here. This allows 6-4-120 to apply.

    2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘अत्’ in the form उपासत used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-5 आत्मनेपदेष्वनतः prescribes the substitution ‘अत्’ in the form उपासत – derived from the verbal root √आस् (आसँ उपवेशने २.

By 3-2-111अनद्यतने लङ्।
‘झ’ gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्। This allows 3-1-68 to apply below.
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।
By 7-1-5 आत्मनेपदेष्वनतः – The letter ‘झ्’ of a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययः gets ‘अत्’ as the replacement when following an अङ्गम् that does not end in letter ‘अ’।
Note: Since ‘अत्’ is an आदेश: (substitute) in place of the letter ‘झ्’ of the affix ‘झ’ (which has the विभक्ति-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-104 विभक्तिश्च), ‘अत्’ also gets the विभक्ति-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ। Hence 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘त्’ of ‘अत्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-1-90 आटश्च।
