अपात्रेभ्यः mDp

Today we will look at the form अपात्रेभ्यः mDp from श्रीमद्भागवद्गीता 17.22.

Gita Press translation – A gift which is made without good grace and in a disdainful spirit, out of time and place, and to undeserving persons, is said to be Tāmasika. (22)

अपात्रेभ्यः is पुंलिङ्गे चतुर्थी-बहुवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अपात्र’।

‘अपात्र’ (‘undeserving person’) gets the designation सम्‍प्रदानम् (recipient) by the सूत्रम् 1-4-32 कर्मणा यमभिप्रैति स सम्प्रदानम् – That कारकम् (participant in the action) whom the doer wishes to connect/endow with the object of an action is called सम्‍प्रदानम् (recipient.)
*Note: As per the वृत्ति:, in order for this सूत्रम् to apply the action has to be that of giving. But according to the महाभाष्यम् we may apply this सूत्रम् even when the action is other than that of giving.

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। As per 2-3-13 चतुर्थी सम्प्रदाने – A fourth case affix (‘ङे’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भ्यस्’) is used to denote the सम्‍प्रदानम् (recipient) provided it has not been expressed otherwise.

Note: 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of the affix ‘भ्यस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 7-3-103 बहुवचने झल्येत् – the ending letter ‘अ’ of a अङ्गम् changes to ‘ए’ when followed by a plural सुँप् affix beginning with a झल् letter.

  1. 1. Where has the combination of rules 1-4-32 कर्मणा यमभिप्रैति स सम्प्रदानम् and 2-3-13 चतुर्थी सम्प्रदाने been used in the first ten verses of Chapter Eleven of the गीता?
Answer: The combination of rules 1-4-32 कर्मणा यमभिप्रैति स सम्प्रदानम् and 2-3-13 चतुर्थी सम्प्रदाने have been used in the first ten verses of Chapter Eleven of the गीता in the form ते (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘युषमद्’, चतुर्थी-एकवचनम्)। Note: ते is used here as an alternate form for तुभ्यम् as per the सूत्रम् 8-1-22 तेमयावेकवचनस्य।

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 1-4-32 कर्मणा यमभिप्रैति स सम्प्रदानम् the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – दानं चापुनर्ग्रहणाय स्वस्वत्वनिवृत्तिपूर्वकं परस्वत्वोत्पादनम्। Please explain.
Answer: The वृत्ति: of the सूत्रम् 1-4-32 कर्मणा यमभिप्रैति स सम्प्रदानम् in the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी reads – दानस्‍य कर्मणा यमभिप्रैति स सम्‍प्रदानसञ्ज्ञः स्‍यात्। The तत्त्वबोधिनी clarifies that here the term ‘दान’ applies only when the intention of the giver is to permanently transfer the ownership of something to the recipient with no intention of taking it back. Hence in the example रजकस्य वस्त्रं ददाति (someone gives a garment to a washer-man) the term ‘दान’ (and hence the सूत्रम् 1-4-32 कर्मणा यमभिप्रैति स सम्प्रदानम्) does not apply because the intention is to take back the (washed) garment. ‘रजक’ does not get the सम्प्रदान-सञ्ज्ञा and hence does not take a fourth case affix.

    3. Commenting further on the same सूत्रम् the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – भाष्यमते तु नान्वर्थतायामाग्रहः ‘खण्डिकोपाध्यायः शिष्याय चपेटां ददाति’ इत्यादिप्रयोगात्। Please explain.
Answer: But in the opinion of the महाभाष्यम् there is no strict requirement that the designation सम्प्रदानम् be only in accordance with its etymological meaning which is charity – permanent transfer of ownership of something. How do we know this? From examples like the following (which occur in the महाभाष्यम्) – खण्डिकोपाध्यायः शिष्याय चपेटां ददाति = An angry teacher gives a slap to the student. Because there is no transfer of ownership of anything here there is no question of any charity but still ‘शिष्य’ gets the designation सम्प्रदानम् and hence takes a fourth case affix (as per 2-3-13 चतुर्थी सम्प्रदाने)।

    4. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The teacher gave us the answer to this question.”

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Śrī Rāma gave his (own) (two) sandals to Bharata.”

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
    “Give me some water.”

    Easy questions:

    1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘ई’ in the form दीयते?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-66 घुमास्थागापाजहातिसां हलि prescribes the substitution ‘ई’ in the form दीयते – derived from the verbal root √दा (डुदाञ् दाने ३. १०).

Please see answer to question 1 in the following comment for the derivation – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/04/26/अदात्-3as-लुँङ्/#comment-3674

    2. In the verses can you spot two words in which the सूत्रम् 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्‌ has been used?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्‌ has been used in the forms यत् (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘यद्’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) and तत् (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘तद्’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
By 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्‌ – The affixes ‘सुँ’ and ‘अम्’ that follow a neuter अङ्गम् take the लुक् elision. Now ‘यद्’ gets the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।
By 8-4-56 वावसाने।

    Similar derivation for तत्।
