सूर्यात् m-Ab-s

Today we will look at the form सूर्यात् m-Ab-s from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 4.31.15.

Gita Press translation – Even as the stem, boughs and side-branches of a tree are nourished by watering its roots and just as all the Indriyas (the senses of perception as well as the organs of action) are nourished by sustaining life through food, so by offering worship to the immortal Lord all are worshipped (14). Even as water (in the form of rain-drops) emanates from (the rays of) the sun during the rainy season and returns to the same source in the dry season and just as (the physical bodies of all) mobile and immobile creatures evolve from the earth and return to the earth, so does this animate and inanimate creation (which is product of Matter) proceeds from Śrī Hari and returns to Him (15).

सूर्यात् is पञ्चमी-एकवचनम् of the पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सूर्य’।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। As per the 1-4-31 भुवः प्रभवः – The कारकम् (participant in the action) which denotes the place of first appearance of the agent of (the action of) being is designated as अपादानम्।
By 2-3-28 अपादाने पञ्चमी – A fifth case affix (‘ङसिँ’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भ्यस्’) is used to denote the अपादानम् (that from which detachment/ablation takes place) provided it has not been expressed otherwise.

By 7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः – Following a अङ्गम् ending in the letter ‘अ’, the affixes ‘टा’, ‘ङसिँ’ and ‘ङस्’ are replaced respectively by ‘इन’, ‘आत्’ and ‘स्य’। Note: Since the substitute ‘आत्’ has more than one letter, as per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य, the entire affix (and not just its last letter) is replaced by ‘आत्’।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘त्’ of ‘आत्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 1-4-31 भुवः प्रभवः been used in the last fifteen verses of Chapter Eight of the गीता?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 1-4-31 भुवः प्रभवः has been used in the last fifteen verses of Chapter Eight of the गीता in the form अव्यक्ताद्‌ (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अव्यक्त’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे पञ्चमी-एकवचनम्)।

    2. The term भुवः used in the सूत्रम् 1-4-31 भुवः प्रभवः is षष्ठी-एकवचनम् of the स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘भू’। Commenting on this the Please explain.
Answer: (When the स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘भू’ is used in the well-known meaning of ‘earth’, it is derived in the sense of कर्तरि by using the affix क्विँप् prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-2-178 अन्येभ्योऽपि दृश्यते।) The तत्त्वबोधिनी clarifies that the स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘भू’ as used in the सूत्रम् 1-4-31 भुवः प्रभवः is derived in the sense of भावे using the वार्तिकम् (under 3-3-94 स्त्रियां क्तिन्) सम्पदादिभ्‍यः क्विप्। (क्तिन्नपीष्‍यते) as follows –

By the वार्तिकम् (under 3-3-94 स्त्रियां क्तिन्) सम्पदादिभ्‍यः क्विप् (क्तिन्नपीष्‍यते) – The affix क्विँप् (as well as क्तिन्) maybe used following the verbal root सम्पद् (√पद् (पदँ गतौ ४. ६५) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘सम्’) etc to denote in the feminine gender either (i) the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state or (ii) any कारक: except the agent of the action, provided the word so derived is a proper name.
Note: ‘भू’ is considered to belong to the सम्पदादि-गण:।
By 6-1-67 वेरपृक्तस्य। ‘भू’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

The विवक्षा in the form भुवः (used in the सूत्रम् 1-4-31) is षष्ठी-एकवचनम्।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘ङस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 6-4-77 अचि श्नुधातुभ्रुवां य्वोरियङुवङौ – If an affix beginning with an अच् (vowel) follows, then the (ending letter of the) अङ्गम् is replaced by इयँङ्/उवँङ् in the following three cases – (1) If the अङ्गम् ends in the affix ‘श्नु’ or (2) If the अङ्गम् ends in the इवर्ण: or उवर्ण: of a धातु: or (3) If the अङ्गम् is the word ‘भ्रू’ । (As per 1-1-53 ङिच्च only the ending letter ‘ऊ’ of the अङ्गम् is substituted.)

    3. Commenting further on the सूत्रम् 1-4-31 भुवः प्रभवः the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – पूर्वसूत्रे समासनिर्दिष्टमपि कर्तृग्रहणमनुवर्तते स्वरितत्वात्। Please explain.
Answer: The term ‘कर्तृ’ comes as अनुवृत्तिः into the सूत्रम् 1-4-31 भुवः प्रभवः from the prior सूत्रम् 1-4-30 जनिकर्तुः in spite of ‘कर्तृ’ being a part of the compound जनिकर्तुः (षष्ठी-एकवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘जनिकर्तृ’)। The justification for doing this is the fact that ‘कर्तृ’ is marked with a स्वरित: accent (ref. 1-3-11 स्वरितेनाधिकारः) in the compound ‘जनिकर्तृ’।

    4. Which कृत् affix is used to derive the स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इज्या’ (used in the compound अच्युतेज्या in the verses)?
    Answer: The कृत् affix क्यप्‌ is used to derive the स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इज्या’ – derived from the verbal root √यज् (यजँ देवपूजासङ्गतिकरणदानेषु १.
Please see the following post for derivation of the

    5. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of a second case affix in the form मूलसेकम् used in the commentary?
    Answer: The use of a second case affix in the form मूलसेकम् (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘मूलसेक’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) is justified by the सूत्रम् 2-3-32 पृथग्विनानानाभिस्तृतीयान्यतरस्याम्‌ – A third case affix (‘टा’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भिस्’) or a fifth case affix (‘ङसिँ’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भ्यस्’) or a second case affix (‘अम्’, ‘औट्’, ‘शस्’) is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) co-occurring with पृथक्, विना or नाना।
    In the commentary the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘मूलसेक’ co-occurs with विना।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The Gaṅgā emanates (first appears) from the Himālaya.”

    Easy questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन् been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन् been used in the form तृप्यन्ति – derived from the verbal root तृप् (तृपँ प्रीणने ४.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन् – The affix ‘श्यन्’ is placed after the verbal roots belonging to the दिवादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुकम् affix that is used signifying the agent. Note: Since the सार्वधातुकम् affix ‘श्यन्’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्) by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। This allows 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to prevent 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च from applying.
By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।

    2. Can you spot the affix ‘श’ in the verses?
Answer: The affix ‘श’ occurs in the form प्रविशन्ति – derived from the verbal root √विश् (विशँ प्रवेशने ६.
Please see answer to question 1 in the following comment for derivation of the form
