Gita Press translation – Nārada prayed: Hail to the celebrated Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa of stainless glory (in You,) who assumes charming forms for putting an end to the (repeated) birth of all created beings (48). Bowing low in this way to the Sage Nārāyaṇa (the most ancient seer) as well as to His high-souled disciples, Nārada proceeded from that place to the hermitage of my father, the sage Dwaipāyana, (who was) directly present there (at that time) (47).

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-3-16 नमःस्वस्तिस्वाहास्वधालंवषड्योगाच्च been used for the first time in Chapter Eleven of the गीता?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-3-16 नमःस्वस्तिस्वाहास्वधालंवषड्योगाच्च has been used for the first time in Chapter Eleven of the गीता in the following verse:

    ते/तुभ्यम् is चतुर्थी-एकवचनम् of the सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘युष्मद्’।

    2. What is the alternate form for आनम्य?
    Answer: The optional final form for आनम्य is आनत्य – derived from the verbal root √नम् (णमँ प्रह्वत्वे शब्दे च १. ११३६) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘आङ्’।

By 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले। Note: Here the common agent of the actions आनम्य (bowing) and अगात् (proceeded) is नारदः। The earlier of the two actions is the action of bowing which is denoted by ‘नम्’ and hence takes the affix ‘क्त्वा’।
‘नम् + क्त्वा’ is compounded with ‘आङ्’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
Note: As per 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ, the substitution ‘ल्यप्’ (in place of the affix ‘क्त्वा’) inherits the property of being a कित् (having the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) affix with the designation of कृत् (by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्) and आर्धधातुकम् (by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।)
    = आ न + य । As per 6-4-38 वा ल्यपि – When followed by the affix ल्यप्, there is an optional elision of the final nasal consonant of the verbal roots* which have अनुदात्त-स्वरः in the धातु-पाठः as well as the verbal root √वन् (वनँ शब्दे १. ९१५) and the verbal roots belonging to the तनादि-गणः।
The following six roots end in a nasal consonant and have a अनुदात्त-स्वरः in the धातु-पाठः।
The elision (prescribed by 6-4-38) is optional in the case of the verbal roots which end in the letter ‘म्’ and have अनुदात्त-स्वरः in the धातु-पाठः। In the remaining cases the elision is invariable (not optional.)
    ‘आनत्य’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः (with the help of 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ।)

    3. Can you spot the affix क्यच् in the commentary?
Answer: The affix क्यच् occurs in the form नमस्यति – derived from the नाम-धातुः ‘नमस्य”।

By 3-3-115 ल्युट् च – (In addition to the affix ‘क्त’ prescribed by the prior सूत्रम् 3-3-114) the affix ल्युट् may also be used following a verbal root to denote in the neuter gender the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state.
By 7-1-1 युवोरनाकौ, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
    ‘धान’ is compounded with the उपसर्गौ ‘वि’ and ‘अव’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि। ‘व्यवधान’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Salutations to the Lord by whom this entire universe is pervaded.” Use the verbal root √तन् (तनुँ विस्तारे ८. १) for ‘to pervade.’
